Cultural Competency in Our Work at WTA
A veteran volunteer leader is
working with a group of people who
are much younger than he. Some
of the workers are community
volunteers and some are WTA
staff. Younger people often feel like
they must "earn" the respect of this
older, experienced volunteer, and
thus don’t feel as respected or
welcome in the work party.

Names or naming conventions
uncommon in US mainstream
culture are often not remembered
as well or pronounced incorrectly.
“What’s your name again?” “How
do you pronounce your name
again?” “Can I just call you
[simplified name]?” These
questions and occasions become
impactful over time.

Cultural Competency in Our Work at WTA
Female volunteers feel often
excluded from the most dynamic
and technically challenging projects
like building a bridge or a rock wall
or using a crosscut saw. Some
female volunteers have expressed
hesitation to join these projects
because they feel sure they will be
pushed to the sidelines by male
volunteers.

him/her. You enjoy asking a lot of
questions to signal conversational
excitement and involvement. You also
like to touch your partner's arm from
time-to-time to signal approval for a
good idea.

You signal respect by standing at
least an arm's length away from your
partner. You constantly check your
watch or the clock for fear of running
out of time in the conversation. You

your approval and great contentment
of the conversation.

Some of the workers are community volunteers and some are WTA staff. Younger people often feel like they must "earn" the respect of this older, experienced volunteer, and thus don’t feel as respected or welcome in the work party. Cultural Competency in Our Work at WTA Female volunteers feel often excluded from the most dynamic and technically challenging projects like building a bridge or a rock wall or using a crosscut saw. Some female volunteers have expressed hesitation to join these projects because they feel sure they will be pushed to the sidelines by male volunteers. You enjoy asking a lot of questions to signal conversational excitement and involvement. You also like to touch your partner's arm from time-to-time to signal approval for a good idea. You constantly check your watch or the clock for fear of running out of time in the conversation.
