4. Ambient sound
• Ambient sound means the background noise
present in a scene – the noise of an office in
the background.
5. Sound bridge
• Music that crosses over from 1 scene to the
next – think of it as transition music.
6. Sound motif
• A recurring sound that hints to the same event
/ character – the jaws theme tune is an
example of a sound motif.
7. Voiceover
• Dialogue over the scene – possibly narration,
possibly what the character is thinking – you
can’t see the person speaking, only hear
them.
9. Score
• A piece of music created especially for a
programme or scene – you would probably
only recognise this if they showed you the
credits or introduction (e.g. eastenders theme
tune)
11. Synchronous sound
• Synchronous Sounds are those sounds which
are synchronized or matched with what is
viewed. For example: if the film portrays a
character playing the piano, the sounds of the
piano are projected.
12. Asynchronous sound
• Sound which is indigenous to the action but
not precisely synchronized with the action.
13. Sound effects
• Added sound during editing (post production)
to make a certain effect – lightening etc or any
non-diagetic sound.
14. Sound mixing
• The way sounds are mixed / blended together
– if there is more than one sound being played
at the same time or merge into each other
before they change.
15. Sound perspective
• Sound perspective refers to the apparent
distance of a sound – is it close or far away
from the camera.

• The theme song for the TV drama. Specially
created for that show e.g. Eastenders opening
and closing.

• When a character talks to the audience –
addresses the camera lens.
