The results of a survey asking 31 people why they do not cycle in London. This forms part of a project to design a product that encourages more people to cycle. Note - the sample size was very small and is used an as indication of why people don't cycle

2. What is your reason for not cycling? 80% It’s too dangerous 17% My bike would get stolen 10% Nowhere to store the bike in my house or flat 10% I can’t afford a bike 10% I live too far away to commute by bike

3. How far do you live from work or college? 40% five to ten miles 33% one to five miles 20% more than ten miles 7% less than a mile

4. How do you usually get to work or college? 59% tube 22% bus 7% overland train 7% walking 4% car

5. Do you know anyone who cycles? 81% yes 19% no

6. What have they told you about it? The bike is often locked outside their house. they love It Fast - but not always practical They enjoy it but everyone I know who cycles has had an accident Most London cyclists are confident about being onLondon roads...its kindau are or you're not..noinbetweeners exciting in a dicing with death type way. I think for most people, cycling in London is quite dangerous Scary but love it for the freedom Fast and effective, but I know people whose bike got stolen as well

7. Will the introduction of Cycle Superhighways encourage you to cycle? 52% yes 48% no might do, but what about the dangerous factor? I might still get hit by a bus! He needs to get rid of the lorries in London before he adds more cyclists to the mix. I really do think that man is quite thick. Also more bike parking spaces and better anti bike crime I'd like to, but I live on the 3rd floor above a shop in Brixton and have no where to keep my bike. Perhaps, but I feel it's more of a helmet issue for me. It's unsafe not to wear one but it messes up my hair if I do. The only issue for me would be over crowding on these new lanes. Someone Iknow died cycling on the streets inLondon, so it's not a top priority of mine to do it.

8. What would it take for you to start cycling? A radical change in the way London roads are designed that give cyclists much more space away from buses and motorbikes in particular bike lanes and good weather. more 20 mph area For a scheme to be introduced that is proven to be safe, with a big, defined enough cycle lane - like in Amsterdam! I cycled in Amsterdam and the roads felt more safe in general and I had an overall sense that the other drivers were more sensitive to cyclists. again its a safety issue motorist's have no respect. also better storage in and around home and work No lorries in central London and fools like Boris away from the strings that control it. a guaranteed that my bike will not get stolen and that drivers would pay more attention to bikers Nothing could make me cycle on London roads. Other cyclists are often rude and aggressive, most have no road sense / road safety training. It's hot, sweaty, dangerous and time consuming. Safer roads and a fashionable helmet! A safe stylish helmet, some safe cycling lanes, a good raincoat and some courage.
