LOWELL—On a fall Friday, teach-
ers, administrators, city officials and
union leaders gathered to celebrate
yet another marker of success in the
remarkable story of Lowell’s Char-
lotte M. Murkland School. Identified
as one of the state’s lowest perform-
ing schools just a year ago, student
achievement here has increased so
much that the school could now be
designated Level 1, or top status, by
the state. What’s more, schools in
Lowell overall have demonstrated
marked improvement, the number of
Level 1 schools increasing by 2/3 just
this year.
