when the name of Jack and the choir boys changed to the chief, Jack, and the tribe, choir boys,
became their new identities. The boys would hunt and kill the animals but would take an extra
gross step of cutting the head off of one of their pigs and placing on a stick. This graphic image
was not even the worst, but later that day their hunter identity really took over when they killed
one of their own thinking it was an animal. What the clay and blood on their faces really did was

Society frees the individual from the tyranny of disorder. When people are working together with
rules, chaos does not occur. In Lord of the Flies, the shell signifies society and order. The book
begins with Ralph and Piggy blowing the conch to call the other boys together to order and unity.
Skinner explains this by people being completely controlled by their environment. The conch is
similar to a bell at school where the boys instinctively come after hearing the noise. I agree that

Ralph and Jack fight over making the fire versus hunting for pigs. This is a conflict of desire
(hunting) and duty (making the fire). I believe people do have to face desire vs. duty decisions in
everyday life. Roger watches the littluns playing and is held back from throwing stones at them.
Rules in his old society told him it was unacceptable to hurt others, and Roger feels controlled by his
old environment (Skinner). Jack hunts and kills the first pig when his responsibility was to keep the
fire going. Jack later hits Piggy after Piggy scolds Jack for letting the fire go out when the ship
went by. Then, while reenacting the hunt of the pig, the boys use Robert to signify the pig, and
Robert begins to fear for his life as the boys get violently carried away with their reenactment.

In the novel, "Lord of the Flies," a group of British boys are left on a deserted island in the middle
of nowhere. Throughout the novel, they have conflicts between civilization and savagery, good
vs. evil, order vs. chaos, and reason vs. impulse. What would it be like if the boys were replaced
by a group of girls? Would they behave the same way they did in the novel? I believe that the girls
would act in the same behavior as the boys in all ways because, everyone is installed with evil
inside them which is their natural instinct, also because in life there is always a power struggle in

launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attack devastated most of the pacific fleet
stationed in Pearl Harbor. The devastating attack left an aftermath of 2,403 Americans dead, 12
battleships sunk, and 150 aircraft destroyed (Japanese Attack). After the attack many Americans
were filled with fear and anger. Only one day after the attack, President FDR signs the declaration

the Flies the boys plane had crashed on an island in the pacific. When the plane crashed, it left a
long path of destruction through the forest. After the crash the boys referred to the crash site as
the "Scar". The narrator explained the "Scar" as "Splintered trunks and then the drag, leaving

"beasties". What was unknown to the boys caused great fear. This fear of the unknown

Having such a divers array of people living in such close proximity, and not being able to escape
one another also influenced the attitudes, and actions of the boys. In normal circumstances, when
two people don't get along it is relatively easy to not be around them, and hang around with others
in which your more compatible with. However due to the fact that they are on a rather small
island, and that their society only consists of a few people, it is not so easy for rare intellectual to
escape people with ideals opposite to their own. Therefore often suffers defeat. This is very true in
the case of Piggy.

Lord of the Flies Research Paper
From September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945 many lives were lost because of one person's hatred
of another. Fear and intimidation play a significant role in the novel Lord of the Flies by William
Golding, just as a coercion and fear played a large role in the lives of the people ruled by the Axis
powers in WWII. WWII was filled with constant terror and unexpected attacks. On December 7,
1941 Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attack devastated most of the
pacific fleet stationed in Pearl Harbor. The devastating attack left an aftermath of 2,403
Americans dead, 12 battleships sunk, and 150 aircraft destroyed ("Japanese Attack"). After the
attack many Americans were filled with fear and anger. Only one day after the attack, President
FDR signs the declaration of war against Japan ("US declares war on Japan"). The attack on
Pearl Harbor caused the divided US to unify as one on going to war against the Axis powers.
Incidentally, In the book The Lord of the Flies the boys plane had crashed on an island in the
pacific. When the plane crashed, it left a long path of destruction through the forest. After the crash
the boys referred to the crash site as the "Scar". The narrator explained the "Scar" as "Splintered
trunks and then the drag, leaving only a fringe of palms between the scar and the sea" (Golding 10).

Fire is a symbol that cannot be described in one word. Fire represents destruction, death, hostility,
unpredictability, and the potential for limitless violence. Fire, however, also has a good side to it.
Fire can be health, hospitality, control, food, shelter, light, and strength. With these characteristics in
mind, fire has a number of different connotations. Many of these connotations can be found in one
book. Fire, in William Golding's book, Lord of the Flies, is a complex symbol, representing anarchy
and the darkness inside of us, civilization and the light in all of us, and hope, the constant motivator
for our survival.

Finally, Fire can represent hope. Fire creates smoke, a very visual symbol for either rescue or
panic. In the case of LOTF, the first is true. With the smoke that comes from the fire, the boys
have a small chance of signaling a passing ship and finding their way back home. When the Naval
officer comes to rescue the boys, he notices them because of the smoke that has now engulfed the
island, "We saw your smoke." With the hope of the rescue still burning as long as the fire stays lit,
the boys have something to survive for. Without the fire, the boys are lost and alone in a hostile
world, where it becomes kill or be killed.
Fire in the novel Lord of the Flies takes on a new form each time it is presented to us. Sometimes,
it takes the form of a violent, evil flame, bent on causing havoc and anarchy wherever it may be.
Sometimes, it may take the form of a calm, controlled, civilized flame. Other times, it may be
flame that drives a man to feats that he would have never thought he could do. Fire, in William

The boys start out on the island as ordinary, civilized, young men, and transform into accidental
killers. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, a group of twelve year old boys, marooned on a
desert island, slowly deteriorate into what can be classified as savages. Power is abused, starting
from the way only the older boys have it to the way Jack uses his power for his personal
ambitions. Their fragile society does not stay a society for long, and it soon descends into chaos ,
with everyone fighting each other. The regress from a group of boys with some sort of society to

Very soon, groups form, "Ralph sat on a fallen trunk, his left side to the sun. On his right were
most of the choir; on his left the larger boys who had not known each other before the evacuation;
before him small children squatted in the grass" (24). The boys arrange themselves in small
groups, similar to the setting of a cafeteria, as soon as they get there. In the civilized world, rules
and order are almost always expected, and anything else would be considered primitive. However,
as the boys continue living on their own, the rules slowly break down, "The world, that
understandable and lawful world, was slipping away" (79). After the boys get into a fight about the
conch and whose turn it is to speak, Ralph notes that the longer they stay on this island, the farther
they get from civilization. The author makes it clear that the tendency to steer towards brutality and
fights are within the boys the whole time, and simply brought out by the situation they are placed in.
As soon as mankind is put out of a system with consequences and punishments, it is human nature

Jack is a boy who start out as a leader in an almost military like stature in charge of the choir. He
becomes with his hunter wanting to make them more powerful and focused an arming them. He
also is desperate to be in charge. In The Lord of the Flies jack says "I ought to be chief" (Golding
22). This shows that he thinks he is the only person who should be leader. When they talk about
the hunters he says "They could be an army" (Golding page 23). This sentence is by the one that
sets up jack's idea of his "hunters" his hunters start out as a group of boys then evolved into this
deadly group of savages that could barely be called human. In later pages jack is desired giving
his army newer weapon and upgrading them. Heinrich Himmler was the head of the Nazi SS, the
Nazi honor guard, and he was obsessed with building this army. "Himmler immediately began

chief of his hunter tribe roger became a second in command for the army. Himmler also led the
