Course Description

This course provides an overview of various public health interventions by situating these interventions
within various classificatory frames. Lectures on these classificatory frames will be supplemented by
inputs from health development practitioners who will discuss their experience of carrying out these
interventions in the field.

Course Requirements and Grading System

                                         4.7 < X :A B+: 4.7 > X > 4.3
                                   4.3 > X > 3.9 :B C+: 3.9 > X > 3.5
                                   3.5 > X > 3.0 :C D: 3.0 > X > 2.0
                                               2.0 > X: F

                                               8 Quizzes: 40%
                                              Term paper: 20%
                                                 Finals: 20%
                                               Recitation: 20%

Graded Recitation:
All students are expected to have read the assigned readings before coming to class. Students will be
called at random to recite. In those instances when students volunteer to answer, priority will be given to
those who have not recited recently and then to those individuals with lower grades in the class.

Students will be graded from 0 to 3 each time they go through graded recitation (not all recitation is
graded). Intelligent questions or insights raised in class may be considered graded recitation. The
denominator of graded recitation is fixed at 50 points (unless the rule regarding cellular phones and
beepers applies). Every point in excess of 50 points will add 0.01 to the students’ lowest long test.

Class Policies:
1.     Students must identify themselves on their answer sheets for their long tests, finals, and quizzes
       only by using the last four digits of their ID number. Students who write their names will not
       receive a grade higher than 4.0 for that requirement.
2.     Lateness is considered a cut.
3.     Students are discouraged from leaving the classroom once the class has started.
4.     Students must stand when called to recite.
5.     Cellular phones and beepers must be switched off or put on mute mode. Owners of cellular
       phones or beepers that ring in the middle of class must step out. If no one acknowledges that it
       was his/her cellular phone that went off, the class will be given graded recitation that will increase
       the graded recitation denominator.

Consultation may be done after class daily.          Students may also send e-mail to the teacher at

Ds 175.83 Survey of Public Health Interventions

  • 1. Survey of Public Health Interventions Summer 2012-2013 DS 175.83 Leland Joseph R. Dela Cruz Course Description This course provides an overview of various public health interventions by situating these interventions within various classificatory frames. Lectures on these classificatory frames will be supplemented by inputs from health development practitioners who will discuss their experience of carrying out these interventions in the field. Course Requirements and Grading System 4.7 < X :A B+: 4.7 > X > 4.3 4.3 > X > 3.9 :B C+: 3.9 > X > 3.5 3.5 > X > 3.0 :C D: 3.0 > X > 2.0 2.0 > X: F 8 Quizzes: 40% Term paper: 20% Finals: 20% Recitation: 20% Graded Recitation: All students are expected to have read the assigned readings before coming to class. Students will be called at random to recite. In those instances when students volunteer to answer, priority will be given to those who have not recited recently and then to those individuals with lower grades in the class. Students will be graded from 0 to 3 each time they go through graded recitation (not all recitation is graded). Intelligent questions or insights raised in class may be considered graded recitation. The denominator of graded recitation is fixed at 50 points (unless the rule regarding cellular phones and beepers applies). Every point in excess of 50 points will add 0.01 to the students’ lowest long test. Class Policies: 1. Students must identify themselves on their answer sheets for their long tests, finals, and quizzes only by using the last four digits of their ID number. Students who write their names will not receive a grade higher than 4.0 for that requirement. 2. Lateness is considered a cut. 3. Students are discouraged from leaving the classroom once the class has started. 4. Students must stand when called to recite. 5. Cellular phones and beepers must be switched off or put on mute mode. Owners of cellular phones or beepers that ring in the middle of class must step out. If no one acknowledges that it was his/her cellular phone that went off, the class will be given graded recitation that will increase the graded recitation denominator.
