5. THE BIG 3 - BLOGGING
Blog (a blend of the term web log) – can be a noun or a verb.
A blog is a type of website or a part of a website supposed to be
updated with new content from time to time.
Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries
of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such
as graphics or video.
Entries are displayed in reverse-chronological order.
Most good quality blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave
comments. This interactivity distinguishes them from other
static websites.
Many blogs provide commentary on a particular subject.
6. TYPES OF BLOGS
Although most blogs are textual, some focus on different topics:
• Art (art blog)
• Sketches (sketchblog)
• Links (linklog)
• Photographs (photoblog)
• Videos (vlogging or video blogging)
• Music (mp3 blog)
• Audio (podcasting)
• Spam (splog)
• Microblogging – very short posts
• Mixed media types (tumblelog)
7. BLOGGING PLATFORMS
Which platform is right for me? (all free, of course!)
• Wordpress - a free hosting solution that has the powerful
wordpress software behind it. (WTBDO, Thunderettes, LIFE)
• Blogger - The features of WordPress but with more control
over design.
• Tumblr (a tumblelog platform) - A hybrid between Twitter’s
micro-blogging sensibilities combined with the full, entry-
based approach of a traditional blog. No expertise needed!
(Fosters, LCD, Chris MCE)
8. THE NEW BLOGGING RULES
THE OLD RULE THE NEW RULE

answers. The community likes imperfection.
9. BLOGGING – HOW TO GET STARTED…
1. Choose your platform!
2. Name your blog & dermine your “voice”
3. Connect it with other social networks (send your
posts to facebook, tweet your posts, and feed your
tweets to your blog)
4. Tell the world about your blog!
5. Get writing. Integrate it into your daily routine.
6. Subscribe to other relevant blogs, and share
content readily.
10. BLOGGING DOS!
1. Pictures! – Include pictures in your blog posts – they’re a great way to
enhance your writing and tell your story, but they also serve as a great way to
break up your posts – making them easier to read.
2. Content – The most important “do” is to have good content! This is what will
keep people reading, and bring people back. Be yourself, be friendly, and just
write!
3. Vision & Mission – Blogs without a vision are like boats sailing in a river
without a rudder. Achieving blogging goals should be your priority!
11. BLOGGER’S CODE OF CONDUCT
1. Take responsibility not just for your own words, but for the
comments you allow on your blog.
2. Label your tolerance level for abusive comments.
3. Consider eliminating anonymous comments.
4. Ignore the trolls.
5. Take the conversation offline, and talk directly, or find an
intermediary who can do so.
6. If you know someone who is behaving badly, tell them so.
7. Don’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person.
13. RSS FEEDS EXPLAINED
What is RSS?
RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related
sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.
Why RSS? Benefits and Reasons for using RSS
RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by
retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit
each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter. The
number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names like Yahoo News.
What do I need to do to read an RSS Feed? RSS Feed Readers and News Aggregators
Feed Reader or News Aggregator software allow you to grab the RSS feeds from various sites and display
them for you to read and use.
A variety of RSS Readers are available for different platforms. Some popular feed readers include
Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac), FeedReader (Windows), and NewsGator (Windows - integrates
with Outlook). There are also a number of web-based feed readers available. My Yahoo, Bloglines, and
Google Reader are popular web-based feed readers.
Once you have your Feed Reader, it is a matter of finding sites that syndicate content and adding their RSS
feed to the list of feeds your Feed Reader checks. Many sites display a small icon with the acronyms
RSS, XML, or RDF to let you know a feed is available.

The modern blog evolved from the online diary, where people would keep a running account of their personal lives. The earliest blogs were from 1994, although the term wasn’t coined until 1999.
Although there are many more options, here are a few! Wordpress – the most powerful, and has the most options. Unlike many blog hosts, WordPress offers a free hosting solution at its WordPress.com domain as well as the ability to download its powerful software for private use on third-party hosting solutions. This means that, as your blog grows, it can follow you from humble beginnings on the free WordPress servers to a more powerful hosting solution appropriate for your newfound success.Blogger - For those who enjoy the features of WordPress but want more control over their blog’s design, Blogger is a fantastic solution. The website allows every design or template to be customized in a text editor on the website; designers can use the service’s simple tags to place content wherever they wish, and can use standard XHTML to create a design around Blogger’s content.BlogspotTumblr – the easiest to use, set up, and connect with. – The best way to think of a Tumblr blog is as a hybrid of Twitter’s micro-blogging sensibilities combined with the full, entry-based approach of a traditional blog. Tumblr is a free blog host that offers users a rich experience both in the way they public entries as well as in how those entries are read.
New Rule: Blog when you have something to sayDon’t blog out of responsibility (although be sure to walk that fine line between abandonment and responsibility). New Rule: Size doesn’t matter, content doesToday’s audience reads blogs both for entertainment and education – and accomplishing both means using some words! The blogs we love are those that challenge us to think differently, inspire us, etc. New Rule: Link and Link OftenYou can increase the social-ness of what you’re doing by linking and linking often to whoever you can think of to link to!New Rule: Overlapping satellite communities=successWhile blogging is a great way to share stories, it can be challenging to drive readers to your blog. By connecting with Facebook & Twitter, you can automate your posts to FB/Twitter whenever you post on your Blog. New Rule: The Community Likes ImperfectionToday’s bloggers don’t have all the answers, and readers prefer that they’re not perfect. It’s okay to start a conversation and not resolve it.http://outspokenmedia.com/blogging/outdated-blog-rules/
In internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
