We all know what Facebook is so I’m not going to spend much time on it.Be aware of what you’re saying…Pictures you’re posting…Places where you are “checking in”… and who you are friends with.Your future employer, your parents, your girlfriend’s mom… they are ALL going to look you up on Facebook.
I used to think of it as blogging for lazy people. Now that I’m tweeting all day, every day I realize you can’t be good at tweeting and be lazy. It’s a lot of work.
It’s also popular as a way of marketing a business because business owners can interact with people who are interested in their services.
Everything you are putting out there on social media, combined with who you are… it all creates a personal brand. Everyone turn to your neighbor and for about 30 seconds tell them what your personal brand is. What is YOU? Ready, go!Let’s share a few of them…
Ask yourself… what are your special skills? What are your values?
In every environment, from the workplace to the web, people make choices that affect their personal brand.
How you manage your personal brand will determine how others view you — and ultimately shape your career and your life.
Write down the answers to these questions…
A solid personal branding strategy will help you build your reputation and your network so that interesting opportunities come to you.
Let’s do a little tweeting! Everyone take out your phone, go to Twitter, and Tweet something about the session… what you’ve learned so far… use the hashtag #NSCSsm! I’ll have my interns back at the office choose what they thing is the best tweet and that person will win a gift card.
Start thinking of Facebook as a representation of you, professionally…get rid of the party photoslook at who you are friends withBe open…-use your real name, work, school, hobbiesYou never know what similar interests might spark a connection with a potential employer.
Don’t type in all caps!Don’t use a bazillion exclamation points!Don’t type in text speak!
Figure out how it works and connect with professional contacts throughout your college career. It will help you in the long run. If you have a work-study, internship or part-time job and have a good relationship with your supervisor, you may not want to be friends on Facebook… what better way to connect and stay in touch than LinkedIn?

I use a social media management tool called HootSuite. It allows me to post on multiple social media outlets all at once, follow conversations, topics, hashtags… it’s super customizable. Using Twitter.com, I feel, is a waste of time. To really get the most from Twitter, you need to use something like HootSuite or Tweet Deck.Pull up HootSuite for examples.
Questions? Anyone want to share their plan? This isn’t the end… you can contact me anytime if you have questions or need advice.
