4. Parts of computer

Hardware and Software

In order to work with the data fed into it, a computer needs both hardware and software.
Hardware is the physical parts of a computer that can be seen and touched. The most
important part of the hardware is the CPU (Central Processing Unit).

   1. Name five pieces of computer Hardware.

   5. Computer System Electrical Connections

1. Why is a monitor usually powered from the system unit ?

(a) A monitor needs only very little power to function.

(b) A monitor needs only half as much power as the system unit to function.

(c) A monitor needs a large amount of power to function.

(e) A monitor powered from the system unit can share the same power point as the system
unit.

2. Why is it not advisable to connect a system unit together with a few peripherals to a
single wall socket ?

(a) It can cause electrical hazards.

(b) Each peripheral will draw less power.

(c) Only the system unit will work but not the peripherals.

(d) Neither the system unit nor the peripheral will work.

3. Match the following items.

(a) Electrical wire * Starting the system

(b) Booting * Sockets for I/O units and power supply

(c) Back panel * Cooling the system unit

(d) Fan * Cable

4. Briefly describe the normal procedure of starting a computer system.

5. Computers sometimes need to be restarted when errors occur. This happens when a
computer ‘hangs’, that is, when it stops processing. Do you know the keys that will restart
the computer without turning off the power ? Locate these keys on the keyboard.
