Minimizing Waste at Mangakahia Area School:Overview of the All Weather Recycling Station,[object Object]
My Vision,[object Object],Vision:,[object Object],To see Mangakahia Area School become a Minimal Waste Organization through dealing efficiently with rubbish in a way that upholds the values of enviro schools and contributes towards a sustainable future,[object Object]
My Goal,[object Object],Goal: ,[object Object],To promote and utilize an All Weather Recycling Station in an efficient way that will minimize waste at Mangakahia Area School and within the surrounding community in a way that contributes towards a sustainable future.,[object Object]
Individuals and Organizations Involved in this Strategy.,[object Object]
Finding correct area for the Recycling Station,[object Object],Three main areas were considered as excellent places for the recycling station:,[object Object],1. In between the library and music room.,[object Object],2. In a space beside the gymnasium. ,[object Object],3. In the totara grove near the front of the school.,[object Object],Ultimately we chose the totara grove as it is a focal position within our school. ,[object Object]

Step 2: Bins to Recycling Station,[object Object]
Implications,[object Object],Immediateimplications,[object Object],A sit down lunch period of 10 minutes duration. Possibly from half hour interval. E.g.,[object Object],	Interval:	11:00-11:20,[object Object],	Period 3: 	11:20-12:20,[object Object],	Period 4: 	12:20-1:20,[object Object],	Lunch:		 1:20-1:30 - During this time all students are to be seated in regulation class areas “No exceptions!!”,[object Object],[object Object]
1 teacher will maintain primary and intermediate blocks.
1 teacher walks around perimeter of these areas checking and recording those that are not seated.	Students are not permitted to leave areas until released by teacher on duty.                                                                                         ,[object Object],	1:30-2:00pm- Includes sports practices, meetings etc.,[object Object],	Period 5: 	Class Time. Those on duty (4-5 per class) 2.00pm – 2.15pm,[object Object]

Secondary staff and students – possibly in the Whare as there is a need for informal collaborative discussion for students and   teachers to take ownership of our proposals. Also a suitable time to discuss reasons for trying to make our school more sustainable ,[object Object],  and promote future MASEE groups.,[object Object],[object Object],                of the strategy from a Junior School point of view. Junior MASEE groups will also be on the agenda with Junior School.,[object Object],	The purpose of these consultation processes is ownership as previously stated, making systems that best suit the needs of all, and,[object Object],	probably most importantly, creating ways of linking subjects and class levels etc to make Education for Sustainability a seamless ,[object Object],                             education process.,[object Object]
Future Implications,[object Object], ,[object Object],Look at crushing tin and depositing as scrap -possibly class level enterprise as this would be a money making venture.,[object Object],Recycle flat paper to create recycled paper -possible enterprise for Y9/10 - making embossed school writing paper, cards etc – contact – Jill Cutford ex Paper mill.,[object Object],Collecting tin caps for the art room and for the primary school, etc.,[object Object],WE are very open to ideas that may come from all discussion we have with other people.,[object Object],Both would be effective and economical options and would promote sustainability principles.,[object Object],Some modifications have been made in consultation with the principal, senior management, staff and students with some minor procedures adapted to become more efficient.  The over all concept of the plan has been well received and positively reinforced by The Board Of Trustees (partner) and groups and organizations. ,[object Object]
Evaluation,[object Object],Concentrating on the Usage and routines of The All Weather Recycling Station as my personal action during Achievement standard 3.1 has had a big impact on schools attitudes towards sustainability.  The success criteria will be evaluated by the S.M.A.R.T process. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.,[object Object]
The Success Criteria for my Action: Usage Rosters and Routines,[object Object],Specific: ,[object Object],Careful planning is being used to keep the utilization of the All Weather recycling station ongoing and cyclic – An actual focus on the recycling management practices.,[object Object],Measurable: ,[object Object],A cyclic and continual routine for the running of the recycling station and removal of waste to the recycling station has been established and used correctly and efficiently – There is a notable drop in amount of debris around school grounds. We have lessened the volume but no necessarily the weight.  Sorting is now a priority with decline in waste stage 2,[object Object],Achievable :,[object Object],All management procedures are achieved. An example of this is bins’ being returned to correct areas after waste has been distributed at the recycling station.,[object Object],Realistic:,[object Object],An enduring and sustainable project that is capable of being student driven and part of life skill learning.,[object Object],Timely:,[object Object],Refuse is a worldwide issue.  Our schools attitudes and values will encourage everyone to use more environmentally friendly practices.,[object Object]
The Strengths of Achieving the Success Criteria for Mangakahia Area School are:,[object Object],Whole school vision,[object Object],Student empowerment,[object Object],Positive behaviors, attitudes, knowledge and awareness are built through collaborative and cohesive teamwork.,[object Object],Development of respect and student pride in creating a more sustainable future for our school,[object Object],Efficient and sustainable routines are developed cyclically for removing waste from within the school that lead to a sustainable northland infrastructure.,[object Object],Movement from extrinsic to intrinsic reward for all who contribute towards this action,[object Object],Working co-operatively and collaboratively with groups and organizations such as Northland Regional Council and Whangarei District Council and valuing the importance of these organizations. ,[object Object]
The Weaknesses that Mangakahia Area School will have to face during this Action and for Further Planning.,[object Object],Insufficient time to complete all projects and goals because of barriers such as climate conditions and sickness,[object Object],Incorrect and haphazard use of tools and equipment.,[object Object],Students showing a lapse of motivation.  Strategies will be needed to be set in place to prevent this.,[object Object],Yearly change over/movement of staff and students. It’s a perennial problem that needs careful planning to ensure a seamless transition from year to year,[object Object],Routines not achieved correctly and attracting unwanted pests and rodents etc ,[object Object]
Judgement on the Effectiveness of My Action,[object Object],I believe that the utilization and routines of the All Weather Recycling Station, which has been the focal point of my study has been a very worthwhile focus because:,[object Object],By studying this I have discovered the full implications that littering has on our school environment,[object Object],I have found that many problems cant be solved unless full co-operation and collaboration is happening efficiently and effectively amongst everyone involved,[object Object],I have been apart of environmentally positive relationship building of staff, students and community of Mangakahia.,[object Object],This plan has been time consuming as I have been inclined to take sideway paths that although need exploring have slowed my progress, however this has been rewarding to travel these paths because of the new experiences and collaborative discussion with other students, organizations and individuals who are working towards the same end.,[object Object]
Contribution to a Sustainable Future,[object Object],My planned action contributes to a sustainable future by being included in the overall plan for the All Weather Recycling Station.  The utilization and routines are an integral component in this plan.  Implementation of it has broken down social barriers amongst students, staff and our community.  All of these groups and organizations now have the similar vision and the attitudes, values and behaviours that are established work towards creating a Sustainable Future.  The inter-relationship between people (our students, staff and community) and our environment become more intimate and compelling as we ‘own’ what we are doing.  Therefore it is obvious My Personal Action does cover the four aspects of sustainability.,[object Object]
Personal Response,[object Object],Globally recycling has had a massive increase in importance to many individuals because people around the world are beginning to understand that the amount of rubbish we produce needs to be reduced to make our planet more sustainable.  Ecosystems in our environment will not be able to survive this onslaught of rubbish if it continues.  ,[object Object],Statistically schools have not been as quick to deal with this environmental issue and can be known for not being completely litter conscious.  This can be measured by the lack of enviro secondary schools throughout New Zealand.  In our school this can be measured by the amount of rubbish previously taken to the Kokopu Refuse Station.,[object Object],This strategy we have introduced may not have minimized the weight of rubbish but it has minimized the volume as we are sorting refuse in a more eco friendly way and using good waste management practices. These are:,[object Object],Encouraging students to not use glad wrap,[object Object],Using paper and tin for class level recycling enterprises,[object Object],Composting, worm farming and pig feeding routines.,[object Object],These activities as well as increasing community involvement are integral to our 2010 and 2011 vision.  This vision has been easier for us to achieve thanks to the co-operation of the Whangarei District Council in allowing us to use their infrastructure to promote a healthier and environmentally friendly lifestyle for our students and community and thus creating a more sustainable future for us all.  ,[object Object]
