Most Spanish-speakers recognize the playful phrase “colorín colorado” from the verse that many children and adults say after reading or sharing a story: “ ¡Y colorín, colorado, este cuento se ha acabado! ” (This story has ended!) Those who grew up speaking Spanish often smile when they hear the name of our site, because the verse brings back happy memories of childhood for people of all ages.

We realized this was a golden opportunity to forge a formal partnership. Given that one of the goals of the AFT is to enhance the professional skills of our members and improve the institutions in which they work, this was a chance to do just that.
These are not factors that will forever doom this population to failure, however. It will take a lot of work and wherewithal, but you are the experts and this is simply a bill of health to let you know what you’re up against.
We realized this was a golden opportunity to forge a formal partnership. Given that one of the goals of the AFT is to enhance the professional skills of our members and improve the institutions in which they work, this was a chance to do just that.
So is there a resource that helps you put everything together and help you? YES!! How else are we helping our members? We recently launched a web-based tool to help with instruction – the new educator’s area of the web site ColorinColorado.org – a web site developed by the AFT in partnership with the main PBS station in Washington, DC - WETA. By making high-quality material available online, for free, 24 hours a day, AFT and WETA can begin to address the pressing need for professional development in this field.
A downloadable version of a new AFT Toolkit for Teachers called “Reaching Out to Hispanic Parents of English Language Learners.” The kit includes suggestions for how to conduct a workshop for Hispanic parents on what they can do at home to help their kids read and achieve. The toolkit includes handouts as well as a videotape – which is available on-line as downloadable video segments on the web site. For many people, it helps to see models of what you’d like them to do. The videotape contains short video clips in English and Spanish that show how parents can encourage reading at home.
While Colorin Colorado is aimed to PK-12 educators, the sections on literacy are specifically targeted to K-3 educators because we know how extremely important it is to address the reading needs of young students
But we need you to keep up our success and popularity and reaching the teachers, paraprofessionals, other school-related personnel and parents who need all this information.
