7. Moore’s Law
THE NUMBER OF
TRANSISTORS
USING THE SAME AREA
ON A CHIP
DOUBLES EVERY 18-24
MONTHS
8. Gordon Moore is the co-founder
Who is this of Intel - they make computer
guy? chips. A lot of computer chips.
Back in 1965 he estimated that
the number of integrated circuits
(switches) that could be put on a
computer chip would double
about every two years.
Grandpa Moore
9.
10. With chips betting smaller and
smaller, the amount of
Bytes and bits information they can store
increases
BInary digiT = BIT
8 bits make a Byte:
0 = 00000000
1 = 00000001
2 = 00000010
...
254 = 11111110
255 = 11111111
You can count up to 256 this way (you count the zero)
11. When you start talking about lots of bytes, you get
into prefixes like kilo, mega and giga:
Bytes kilobyte = KB = 2^10 = 1,024 bits
megabyte = MB = 2^20 = 1,048,576 bits
kilobytes
gigabyte = GB = 2^30 = 1,073,741,824 bits
megabytes terabyte = TB = 2^40 = 1,099,511,627,776 bits
whatabytes? petabyte = PB = 2^50 = 1,125,899,906,842,624 bits
That’s a lot of big numbers. Most people just remember:
Kilo = thousand 1,000
Mega = million 1,000,000
Giga = billion 1,000,000,000
Tera = trillion 1,000,000,000,000
Peta = quadrillion 1,000,000,000,000,000
(Peta is also the old greek word for “monster”)
The word “Google” comes from “googol” 1 with 100 zeros:
10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
12. Because so much data can be kept
in such a small space, storage
Evolution of devices and computers have
storage gotten better, faster and cheaper.
Here are some examples:
The software that powers the space shuttle runs on a
single MB of RAM (memory). The minimum RAM
source: requirement for Windows 7 is 1 GB ( 1,000 MB).

13. Evolution of
storage
The CPU (Central Processing Unit - the brain) of Apple's
iPhone 4 is more powerful than a supercomputer
costing millions of dollars in the 1970s
A floppy disk in the 1970s held 90 KB of data. The
current highest capacity flash drive on the market
partial source:
http://www.english4it.com/reading/44 holds 256 GB (almost 3,000,000 of those disks)
14. The computer and electronic equipment that
What you seems so cool right now will probably seem old
should and silly by the time you graduate.
remember Computers can save twice as much data and run
twice as fast approximately every two years.
A byte “B” is eight bits, “b”.
The prefixes:
Kilo = thousand 1,000
Mega = million 1,000,000
Giga = billion 1,000,000,000
Tera = trillion 1,000,000,000,000
Peta = quadrillion 1,000,000,000,000,000
KB = kilobyte MB = megabyte GB = gigabyte
TB = terabyte PB = petabyte
16. What is sound?
Sound is a vibration ( 振動 )
or wave of molecules
caused by the motion
of an object.
Sound is produced when an object moves or
vibrates. Without movement there could be no
sound. When an object moves or vibrates, the
molecules around the object also vibrate.
17. How fast does
sound travel?
• It depends.
• At sea level the speed of sound is about 344.4 meters per
second.
• Water conducts sound faster than air – in fresh water,
sound travels at about 1497 meters per second at 25 °C.
• Because sound is the vibration of molecules, there is no
sound in space. So if you yell on the moon, no sound will
come out.
18. Age differences
Not everyone can hear the same noises.
Your ability to hear certain sounds gets worse as you
get older.

19. Sound Effects
• Sound effects are really important in TV, radio, and
movies. They help us understand what is happening,
and give us clues about what is happening.
• Sound effects are used so often that we usually don’t
even notice them.
• To add the sound effects into shows and movies, a
special sound engineer called a Foley artist is
needed.
20. Foley artists
Nearly all the sounds
you hear in movies were
not recorded during
filming.
For example, if you see a scene of someone walking
through the snow, the sound of walking through
snow is recorded later and added to the movie – this
is done by a Foley artist.

21. The most famous sound effect in history
• First used in a movie in 1951.
• The sound was recorded and added
to the movie later.
• It was then reused in a movie in 1953, where it got
its name.
• In the 1970s, two film students noticed this sound
being used over and over again.
• Later, they worked in movies, and put it into films
they were working on – mostly as a joke for their
friends.
