WHO ARE YOU? Can your
SOUL DIE? What is
MANKINDS' Hope after
DEATH?
One of the most important doctrines of the New Testament
scriptures is the Hope of Resurrection. We will consider
biblical answers to many interesting question such as: If we
automatically go to heaven or hell at death, what is
significance of the resurrection and judgment? What will life
be like for people on earth after resurrection is passed?,
etc.
2. 2
When will people come out of
their “tombs” and in what form?
“Do not marvel at this, for an
hour is coming in which all
those in the tombs will hear
His voice. And they will come
out, the ones having done
good into a resurrection of
life; and the ones having
practiced evil into a
resurrection of judgment.” –
[John 5:28-29]

What is Life?
Understanding Life and Death
through the first man
God created Adam
Adam’s soul did not exist before
the creation
And Jehovah God formed the
man out of dust from the
ground, and blew into his
nostrils the breath of life;
and man became a living soul.
[Gen 2:7]

What is Death?
God told Adam after he
disobeyed his word in Eden
By the sweat of your face you shall
eat bread until your return to the
ground. For you have been taken out
of it; for you are dust, and to
dust you shall return. [Gen 3:19]
Put not your trust in nobles, in a son
of man, for there is no salvation in
him. His breath will go out, he
returns to the earth; his thoughts
perish in that day. [Psa 146:3-4]

What is Death?
Our thoughts perish with death
Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of
man, in whom there is no help. His breath
goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that
very day his thoughts perish. [Psa 146:3-4]
All our Knowledge, Hope and feelings
perish at death
For to him that is joined to all the living there
is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead
lion. For the living know that they shall die: but
the dead know not any thing, neither have they
any more a reward; for the memory of them is
forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and
their envy, is now perished; neither have they
any more a portion for ever in any thing that is
done under the sun. [Ecc 9:4-6]
6. 6
What is Death?
Death does not differentiate between rich and
poor, wise and foolish, righteous and wicked
The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool
walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also
that one event happeneth to them all. [Ecc 2:14]
All things come alike to all: there is one event to the
righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the
clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth,
and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is
the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth
an oath. [Ecc 9:2]
7. 7
What is Death?
Same destiny for animal and man
– there is no difference
I said in mine heart concerning the
estate of the sons of men, that God
might manifest them, and that they
might see that they themselves are
beasts. For that which befalleth the
sons of men befalleth beasts; even
one thing befalleth them: as the one
dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they
have all one breath; so that a
man hath no preeminence above a
beast: for all is vanity. [Ecc 3:18-19]
8. 8
What is Death?
Death is a state of eternal Sleep
No alarm you set will wake you up,
neither will you dream nor will you
snore
And why dost thou not pardon my
transgression, and take away mine iniquity?
for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou
shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not
be. [Job 7:21]
Consider and hear me, O LORD my God:
lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of
death; [Psa 13:3]
So David slept with his fathers, and was
buried in the city of David. [1Ki 2:10]
9. 9
Soul is NOT
the Breath of Life
The Breath of life belongs to God.
It’s the “power” that keeps us alive
then the dust shall return to the earth
as it was, and the spirit shall return to
God who gave it. [Ecc 12:7]
And behold, I, even I, am bringing a
flood of waters on the earth in order to
destroy all flesh in which is the
breath of life from under the
heavens. Everything which is on the
earth shall die. [Gen 6:17]
Let Jehovah, the God of the spirits
of all flesh, appoint a man over the
congregation [Num 27:16]

10. 10
What is the Soul?
Soul means
Life
Breathing Creatures
Human emotions of life
Examples – Animals are
souls
And God created the great sea
animals, and all that creeps,
having a living soul, which
swarmed the waters,
according to its kind; and
every bird with wing according
to its kind. And God saw that
it was good. [Gen 1:21]
11. 11
Examples of Soul in the Bible
People are souls
These were the sons of
Zilpah, whom Laban gave
to his daughter Leah; and
she bore these to Jacob,
sixteen souls. [Gen
46:18]
Soul is Life
Please say that you are
my sister, so that it may
be well with me for your
sake, and my soul
shall live because of
you. [Gen 12:13]
12. 12
Examples of Soul in the Bible
Soul is Human feelings
And he also made
delicious things and
came to his father. And
he said to his father, Let
my father rise and eat
from the game of his son,
so that your soul may
bless me. [Gen 27:31]
And his soul clung to
Dinah, the daughter of
Jacob. And he loved the
girl, and spoke to the
heart of the girl. [Gen
34:3]
13. 13
What happens to the soul
after we die?
The soul DIES
We are Dust and go to Dust –
just like plants/animals
For that which happens to the
sons of men, and that which
happens to beasts, even one
event is to them. As this one
dies, so that one dies; yea, one
breath is to all; so that there
is to the man no advantage over
the beast; for all is vanity. All go
to one place; all are of the
dust, and all return to the
dust. [Ecc 3:19-20]
14. 14
All Souls Die
Behold, they are all My souls.
As the soul of the father, also
the soul of the son, they are
Mine. The soul that sins, it
shall die. [Eze 18:4]
The concept that the body is
the house of soul that
continues to live is not taught
in the bible
Soul = body with life
Dead Body = Dead Soul
15. 15
Soul is mortal like the body
And Samson said, Let my
soul die with the Philistines!
And he bowed mightily, and
the house fell on the rulers,
and on all the people who
were in it. And the dead that
he killed in his death were
more than those he killed in
his life. [Jdg 16:30]
And a man, when he strikes
the soul from any man,
dying he shall die. [Lev 24:17]
Let my soul die
16. 16
Why do we Die?
Adam sinned
Sentence of Death was
passed on mankind
We have all sinned
Because of this, even as sin
entered the world through
one man, and death through
sin, so also death passed to
all men, inasmuch as all
sinned. [Rom 5:12]
God said: You will die
Serpent said: You will not die
18. 18
Resurrection is the only
escape from Death
And at that time, Michael shall stand
up, the great ruler who stands for the
sons of your people. And there shall be a
time of distress, such as has not been
from the being of a nation until that
time. And at that time, your people shall
be delivered, everyone that shall be
found written in the Book. And many
of those sleeping in the earth's
dust shall awake, some to
everlasting life, and some to
reproaches and to everlasting
abhorrence. And those who act wisely
shall shine as the brightness of the
firmament, and those turning many to
righteousness as the stars forever and
ever. [Dan 12:1-3]
Note How Daniel refers to death
as a state of “sleep”
19. 19
The only man to be resurrected
permanently from death till date is Jesus
But now Christ has been
raised from the dead;
He became the
firstfruit of those
having fallen asleep.
For since death is
through man, also
through a Man is a
resurrection of the
dead; for as in Adam all
die, so also in Christ all
will be made alive. [1Co
15:20-22]
Note How Paul refers to death
as a state of “sleep”
20. 20
The only man to have gone to heaven is
Jesus Christ!
Men, brothers, it is permitted to say to you with
plainness as to the patriarch David, that he both
died and was buried, and his tomb is among us
until this day. Being a prophet, then, and knowing
that God swore with an oath to him that of the fruit of
his loin, as concerning flesh, to raise the Christ to sit
on his throne, foreseeing, he spoke about the
resurrection of the Christ, "that His soul was not left
in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption."
This Jesus, God raised up, of which we all are
witnesses. Then being exalted to the right of God, and
receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit from the
Father, He poured out this which you now see and
hear.
For David did not ascend into Heaven, but he
says, "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand
until I place those hostile to You as a footstool for
Your feet." [Act 2:29-35]
King David is still in his grave
21. 21
What happens at the
Resurrection?
Do not marvel at this, for an
hour is coming in which all those
in the tombs will hear His voice.
And they will come out, the ones
having done good into
a resurrection of life;
and the ones having practiced
evil into
a resurrection of judgment.
[Joh 5:28-29]
22. 22
How can you be part of the
Resurrection of Life?
He "will give to each
according to his works:"
everlasting life truly to those
who with patience in good
work seeking glory and honor
and incorruptibility; but to
the ones truly disobeying the
truth out of self-interest, and
obeying unrighteousness, will
be anger and wrath, [Rom
2:6-8]
23. 23
What is life after
Resurrection?
For in the resurrection
they neither marry nor
are given in marriage,
but they are as the
angels of God in
Heaven. [Mat 22:30]
"Then the king will say to
those on his right, 'Come,
you who have been blessed
by my Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for
you from the foundation
of the world. [Mat 25:31-
34]
24. 24
When will the Resurrection
occur? - At the return of Christ
But I do not want you to be ignorant,
brothers, concerning those who sleep, that
you not grieve, as the rest also, not having
hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and
rose again, even so God will also
bring with Him all those who have
fallen asleep through Jesus.
Because the Lord Himself shall come down
from Heaven with a commanding shout of
an archangel's voice, and with God's
trumpet.
And the dead in Christ will rise again first.
Then we who remain alive will be caught up
together with them in the clouds to a
meeting with the Lord in the air. And so we
will always be with the Lord. [1Th 4:13-17]
Death a state of sleep for the faithful,
eternal sleep for the ignorant
25. 25
What happens to the body
and soul after Resurrection?
Not all flesh is the same.
Humans have one kind
of flesh, animals in
general have another,
birds have another, and
fish have still another.
[1Co 15:39]
This is how it will be at
the resurrection of the
dead. What is planted is
decaying, what is raised
cannot decay. [1Co
15:42]
We will be like Jesus
26. 26
Summary
We do not go to heaven (or hell) when we die
We go to the dust
Our body, soul, thoughts, feelings all perish
Jesus is the only man to have escaped death because God
raised him from the dead. Jesus was sinless therefore did
not deserve to die like Adam.
But God raised him up and destroyed the pains of death, since it was
impossible for him to be held in its power. [Act 2:24]
Our only escape from death is the hope of Resurrection in
Jesus:
For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead
also came through a man. [1Co 15:21]
At Jesus’ return we can be raised to eternal life if we are
found in Christ or died believing in Christ
