Happy learning is an outcome of positive psychology based education and social pedagogy Lalit Kishore The precept of 'Happy Learning' which is also supported by UNESCO (see inset picture) and UNICEF is based on positive psychological foundation of education. As an applied soft science, positive psychology focuses on mental wellbeing and happiness through caring social environment of the classroom, relationship-based institutional work culture, creation of learning designs and incorporating classroom practices that lead to creative thinking. The basic assumption in happy learning is that learning is an innate potential, when accomplished through caring, fostering and nurturing processes, it imparts happiness or joy of learning. It more often leads to self-motivation, that is, inner urge to learn as a flow or by making the learner and the learning getting unified. Integrating positive psychology into institutional set-up and classroom organization as well as instructional processes is known as positive education. In positive education, the management and development of innate learning potential is centred on emotional wellbeing of staff and students to create happiness in learning process. In other words, happy education is a combination of positive psychology, social pedagogy and instructional pedagogy that leads to joy of learning and makes students autonomous learners. There are five things worth knowing about positive education that induces happy learning presented herein as an ABC verse. A: Assurance that the institution, educators and other functionaries are for students and their wellbeing and success in learning B: Benign pro-social learning environment with emphasis on nurturing relationships between students and staff C: Creating challenges for optimistic and mindful engagement with learning tasks D: Draw out the best in students through differentiated learning and emotional well being E: Emphasis on individual strengths and personal motivation to promote success learning.
