‘Show Ways’

Quilts with secret meanings that are maps to
                 … freedom
“each generation passes on to the next the
belief that there is a road to a better place”
About the author …
Jacqueline Woodson

• Based on family history
• 7 generations girls & women
        Quilters/Artists/Freedom Fighters
• Wanted a ‘Show Way’ for her daughter
What were some of those roads to
           freedom?
When Soonie’s great-grandma was seven

She was sold from her family …
                     as a slave
Big Mama

            Made ‘Show Way” quilts
           helping slaves find freedom
Those quilts were very special,
  leading slaves to freedom
Underground railroad….
One generation after the next
continued with the ‘Show Way”
Soonie was born and her mom said,
“There’s a road, girl. There’s a road …”
The slaves were freed

 Still they worked very hard
Soonie sewed the quilts
selling them for money

and started her own family …
     …..
There was still a road yet to go …
Caroline & Ann had ‘Show Way’ patches
pinned inside their dresses that helped them
be less scared with their road
There’s a road, girl. There’s a road.
    We will always remember
