# 1i This question deals with ideal- linear polarizers- a- With unpolari.docx

1i This question deals with ideal, linear polarizers: a. With unpolarized light incident on a linear polarizer, you measure a power of 2mW after the polarizer. A second polarizer is then inserted into the system, and you then measure 0.5 mW What is the angle between the pass axes of the two polarizers? b. With 5 mW of light of an unknown polarization incident on a linear polarizer, you measure no light after the polarizer. If you put another linear polarizer before the one used above with its pass axis oriented 60° with respect to the other, how much power should you measure? at (b) but now putting the additional polarizer after the first rather than before c. it.
Solution
Given ,
when unpolarized light is incident on linear polarizer power is measured as 2mw
let it be I O =2mW
When second polarizer is inserted ,power is measured to be 0.5mW
Let it be I T =0.5mW
CALCULATE I O /I T = 0.5/2
=4
WE HAVE ( 1/COS 2 THETA)= I O /I T
( 1/COS 2 THETA)= 4
COS 2 THETA=1/4
COS 2 THETA= COS 2 60
Theta= 60 Degrees
