  1. 1. THE THIRD OF MAY, 1808 (1814) Francisco de Goya y Lucientes
  2. 2. Biography  Born 1746, 30th March in Fuendetodos, a village in northern Spain.  Died1828, 16th April in voluntary exile in France.
  3. 3. Influences  Apprentice to Jose Luzan at age 14.  The decorative Rococo style, which was very popular at the time.  Neoclassicism, which replaced Rococo in popularity.  He served as a commissioned artist for Royals and Spanish aristocrats.
  4. 4. Themes Explored in Goya’s Practice  Irrationality  Folly  Corruption  However, the images he produced in response to the war with France were much darker, both emotionally and visually, than anything he had previously explored.
  5. 5. The Third of May, 1808 (1814)  Oil on canvas (255cm x 345cm).  Depicting the executio n of Spanish rebels by French soldiers.
