Overview
2009 – What you have now:
ESPN running six hard placement :60 promotional endorsements by Shaun Dodge per month and 30 rotators
running 5a – 12m ten days a month for $2,703 NET PLUS $500 talent fee to Shaun Dodge.
The good: Endorsements tend to work for your type of business, they are easier to track and the :60 spot Shaun
did for you sounds good. Your :30 spot sounds great.
The bad: Ten days of rotators and Shaun talking about Knockouts six times a month isn’t reaching enough of your
target customers. The budget you have won’t go far in a market the size of DFW.
What you need: Hard placement to increase your reach, more spots over more days in the month to increase
frequency, and a music station to reach more of your target demographic on the weekend. In addition, the Cowboy
football season and the events surrounding that and the new stadium present a good opportunity for Knockouts
promotion the last quarter of 2009 into January of 2010.
2009 Cowboy football season opportunities:
Lowest investment: $2,125 Net with The Fan/KRLD-FM/105.3 gets you 20 hard placement spots one week a month.
I can renegotiate this if you want more exposure and if you want to increase the investment. With an approval process
for being part of a Cowboy promotion, Knockouts will be eligible to participate in The Fan’s Cowboys Watching Parties
and Pre-game Show for the 2009 season held Sundays at The Gaylord Texas in Grapevine.
ESPN has some promotions for investments of $5,000 and $6,000 respectively. I believe you have received both of
those PPT presentations. My thoughts are that the ROI is not sufficient for Knockouts.
2010 Caveats:
The Ticket has a loyal audience and is ranked #1 in the market. However, your budget will not go far enough to gain
enough frequency at their rates, and their station range is incredibly low.
KRLD/The Fan/ 105.3 can give you hard placement spots with excellent frequency, but even though they are the
Cowboy flagship station, in 2010 they still can’t give you the reach and coverage you need. Endorsements are hard
to come by on The Fan as well.
Rotators are the only way to flesh out your buy with the budget you have.
Rotators give you the frequency you need, but hard placement dayparts give you better reach and are easier to
track as long as you keep an eagle eye on your traffic compared to your weekly and monthly radio campaign
schedule.
To make sure you are getting your money’s worth, check your invoice every month from the stations. It will give you
the official station log of when your spots ran within 15 minutes. This is how you can tell if your rotators are running
at a decent time and if your hard placement spots are running in the correct time frame. Should you decide to hire
Build Texas Media as your agency, we will track with the station logs and require compensation from the stations
that don’t run according to the buy. Compensation means extra spots at no charge.

Recommendations
2010 Recommendations:
Stick with ESPN. You get the advantage of :60 live endorsements, a :60 spot recorded by Shaun himself,
and a schedule I designed and ESPN can live with. You get better reach with coverage for every weekday
of the month instead of just ten days a month. The best part is the price is almost exactly the same
including Shaun’s talent fee. $2,805 Net plus $500
2009: Net Reach with current ESPN schedule each month – 129,900
2010 Schedule: Net Reach – 176,200
2009: Monthly frequency – 1.9
2010 Schedule: Monthly frequency – 1.9
2009: Cumulative audience – 260,300
2010 Schedule: Cumulative audience – 360,400
KSCS/Country/96.3 will give you a rate that allows you to dominate a daypart every Saturday of the
month from 6a-3p. This is hard placement when KSCS ranks #2 and #5 in the market for men 25-54. This
will reach men who haven’t heard your commercials before. This fills in the gap of coverage you need for
weekends, and it gives you coverage in a daypart long before your stores close on Saturdays with a boost
for your stores that are open on Sunday. The rate is $85 Net. You get 3 :30 spots running 6a-3p every
Saturday for $1,020 every four weeks.
KPLX/Country/The Wolf 99.5 will come close to matching the KSCS rate with an offer of $93.50 Net per
:30 spot with the same schedule if you sign off to run it the first quarter of 2010 by this coming Monday,
October 5th. Otherwise the rate goes up to $110.50 Net, and my rep wasn’t sure how long she could hold
that rate. The Saturday daypart with KSCS will get you almost the exact same exposure without being
rushed to sign off.
The numbers:
ESPN: Total Net to Station each 4-week schedule - $3,305
KSCS: Total Net to Station each 4-week schedule - $1,020
Grand Total: $4,325
Build Texas Media monthly fee: $500
Total Annual Radio budget covering 48 weeks of radio in 2010: $57,900
