• A levee is a naturally
occurring ridge at the
banks of a river.
• It is like a raised river
bank above the level of
the floodplain.
3. Formation of a levee
• When a flood occurs, the river
bursts its banks.
• The flood leaves behind sediment
(thickest at channel edges, thin and
fine on the outer part of the
floodplain outside the channel)
• This sediment raises the level of the
banks above the floodplain.
• If more flooding occurs then the
levees keep getting higher.
