How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
    What kind of media institution might
  distribute your media product and why?
    And what would be my audience for
                this product?
My Magazine was aimed towards a social group of teenagers/ young adults aged 16-21
and with a target gender being predominately male. I have represented this through
various different techniques within my magazine.
The main representation was through my choice of clothing on the models, they were
chosen to represent the modern day fashion that it is most commonly seen on
teenagers of this age range, a zip up hoody is a common item of clothing in today's
fashion especially in the music world for what would be classed as ‘Scene’ kids. ‘Scene’
kids are a type of fashion/social group that dress in order to reflect upon their musical
tastes and to imitate their musical idols.
Also I have a model displayed wearing a plain polo top with all buttons fastened, this is
a recent fashion to 2012 and I feel by demonstrating this within the magazine it
represents the magazine as keeping up with the times and being on the same
wavelength of teenagers /young adults between this age range.
The content and the feelings portrayed in my magazine
was also a big contributor to the overall representation
of a teenage audience. I have used a subject regarding
a band member’s personal/emotional issues as my
main article and headline for the front cover. I feel this
is a good indication of the target audience due to the
relevance of the article in correspondence to their age.
At that age they will be going through various
emotional journeys and experiences that are both new
and intriguing to them. By providing a story relating to
the hatred towards an ex girlfriend who was involved
in sexual relations with another man when this band
member was in university I was able to create a
emotional link between reader and article as many of
the teenagers may likely be in the process of
experiencing something similar or are experiencing
various other strong emotions that are demonstrated
within the content. Because of this teenagers will be
more likely to read it as it is relevant to their journey
into both social and mental maturity.
I believe the media institution that would distribute my magazine would most likely be
the Bauer media group. Although IPC is very good for mass marketing magazines that
are predominately male targeted I do not feel they would be the best choice for my
magazine as the only musical magazine they publish at this time is NME which is far
more sophisticated in terms of its content and target audience in comparison to my
magazine. However the Bauer media group mass produce magazines such as KERRANG
and Q which are both musical magazines aimed at a younger and less emotionally
mature range of people. I feel Bauer is more successful in targeting Explorers (from the
4c’s marketing model) which is essential for my magazine as My magazine has been
targeted towards the younger demographic- students mainly.

Part 2 to my media evaluation

  • 1. How does your media product represent particular social groups? What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? And what would be my audience for this product?
  • 2. My Magazine was aimed towards a social group of teenagers/ young adults aged 16-21 and with a target gender being predominately male. I have represented this through various different techniques within my magazine. The main representation was through my choice of clothing on the models, they were chosen to represent the modern day fashion that it is most commonly seen on teenagers of this age range, a zip up hoody is a common item of clothing in today's fashion especially in the music world for what would be classed as ‘Scene’ kids. ‘Scene’ kids are a type of fashion/social group that dress in order to reflect upon their musical tastes and to imitate their musical idols. Also I have a model displayed wearing a plain polo top with all buttons fastened, this is a recent fashion to 2012 and I feel by demonstrating this within the magazine it represents the magazine as keeping up with the times and being on the same wavelength of teenagers /young adults between this age range.
  • 3. The content and the feelings portrayed in my magazine was also a big contributor to the overall representation of a teenage audience. I have used a subject regarding a band member’s personal/emotional issues as my main article and headline for the front cover. I feel this is a good indication of the target audience due to the relevance of the article in correspondence to their age. At that age they will be going through various emotional journeys and experiences that are both new and intriguing to them. By providing a story relating to the hatred towards an ex girlfriend who was involved in sexual relations with another man when this band member was in university I was able to create a emotional link between reader and article as many of the teenagers may likely be in the process of experiencing something similar or are experiencing various other strong emotions that are demonstrated within the content. Because of this teenagers will be more likely to read it as it is relevant to their journey into both social and mental maturity.
  • 4. I believe the media institution that would distribute my magazine would most likely be the Bauer media group. Although IPC is very good for mass marketing magazines that are predominately male targeted I do not feel they would be the best choice for my magazine as the only musical magazine they publish at this time is NME which is far more sophisticated in terms of its content and target audience in comparison to my magazine. However the Bauer media group mass produce magazines such as KERRANG and Q which are both musical magazines aimed at a younger and less emotionally mature range of people. I feel Bauer is more successful in targeting Explorers (from the 4c’s marketing model) which is essential for my magazine as My magazine has been targeted towards the younger demographic- students mainly.
