Meeting the Branding of
BBC Introducing and BBC films
“BBC Introducing is the brand for new music programmes across
the BBC radio stations, showcasing unsigned, self signed and
other emerging musical talent primarily from the UK.”
 BBC introducing is concerned with allowing new artists the
opportunity to break into mainstream music. Although BBC
introducing don’t directly deal with films their involvement with
new artists was paramount to our production. BBC introducing
supported Jaws one of the artists we interviewed.
 The initial concept behind BBC introducing is new music discovery.
BBC introducing was set up by a former Head of Live music at
Radio 1. The concept was to share and champion local bands,
within our production we used 2 local artists Mark and Jersey
Budd. We filmed all artists in locations within Leicester, further
linking with BBC introducing and showcasing the local music
scene.
 BBC introducing has hosted at Glastonbury festival every year
since 2007, it has stages at Reading and Leeds festivals and
Radio 1’s Big weekend.
 BBC introducing has worked with artists and bands featuring artists
such as Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg, The ting tings and Florence and
the machine amongst others.
 The influence of BBC introducing is know by all artists within the
industry, Jaws a band who feature within our production have
 It was important that we contacted BBC introducing artists when
researching as we felt that there was a better chance of gaining
their contact as they are looking to maximise exposure.
 Within our Film production we looked to ask questions about
artists experiences with BBC introducing. BBC introducing is
concerned with the quality of the music and not concerned by the
artists image, this is represented through our choice of location
which we choose not to film in a photo-studio with a backdrop.
Out chosen locations were natural and were you would expect to
see the artists.
 The target audience for BBC introducing isn't categorised
however we can assume that it is aimed at the artists target
audience and then appealing to a wider secondary audience of
radio listeners.
 BBC films would be part of the process in developing our film,
however it is important to consider the impact of individual
distributors outside of conventional televisions channels of the
BBC. The niche nature of our production means that our
production will also appeal to independent distributors who will
enable us to reach a wider target audience.
 In doing this we looked at short film distributors which are
accessible online: SoHo short are a London Short Film Club
through which independent film makers like us can access
distributors enabling work to reach worldwide audience.
 Outside conventional TV we would be looking to contact ‘Future
Shorts’ a distribution team who set up showcases globally.
Holding events such as The Future shorts festival in which there
is an extensive global community of people who run these
events, showcasing the film to large numbers.
 Futureshorts look to champion new and innovative short films
like ours, because of the independent nature of ‘Futureshorts’ we
also believe that they have a similar target audience.
 Throughout our documentary “Signed” shows frequent links with
Leicester, therefore we will be looking to gain the support of the
Phoenix in Leicester a local independent cinema house.
 The cinema features new independent films like ours. This would
provide an opportunity for us to showcase the film and gain
support from the local target audience.
 Furthermore Phoenix offer opportunities for funding through adult
bursary schemes, offering a bursary of £500 for people who want
to be creative and experimental within the industry within the
Phoenix. We could apply this money to our production as a
method of funding.
 BBC films is the feature film making element of the BBC, co-
producing some of the most successful British films of recent
years.
Including : Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Quartet, Salmon Fishing in
the Yemen, My Week with Marilyn, Jane Eyre, In the Loop, An
Education, StreetDance 3D, Fish Tank, Nativity!, Iris, Notes on a
Scandal and Billy Elliot.
 BBC films co-produces around 8 films a year, working in
partnership with major UK and International distributors.
 Within BBC films there is minimal branding or conventions that
are evident throughout all bbc film, productions, the diversity of
their films represents this. However we looked to choose BBC
films because of our concentration on BBC introducing. Being
with BBC films also offered us the funding and flexibility to create
a production which was what we had planned and wanted to do.
 It concentrates on independent film making and looks to create
strong British films with range and ambition, we believe that our
production conforms to this as although there are similar
products out there ours looks at a topic more specifically, in
which there is no other film similar.
 “We are committed to finding and developing new talent, as well
as collaborating with some of the foremost writers and directors
in the industry”
 Our documentary ‘Pushes boundaries’ within BBC films as it is a
film documentary therefore unlike anything BBC films has
previously done.
 In order to gain commission from the BBC you have to enter a
BBC pitching ideas online entry. Within this there is the
opportunity to pitch towards different genres including BBC
player only. We would be looking to apply to the BBC because of
the large diversity which they present, furthermore we would be
looking to apply to this scheme as a ready developed production.
 We would be looking to pitch our brand for commissioning within
the “Features and Formats BBC One and BBC Two” section
of application or “Music & Events”
 In doing this we would be looking to secure funding by submitting
the initial concept of the film documentary through ECOM an
online application service.
