2. Formal Grammar For A Good Writer
Nicholas Patterson
ENC 1102
Professor Tarkan–Blanco
29 March, 2016
Prompt: Argue whether the formal instruction of grammar in school is helpful and enlightening for
someone who wants to become a good writer.
Formal Grammar instruction is necessary to become a good writer It is fairly easy to determine a
person's educational background based on a single conversation; whether through written messages
or a verbal conversation, word choice and grammar are very apparent. Grammar in the formal
writing style is needed to ensure that writing is flowing and understandable. Without it a writer will
not be respected in the writing world. American English is very complex with various tenses and
many different grammatical rules that can be very hard to learn and master. However rules are very
important in order to use the language effectively. Even though some argue that it can be a waste of
time, formal grammar instruction is an essential component to becoming a good writer because
students themselves want to improve their grammar, and without proper usage, written works can
become confusing. Grammar has been taught in English since the sixteenth century, with the
grammar school, "Which focused on academic studies, with the assumption that many of their pupils
would go on to higher education" (Richardson). While these schools didn 't educate the pupils only
in grammar, this idea of grammar school for children who were expected to have more intellectual
success than those that went

Once upon a time, their was a kid who did not use spell check. The kid said she used spell checker,
but she was just too lazy to lazy to try. She often forgot to. The girl never used the Thesaurus
either. Her parents were made at the teacher becuz their precious baby did not have a good grade.
This was a sad situation that shouldn't be a problem. The reason it shouldn't no t be a problem is
because it only takes a minute for a kid to check her work with spell checker and grammar check as
well. Specially since the sweat girl will be sure to get a better grade then if she keeps on being too
lazy to "check" her

4. Importance of Grammar Essay
A.Introduction
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching.
Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made.
Batstone (1994) states that "language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without
the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified" (p. 4). More vividly, Wang
(2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor
to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is
to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its
own significance as it helps students...show more content...
In the third part, three pedagogical implications will be presented. In addition, a grammar activity
and its theoretical rationale will be respectively reported in the fourth and fifth part before the final
conclusion is displayed.
B.Evaluation of Miss Wong's Teaching Approach
B(1). Teaching philosophy
It is teachers' beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction
(William & Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers' beliefs about learners:
resisters, receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers.
Unlike the first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners' active
involvement (as cited in William & Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong's teaching approach, a PPP model
(i.e., Presentation, Practice and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target
grammatical structure of passive voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher's answer
checking. However, it seems the final production step is omitted, resulting in students' lacking
opportunities to apply the knowledge into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss
Wong tends to regard her students as receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits.
What the instruction concerns is whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or
vice verse from a structural level, which is a typical example of a

6. Explain My Expectation Of English 1101
Of the many expectations I have of English 1101, three are very important to me: improving my
vocabulary, communication skills, and the ability to enhance my writing skills. During college the
most fundamental class will be English. English will help me with all subjects in my curriculum, by
building better communication skills, and will help with me with everyday life. In today's world of
increased communications, particularly of a digital nature, writing skills are an important aspect of
expression on a personal, professional and educational level. People send written communications
more frequently and quickly than ever in the form of text messages, emails and social media updates.
One important expectation I have is improving my vocabulary. The way you speak is just as
important as your appearance. An improved vocabulary means you sound intelligent, you sound
confident in your...show more content...
When enhancing my writing skills , this will also help improve my poor grammar and spelling.
Having good writing skills will help you succeed in your academics and professional career. Better
writing skills communicate intelligence, professionalism, and competency. The inability to write
clearly and effectively communicate through the written word significantly impacts your ability to
land a new job or promotion. Enhancing my writing skills will allow me to advance further along in
my career.
The most important expectation I have of a college–level English course is developing excellent
communication skills. Having excellent communication skills means I will be able to comprehend
more things adequately. Everything you do in the life results in a from communication. Reading,
writing, speaking and listening are forms of communication that we use everyday. These skills are
very important when communicating in careers where peoples lives could be on the line, money is
involved, or even when good customer service is

7. Bryant Stratton APA Report
I most recently submitted an assignment with formatting and grammatical errors. The formatting
errors can be corrected by carefully reviewing the Bryant Stratton APA guide. The grammatical
errors can be avoided by re–reading and using spell checker to make sure words are spelled
correctly. The spell checker was use, and the paper was submitted electronically, so text could be
changed and re–submitted. When the text was changed I forgot to spell check; therefore this
created an error in the paper. It is important not to rely on spell checker, for sometimes it disagrees
with the spelling of a word and will consider that word to in– correct. For example, each time I type
Mariann the spell checker underlines my name as an error. Then the

8. Checker Errors
The Checkers fail to notice many grammar and spelling errors. The checkers only identified the
words Japanese, Kokugo, and Nihingo as spelling errors. The checkers also identified the "a" in
"The Japanse have a almost mystical...", and "they " as grammar error. They gave a correct
suggestion for fixing the "Japanse" into Japanese. The checkers identified the proper nouns not being
capitalized. Words like kokugo and nihingo should have been capitalized. However, even after
capitalizing the word the spelling checker still says it's wrong. The grammatical suggestion that the
checker gives is correct for the "a" which is "an". However, the suggestion for the "they" is wrong.
The word " leaning" is wrong because it should be "learning". Moreover,

9. Grammar Checkers
Don't rely entirely on spelling and grammar checkers. These can be useful tools but they are far
from foolproof. Spell checkers have a limited dictionary, so some words that show up as
misspelled may really just not be in their memory. In addition, spell checkers will not catch
misspellings that form another valid word. For example, if you type "your" instead of "you're,"
"to" instead of "too," or "there" instead of "their," the spell checker won't catch the error.
Grammar checkers can be even more problematic. These programs work with a limited number of
rules, so they can't identify every error and often make mistakes. They also fail to give thorough
explanations to help you understand why a sentence should be revised. You may want to use a
grammar checker to help you identify potential run–on sentences or too frequent use of the passive
voice, but you need to be able to evaluate the feedback it provides.

You're not just looking for errors that you recognize; you're also learning to recognize and correct
new errors. This is where handbooks and dictionaries come in. Keep the ones you find helpful close
at hand as you proofread.
Ignorance may be bliss, but it won't make you a better proofreader. You'll often find things that
don't seem quite right to you, but you may not be quite sure what's wrong either. A word looks like
it might be misspelled, but the spell checker didn't catch it. You think you need a comma between
two words, but you're not sure why. Should you use "that" instead of "which"? If you're not sure
about something, look it up?
The proofreading process becomes more efficient as you develop and practice a systematic strategy.
You'll learn to identify the specific areas of your ownwriting that need careful attention, and
knowing that you have a sound method for finding errors will help you to focus more on developing
your ideas while you are drafting the

12. Essay On English Grammar
English grammar is an extensive and complicated set of rules that govern how we speak and write
using the English language. Grammar has evolved over many centuries, and the rules change from
time to time. Teaching grammar plays a central role in every ESL / EFL teacher's classroom. The
topics cover a range from letters and sounds, parts of speech, vocabulary and stories to dialogue and
conversation, listening comprehension, reading comprehension and written composition. English
language and its usage have become extremely emotive issues in recent years... 'An Introduction to
English Grammar' is an invaluable guide to the study of English language in an accessible format.
Generally the authors begin with an introduction chapter on the nature of grammar and on the
varieties of English and move on to provide an outline description of English grammar. It is to be
understood that "Recognizing the goal of the grammar course is to improve students' grasp of
English grammar, and not to make students into linguists. Many authors have written streamlined,

In my remarks I hope to dispel some of the misunderstandings that promote its continuing existence.
But, before viewing the role that grammar has played in the history of second language teaching,
let's first explore the nature of grammar. Linguists define grammar as a set of components: phonetics
,the production and perception of sounds, phonology ,how sounds are combined, morphology ,the
study of forms, or how elements are combined to create words, syntax ,how words are strung
together into sentences, and semantics or meaning. Because all languages are characterized by these
components, by definition, language does not exist without

14. Grammar, Language, And English Language Essay
Grammar is the system of a language that is needed for a better communication. People sometimes
describe grammar as the set of rules of an English language, but in fact no language has rules. If we
think that it is all about rules, there should be someone who created the rules so that other people
can use, learn or practise it. Whereas but languages did not start like that. Languages started by
people making sounds which evolved into words, phrases and sentences. No commonly–spoken
language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call "grammar" is simply a
reflection of a language at a particular time. When we question ourselves that do we need to learn
grammar to learn or acquire a language, the answer is no. It is not necessary to learn grammar and
acquire a language but we need to learn the grammar in order for a serious learning of a foreign
language or English language. Grammar can help you to learn a language more quickly and more

16. Reflection Paper On Grammar
Flash Backs Grammar. A confusing concept to my own mind while walking into a new class, yet
an intriguing topic to learn throughout a course. In the beginning of the semester, I worried a lot
about my success in this course because my own grammar, rhetoric, and style of writing needs
work. I knew this class was going to put my prior knowledge to the test, but I was beyond ready
for the challenge. As I continue throughout the course I become more aware of the grammar in
writings and the purpose that grammar serves in order to successfully display the message.
Between a poet's decision to capitalize an improper noun, or an author choosing to use an ellipses
rather than just ending showcases the use of grammar and what it can tell the audience about the
written work. Before this semester, I would have told you that I did not feel very confident with the
usage of grammar; I may have had past experience with writing and attempting to use grammar, but
the task still overwhelms and troubles me. Definitions. Definitions of words change and evolve
throughout time, and the same goes for grammar and its definition. To come into a classroom that
revolves around instructing and learning grammar and its process, I had no idea how exactly I
would fit in with my classmates. The teacher asked us what we thought grammar was; originally I
thought the definition of grammar was the proper way to include symbols for writing like commas
and the use of different sentence structures in a
