jonathan’s place
beyond their past
a safe, loving home for
abused children

KID NET FOUNDATION
FISCAL YEAR 2013
ANNUAL REPORT
from the ceo
At Jonathan’s Place, we see children every day
who have suffered from abuse, abandonment,
and neglect. Thanks to our faithful donors and
supporters, these children can begin healing
and move beyond their past in a safe and loving
environment.
We are proud of the tremendous growth of our
Foster Care & Adoption program. We doubled
the amount of care days provided to our
children, licensed 16 additional foster families,
and, because of your continued support,
matched eight children with forever homes.
Our Residential Programs (Emergency Shelter
& Girls Treatment) continued to provide a soft
bed, warm meals, and a team of experienced
counselors and case managers for each child
that enters our doors.
In addition to continued collaboration with
Child Protective Services and the area agencies
that help abused children, Jonathan’s Place
established a partnership with National Safe
Place. We are now the Dallas County agency
to educate teens about the dangers of running
away and provide them with resources they can
use before making any decisions.
We are able to accomplish these things and
continue in our mission to provide a safe, loving
home for abused, abandoned and neglected
children because of your generous support.
Thank you!

Allicia Graham Frye
Chief Executive Officer
who we serve

Many of the children in our care
have never had a chance to learn
about art, much less create their own
masterpieces. Katie’s Corner (pictured
here) helps children reduce stress,
increase self-esteem, and develop an
appreciation for the visual arts.

With your support, Jonathan’s Place was able to produce incredible results in FY 2013.

child abuse in texas
Child abuse and neglect is a problem of epidemic proportion. Below are some startling statistics on the
scope of child abuse and neglect in Texas.
• Texas has the most fatalities from child abuse and neglect and ranks last in per capita spending
on child-abuse prevention, according to a study conducted by Texans Care for Children, a childadvocacy agency.
• Studies reveal that children who have been abused and neglected are 25% more likely to
experience problems such as delinquency, teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, drug use,
and mental health problems.
• As many as 80% of young adults who had been abused met the
diagnostic criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder at age
21 -- including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and suicide
attempts.
• 1/3 of abused and neglected children will eventually victimize
their own children.
DALLAS’ ONLY

emergency shelter

FOR CHILDREN AGE NEWBORN TO 17

In January 2013, six siblings (four boys and two girls) were removed from their home by Child Protective
Services. Their mother was addicted to drugs and their home was uninhabitable. The Emergency Shelter
at Jonathan’s Place was the only place they could call home and stay together.
Due to their size and age range, there were no foster homes available and splitting them up was not
an option.
Days turned to weeks. Weeks into months. In fact, these children stayed - together - at Jonathan’s Place for
six months until they were all placed with an aunt.
Your financial support helps provide a safe, loving home, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our staff and
volunteers spend each day - including holidays - with the children in our care and your donations help
ensure each child has warm meals, a soft bed and a caring adult to tuck them in every night.

foster care & adoption

The Foster Care & Adoption program recruits, trains and supports foster and adoptive families. With new
investments in additional staff in FY 2013, the program saw an exceptional increase in the number of
families that were verified. As a result, we were able to provide a loving foster home to 98 children, a 300%
increase within two years. We are also proud to find “forever homes” for children as they move beyond
their past. This includes families like the Cockburns (pictured above).
Meredith and Jason struggled with fertility issues, but when they thought about
their lives, and parenthood, they realized that what their family looked like wasn’t
important.
“There are children out there that just need a safe place to land. We have a safe
place – we can help,” Meredith said.
“We have adopted two amazing children (Vaden and Dominick) who make us better
people every day. We have a support system with Jonathan’s Place that is unrivaled
by other agencies.”
To the donors who support Jonathan’s Place, Meredith expresses her heartfelt
gratitude, “You have enriched and, frankly, saved the lives of children.”

national safe place
January 2013 marked the first year Jonathan’s Place became
the Dallas County partner with National Safe Place, a runaway
awareness and prevention program.
With support from local foundations and companies, like QuikTrip
and Southwest Airlines, Jonathan’s Place hit the ground running.

safe place results

If you operate a business or community organization in Dallas County that is interested in becoming a Safe
Place partner, please contact us at 214-870-9806.

answering the phone to save lives
As a National Safe Place partner, Jonathan’s Place staffs a 24-hour phone hotline. Our on-call staff
are available to receive calls from teens and Safe Place locations no matter the time of day. Your
donations help provide cards for each child we see with texting and hotline information. It’s simple
to use: Text HELP to 69866 with your city or zip code and you’ll immediately receive a response with
the closest Safe Place location. Youth also have the ability to call or text someone immediately to
talk through their situation.
girls residential treatment

Our girls residential treatment program experienced some incredible results in FY 2013. The
program is a home for up to eight girls ranging in age from 10 to 17. They have all been victims of
multiple abuses, such as sexual and/or phsyical abuse, exposure to illegal drugs, and neglect. In
short, they need intensive therapy that our team of experienced counselors can offer in a secure
environment that encourages their personal growth through engagement at school and outside
activities.
Our program encourages girls to participate in extracirricular activies, improve in their studies,
try new things, and experience a world beyond their past. For most of their lives, our girls were
told “no.” No to soccer, no to music, no to hugs, and no to a life without abuse. Because of your
support, we are able to say “Yes.”

Jonathan's Place FY 2013 Annual Report

  • 1. jonathan’s place beyond their past a safe, loving home for abused children KID NET FOUNDATION FISCAL YEAR 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
  • 2. from the ceo At Jonathan’s Place, we see children every day who have suffered from abuse, abandonment, and neglect. Thanks to our faithful donors and supporters, these children can begin healing and move beyond their past in a safe and loving environment. We are proud of the tremendous growth of our Foster Care & Adoption program. We doubled the amount of care days provided to our children, licensed 16 additional foster families, and, because of your continued support, matched eight children with forever homes. Our Residential Programs (Emergency Shelter & Girls Treatment) continued to provide a soft bed, warm meals, and a team of experienced counselors and case managers for each child that enters our doors. In addition to continued collaboration with Child Protective Services and the area agencies that help abused children, Jonathan’s Place established a partnership with National Safe Place. We are now the Dallas County agency to educate teens about the dangers of running away and provide them with resources they can use before making any decisions. We are able to accomplish these things and continue in our mission to provide a safe, loving home for abused, abandoned and neglected children because of your generous support. Thank you! Allicia Graham Frye Chief Executive Officer
  • 3. who we serve Many of the children in our care have never had a chance to learn about art, much less create their own masterpieces. Katie’s Corner (pictured here) helps children reduce stress, increase self-esteem, and develop an appreciation for the visual arts. • 4. child abuse in texas Child abuse and neglect is a problem of epidemic proportion. Below are some startling statistics on the scope of child abuse and neglect in Texas. • Texas has the most fatalities from child abuse and neglect and ranks last in per capita spending on child-abuse prevention, according to a study conducted by Texans Care for Children, a childadvocacy agency. • Studies reveal that children who have been abused and neglected are 25% more likely to experience problems such as delinquency, teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, drug use, and mental health problems. • As many as 80% of young adults who had been abused met the diagnostic criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder at age 21 -- including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and suicide attempts. • 1/3 of abused and neglected children will eventually victimize their own children.
  • 5. DALLAS’ ONLY emergency shelter FOR CHILDREN AGE NEWBORN TO 17 In January 2013, six siblings (four boys and two girls) were removed from their home by Child Protective Services. Their mother was addicted to drugs and their home was uninhabitable. The Emergency Shelter at Jonathan’s Place was the only place they could call home and stay together. Due to their size and age range, there were no foster homes available and splitting them up was not an option. Days turned to weeks. Weeks into months. In fact, these children stayed - together - at Jonathan’s Place for six months until they were all placed with an aunt. Your financial support helps provide a safe, loving home, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our staff and volunteers spend each day - including holidays - with the children in our care and your donations help ensure each child has warm meals, a soft bed and a caring adult to tuck them in every night. shelter stats AGE 0 to 5: 37% 6 to 12: 36% 13 to 18: 27% ETHNICITY African American - 31% Caucasian - 44% Hispanic - 24% All Other - 1%
  • 6. foster care & adoption The Foster Care & Adoption program recruits, trains and supports foster and adoptive families. With new investments in additional staff in FY 2013, the program saw an exceptional increase in the number of families that were verified. As a result, we were able to provide a loving foster home to 98 children, a 300% increase within two years. We are also proud to find “forever homes” for children as they move beyond their past. This includes families like the Cockburns (pictured above). Meredith and Jason struggled with fertility issues, but when they thought about their lives, and parenthood, they realized that what their family looked like wasn’t important. “There are children out there that just need a safe place to land. We have a safe place – we can help,” Meredith said. “We have adopted two amazing children (Vaden and Dominick) who make us better people every day. We have a support system with Jonathan’s Place that is unrivaled by other agencies.” To the donors who support Jonathan’s Place, Meredith expresses her heartfelt gratitude, “You have enriched and, frankly, saved the lives of children.” Watch a video of our superheroes at jpkids.org/annualreport.
  • 8. national safe place January 2013 marked the first year Jonathan’s Place became the Dallas County partner with National Safe Place, a runaway awareness and prevention program. With support from local foundations and companies, like QuikTrip and Southwest Airlines, Jonathan’s Place hit the ground running. safe place results If you operate a business or community organization in Dallas County that is interested in becoming a Safe Place partner, please contact us at 214-870-9806. answering the phone to save lives As a National Safe Place partner, Jonathan’s Place staffs a 24-hour phone hotline. Our on-call staff are available to receive calls from teens and Safe Place locations no matter the time of day. Your donations help provide cards for each child we see with texting and hotline information. It’s simple to use: Text HELP to 69866 with your city or zip code and you’ll immediately receive a response with the closest Safe Place location. Youth also have the ability to call or text someone immediately to talk through their situation.
  • 9. girls residential treatment Our girls residential treatment program experienced some incredible results in FY 2013. The program is a home for up to eight girls ranging in age from 10 to 17. They have all been victims of multiple abuses, such as sexual and/or phsyical abuse, exposure to illegal drugs, and neglect. In short, they need intensive therapy that our team of experienced counselors can offer in a secure environment that encourages their personal growth through engagement at school and outside activities. Our program encourages girls to participate in extracirricular activies, improve in their studies, try new things, and experience a world beyond their past. • 16. Meet Jonathan. Yes, the Jonathan of Jonathan’s Place, pictured with Lisa Matthews, founder of Jonathan’s Place. He’s all grown up, in college and has the world in front of him. We’ll stop ourselves before we get too sentimental. Just know there are thousands of children like him in Texas - and that’s why we keep going. Your support gives us the ability to help children everyday - like Jonathan. P.O. Box 140085 Dallas, TX 75214 972.303.5303 www.jpkids.org
