Levees

Levees
• A levee is a naturally
  occurring ridge at the
  banks of a river.
• It is like a raised river
  bank above the level of
  the floodplain.
Formation of a levee
          • When a flood occurs, the river
              bursts its banks.
          • The flood leaves behind sediment
(thickest at channel edges, thin and
fine on the outer part of the
              floodplain outside the channel)
          • This sediment raises the level of the
              banks above the floodplain.
          • If more flooding occurs then the
              levees keep getting higher.
