                     Technology Integration Unit Outline

Name: Laura Zinser
Project Title: Exploring the Elements
Project Subject: Science
Grade Level(s): Fifth Grade

Essential Question: What creates all of our stuff?
Scaffolding What is an element?
Questions: What are atoms?
                         What are molecules?
What common elements make up objects we use daily?
                         How can elements be combined?
                         How are the elements organized?
How can you create PowerPoint slides imbedding pictures,
selecting transitions and delivering content visually to assist
others in learning about individual elements?
Assignment Students will create PowerPoint slides to give clues for their
Summary: chosen element. They will need to use photos and text on their
slides to demonstrate the properties of the element, its common
uses and provide clues so others may guess their mystery
                         element.
Approximate Length of Unit (days, weeks)
Two weeks approximately 60-90 minutes per session time.
Goals:
 Students will become familiar with the organization of the periodic table of
       elements chart.
 Students will learn how to read the periodic table of elements at a basic
       beginner level.
 Students will demonstrate that basic elements combine to form common
       everyday objects.
 Students will develop clues and create 3 PowerPoint slides to add to the class
       Mystery Element Game.
Accountability will be embedded in the PowerPoint slides. Students will also complete
graphic organizers, ISN pages, and take an end of unit quiz.

Objectives:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the following state standards:
Elements and their combinations account for all the varied types of matter in the
world. As a basis for understanding this concept:
a. Students know that during chemical reactions the atoms in the reactants rearrange
to form products with different properties.
b. Students know all matter is made of atoms, which may combine to form molecules.

c. Students know metals have properties in common, such as high electrical and
thermal conductivity. Some metals, such as aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni),
copper (Cu), silver (Ag), and gold (Au), are pure elements; others, such as steel
and brass, are composed of a combination of elemental metals.
d. Students know that each element is made of one kind of atom and that the elements
are organized in the periodic table by their chemical properties.
h. Students know living organisms and most materials are composed of just a few
elements.
i. Students know the common properties of salts, such as sodium chloride (NaCl).
Lesson Plan Sequence of Events – give day-to-day details:
Day 1 – Students will read chapter in science text book to provide an introduction to the
topic and view the Brain Pop video on the Periodic Table of Elements and a PowerPoint
presentation of the structure of the table.
Day 2- Students will complete the Atoms Family Activity and view the Brain Pop video
on atoms, pages will be added to their science ISN.
Day 3- Students will work in a small group using iPads or cell phones to explore the
Periodic Table using a QR code activity. Students will use a kid friendly Periodic Table
to answer simple questions about 3 common elements.
Day 4- Students will work in pairs to create a sticker model of an atom and then use
toothpicks and gumdrops to create molecules
Day 5- Students will be given a mystery element to research. Using guiding questions,
students will fill out an outline of the information needed to create their 3 PowerPoint
slides.
Day 6- Students will be taught how to create a PowerPoint slide embedding a photo and
using backgrounds and slide transitions.
Days7-10- Students will be using the classroom computers to create their 3 PowerPoint
slides.
Day 11- Class viewing of the Mystery Elements Slideshow. Students will be given a note
taking guide and use the Senteo Response system to input their guess as to which element
they are seeing.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student: Learning center students will complete their slides with the
support of our learning center teacher and instructional aides.
Gifted Student: ALP’s student will be challenged to also create a video to embed
in his slide showing his elements use around the school.
