• Raise awareness that residentials do not need to be expensive … they must
be affordable and inclusive to be brilliant.

Editor's Notes

  1. Since 2009 Learning Away has been working closely with 60 primary, secondary and special partner schools to produce some compelling research about the impact of residentials. Conducted with the expertise of York Consulting and with the funding support of the Paul Hamlin Foundation Over 5 years these partners have developed and tested a huge range of new and exciting residential programmes Working to boost GCSE attainment Support transition Inspire KS2 writers Experiences range from camping in school grounds to a fortnight stay at Hampton court palace Impact has been evaluated using surveys (pre and post residentials with students (11,461), parents (718) and staff (over 500), focus groups (over 100) and testing hypothoseses that emerged from the first 2 years of action research. In June 2015 York Consulting published a final report

The Learning Away website www.learningaway.org.uk now hosts over 100 good practice case studies, alongside material to help ‘make the case’ for residential experiences to school leaders, governors, parents and Ofsted. This includes a series of practical resources for teachers and visit leaders, including planning information, activity ideas, downloadable templates, presentations and films.
