3. With 61 pool villas set amidst a sculpted
tropical lagoon on an expansive
30-hectare estate, the resort is designed
as an exclusive oceanfront hideaway. The
resort comes with a Banyan Tree Spa and
Banyan Tree’s first hydrothermal complex
in Asia. The development features eight
spa pavilions, which spans across an area
of 5,000 square metres, an 800-square
metre Hydrothermal Experience as well as
extensive fitness and wellness facilities.
Signature dining outlets, and extensive
conference facilities make Banyan Tree

Each Presidential Villa comprises two
king-sized bedrooms and four adjacent
bedrooms with twin beds, with every
amenity including expansive reception
room, a dining room, family room, theatre,
games room, private spa suite and gym,
as well as the main swimming pool,
measuring over 300 square metres, with
an outdoor sunken pavilion and heated
jet-pool.
Both Presidential Villa Complexes benefit
from an unparalleled level of security
features including perimeter fences,
whereby they can be closed off and
treated as singular, or indeed dual entities,
as the two complexes can be integrated
seamlessly with the resort.
Designed entirely by Architrave Design
and Planning, the in-house architectural
division of Banyan Tree, the villas are
linked together by a “river system”, where
the villa pools’ infinity edge overlooks the
external lagoon, which winds through the
entire resort, much like the many rivers and
bays found in Sanya.
The spacious pool villas are crowned with
red clay-tiled roofs and black slate walls,
combining intricate Chinese accents with a
distinctive tropical minimalism.
China has a little of everything for
everyone, from rugged mountains, to
bustling metropolises. Tucked away, on its
southern-most tip, is a gem of an island
called Hainan – or sometimes dubbed
the Oriental Hawaii. At its coordinates of
20 degrees north of the equator, Hainan
island is a prized latitudal combination
of sunny beaches, coral reefs, balmy
climate and hilly landscape, which is not
experienced anywhere else in China. This
is the setting for tropical Banyan Tree
Sanya, worlds apart yet just one hour’s
flight from Hong Kong.
This erstwhile little-known beach mecca
has been in the international spotlight
in recent years for hosting world-class
events such as the Miss World pageants.
It is little wonder that Sanya has been the
choice venue for such high profile events.
Vast stretches of scenic coastlines are

On 01 August 2008, Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts
commenced services of its inaugural global toll free
lines, increasing the portfolio of communications and
reservations options available to its growing global
audience. Administered by Trust International, 18 toll
free lines across 17 countries will provide hotel enquiry
and booking services for Banyan Tree and Angsana,
over strategic key regions including Asia Pacific, Europe,
Middle East and the United States.
To celebrate the launch of the toll free lines and reaffirm
its commitment to the environment, the Group will plant
a tree for every 10 phone bookings received through the
international numbers. The trees will be planted in the
heritage Daintree Rainforest, Cairns in partnership with
the Australian Rainforest Foundation.
At Your Fingertips
Banyan Tree’s new toll free lines will be a component to
build and enhance customer relationships in the localised
regions where it is available. Callers will be able to speak
to a Banyan Tree or Angsana representative in their own
time zone, 24 hours a day. This complements existing
booking channels including website and travel agent
resources.
This move follows Banyan Tree Group’s milestone
introduction of its independent GDS “BY” code on 27
September 2007. The Group is entering a new stage
of global expansion with close to 50 hotels and resorts
opening over the next three years in diverse locations
such as Mexico, Greece and Ras Al Khaimah.
The launch of the international toll free lines in tandem
with the independent GDS code will streamline the
booking process for members of the public as well
as travel agents.
From villa bedrooms, guests can step into
the cursive indigo swimming pools, lounge
under the tall palm trees, or enjoy the
oversized bathtubs sunken amidst lotus
ponds. Each villa is enclosed in a private
courtyard and guests will enjoy bright airy
vistas thanks to the use of glass.
Take a day trip to one of the largest
cultural tourist attractions of its kind in
China, the colourful Nanshan Buddhist
Cultural Zone located just 40 kilometres
west of Sanya City. There are three
separate parks within Nanshan: Nanshan
Buddhism Culture Park is a window on
China’s traditional Buddhism culture; the
Felicity and Longevity Culture Park reflects
an atmosphere of peace, harmony and
long life; and the Nanshan Cultural Park
highlights China’s diverse social customs.
The key feature of the zone is the
three-faced statue of Guan Yin Buddha,
standing out in the South China Sea, on a
man-made island.
Located about 20 km west of Sanya City
and rising over the beach is an ancient
rock formation inscribed with Chinese
characters meaning “The Edge of the Sky”
written by Chengzhe, the chief magistrate
of Yazhou Prefecture in the Qing Dynasty.
This rock is so famous that it is even
featured in the back of China’s 2 RMB
bank note. During the Tang Dynasty, which
landed between 618 - 907 AD, emperors
used to banish rebel officers to Sanya,
which became known as the “End of the
Earth” due to its remoteness in relation to
the nation’s capital.
Another scenic spot is the Lover’s Hill in
Sanya Luhuitou Park. Opened in 1989, the
park is located in the Luhuitou Peninsula
southwest of Sanya and covers almost
82 hectares with the highest elevation
reaching a height of 181 metres. The
park is marked by a large stone sculpture
depicting a deer with its head turned
around. A romantic folktale lies behind how
the park got its name and it is rumoured
that couples who have a picture taken with
the sculpture will be blessed. The hilltop
park is noted for being an excellent place
to get a bird’s eye view of the sea and
downtown Sanya, as well as to savour the
sun rising and setting over the city.

The modern world has barely touched
the idyllic island of Seychelles, with
its charming Victorian buildings and
meandering roads and bays. Yet it has
never lacked creature comforts, ensuring
that starry-eyed visitors have plenty to
broadcast when they return to their own
shores. Now, they will have even more
reasons to linger.
Banyan Tree Seychelles, one of
Seychelles’ most luxurious hideaways
and the only all-villa private pool resort on
Mahé main island, has launched just six of
the Two-Bedroom DoublePool Beachfront
Villas. Each of these feature two private
pools, two open-air dining areas, a jet-pool,
two sprawling master bedrooms, as well
as a 24-hour in-villa host. Spanning over
800 square metres each and set amidst
beautifully manicured gardens, these
exclusive villas are located within 10 steps
from the beach and boast a dedicated

dining Creole restaurant, Chez Lamar,
which offers gastronomic Creole delights
inspired by Seychellois’ vibrant culture.
Chez Lamar, which means “at the
wetlands” in Creole is built on the terrace
of a beautiful colonial style house and is
ideally situated overlooking the resort’s
distinctive protected wetlands area.
At Chez Lamar, guests dine on authentic,
traditional Seychellois dishes presented in
cutting edge, modern styles. The food is
prepared true to Creole traditions passed
from generation to generation, to produce
the original tastes and flavors that reflect
Seychelles and Creole culture.
An ideal degustation menu is prepared
monthly, to introduce guests to six to ten
dishes each time, comprising mainly local
produce with an emphasis on authenticity
of Creole cooking style. Personalised
Creole cooking classes are also available
for the culinary-minded guest. A jaunt to
the local market in Victoria for ingredients
is followed by a menu-planning session,
where the guests experience what it is
like to be a chef through choosing their
dishes as well as preparing it from scratch.
The focus is on providing a first-hand
experience to the guest on what it feels like
behind the kitchen counter. Recipes are
available in French, German and English.

With the World Heritage listed Daintree-
Cape Tribulation Rainforest just minutes
away, and the added proximity of the
legendary Great Barrier Reef, it is little
wonder that Palm Cove has been dubbed
one of the premier beach and wedding
destinations in Australia. Its beaches
draw a faithful following of artists and
photographers attracted by its small town
charm, blending laid-back relaxation
with chic sophistication.
The abundance of Melaleuca trees
endemic to the region, a sprinkling of
islands on the horizon and a romantic
jetty, makes this “Spa Capital of Australia”
ideally placed to explore the attractions of
Far North Queensland.
Amongst those attractions, is the
outstanding and oft-awarded Angsana

In the heart of Palm Cove, Angsana Great Barrier Reef remakes itself
for nature lovers
Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel, the former residence of
a prince and now award-winning property affiliated to the
Angsana Hotels and Resorts group, launched an evocative
photography exhibition entitled “Lost & Found” by Vientiane-
born photographer Ratsamy Viphakone-Szafran in November
2007.
Ms Viphakone-Szafran, more affectionately known as Mimi
to her associates, has loaned her deeply-moving oeuvre of
photographs to Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel indefinitely,
after its first show in 2006 at T’Shop Lai Gallery in Vientiane.
Ms Viphakone-Szafran was born in Vientiane to a diplomatic
family, in the-then Kingdom of Laos. Having left the country
in 1975, she returned in 1995 to reconnect to her birthplace
through photographic mementos. Mimi was already a
budding photographer during her teenage years, capturing
local sights and scenes with her trusty Rolleiflex which was a
gift from her father. Unfortunately, these portraits and scenes
of those bygone days in Laos have since been lost.
“Lost and Found” tells of Mimi’s emotional journey during her
homecoming years. The pictures encapsulate her personal
process of reclaiming lost images, sorting out the past
from the present, essentially spinning tales of exile and re-
appropriation.
Now living in Paris, Mimi flew down especially to Luang
Prabang to grace the opening of the exhibition. Many of her
friends, including the expatriate community and a handful of
appreciative hotel guests, were present to celebrate and lend
their show of support that evening. The photographs were
artfully displayed along the walkway leading to the Garden
Wing of the hotel.
Most significantly, Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel, in
association with the artist, will earmark a portion of the
proceeds from the sales of the photographs, for an ongoing
effort to assist needy Laotian children in furthering their
education and obtaining clothing. The hotel’s success in
displaying meaningful, cultural artwork has prompted it to
look for more such collaborations, which will favourably
increase and deepen guests’ exposure and appreciation of
the rich local culture.

Pacific), and a similar accolade: Best

In line with the resort’s environmentally
progressive philosophies, Angsana
Great Barrier Reef has embarked on
the groupwide Greening Communities
Programme, with the aim of planting 2,000
trees annually over the next ten years. In
partnership with the Australian Rainforest
Foundation, the resort has sponsored and
planted close to 2,000 trees in the World
Heritage Daintree Rainforest to date.
So set out to conquer one of the Seven
Natural Wonders of the World this

from ancient India which successfully survived 5,000
years, Ayurveda is synonymous with herbal medicine.
Celebrities such as Madonna purportedly gave birth
using Ayurvedic techniques, while Richard Gere, Sting,
Donna Karan, and many more are followers of its

The latest addition to the CSR laboratory family, Banyan Tree
Bintan Conservation Lab, won the 2008 PATA Gold Award in the
Ecotourism Project category. The Pacific Asia Travel Association
(PATA) Gold Awards is an annual event that recognises exceptional
achievements in various hospitality categories and seeks to
highlight the best Asia Pacific’s travel industry has to offer.
Since the founding of Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts, Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) has played a major role enabling
the Group to be agents of social and economic development in
developing countries where they have a presence.
Indonesia is recognised as one of the planet’s most important
biodiversity hotspots. Its seas harbour the most diverse and resilient
coral reefs ecosystem in the world, and it is also home to one the
world’s largest tropical rainforest areas. Seventeen percent of the
world’s coral reef area is located in this country, while 17% of the
world bird species can be found here. However, much of these
important natural resources and ecosystems are under great threat.
Destructive and overly-exploitative practices have contributed to the
rapid degradation of Indonesia’s natural resources.
The Banyan Tree Bintan Conservation Lab was conceptualised to
contribute to the on-going conservation effort nationwide, particularly
in Bintan island, to reverse the trend of reduced biodiversity because
of unsustainable practices and habitat destruction. The Conservation
Lab sets out to collaborate with key conservation groups, zoos,
universities and other key stakeholder groups in the area to protect
key conservation targets (i.e. ecosystems and species under highest
threat or whose existence is believed to be in danger) while also
working alongside local communities and authorities to develop and
promote alternative livelihood programs that will ease the pressure
on precious natural resources.
The Bintan Conservation Lab is directed by a dedicated Environment
Naturalist based on site, assisted by two local wildlife rangers. The
team facilitates the development of conservation programmes as
well as enhances community development and public health of
surrounding local villages.
Since April 2007, the Bintan Conservation Lab has collaborated
on studies with international and regional experts in their field.
These include a reptile and amphibian survey, a coral survey, a
bird and butterflies survey, as well as a study on the endangered
Asian Box Turtle.
As a result of the surveys and partnerships, experts have
discovered over 60 species of birds in the resort area, of which
15 are listed as protected species; while approximately 40
species of reptiles and amphibians were identified within Banyan
Tree and Angsana Bintan, and surrounding area, including two
freshwater turtle species listed as vulnerable and endangered by
the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural
Resources (IUCN). Research is ongoing, and further projects and
partnerships are being developed to enhance the ability of the
resorts to protect and promote the local ecology.
In a display of Banyan Tree Bintan Conservation Lab’s efforts
to preserve the natural habitat of its surroundings, the resort
celebrated its very first birth of native hawksbill turtles. Hawksbill
turtles are one of two of the world’s surviving marine turtle species
that live around Bintan island. Although these turtles lay hundreds

of eggs each nesting season, only 1%
survive until adulthood. In collaboration
with partner resorts, the Banyan Tree
Bintan Conservation Lab team along with
staff at the resort rescued the eggs and
relocated them to a safer nesting site.
Upon hatching, the baby turtles were
carefully brought back to the same beach
they were found in and released to begin
their journey into the open waters.
Banyan Tree Bintan is built on a site
remarkable for being a lush first-growth
rainforest nestled along the shoreline – a
rare occurrence in Southeast Asia where
most coastal lands are inhabited and
planted with coconut trees. Interestingly
too, many of the trees on the site are from
50 to 100 years old and some of these
trees like Malayan Fern Palm and Crinum
Lily are rare in other parts of Asia.
In Bintan, the Banyan Tree architectural
team, Architrave, made it a point to work
with the site’s imposing terrain and its
virgin jungle while consciously minimising
the ‘taming’ of this majestic wilderness.
Each of Banyan Tree Bintan’s 61 villas was
meticulously slotted under the canopy of
the jungle. To avoid cutting into the steep
slopes of the hills, and to prevent soil
erosion, the villas were built on platforms
and supported by columns.
To preserve Bintan’s dramatic terrain,
landscaping was kept to a minimum, and
most boulders were left where they were. In
fact, if one were to visit the resort today, you
will see that a spectacular swimming pool
within the resort was carved out of rock.

effort, the Banyan Tree
Vabbinfaru Marine Lab
provides a strong link
between the private
sector tourism industry
and the social sector and
environmental conservation community.
Launched in December 2003 on the island resort of
Vabbinfaru, the Lab represents years of hard work and
dedication to local environmental conservation and
community issues. It provides the umbrella for coordinating
extensive conservation work conducted by associates,
guests and scientists while also providing a centre for
raising environmental awareness within the communities in
the Maldives.
Professor Harrison is one of the many leading scientists
invited to the Maldives Marine Lab in its efforts to further
understand and safeguard the diversity of the Maldivian
reefs and ocean. He works closely with the Lab’s renowned
Director of Conservation, Abdul Azeez Abdul Hakeem, in
training the Marine Lab associates, interacting with resort
guests, giving presentations to the Ministry of Fisheries,
and setting up long term programmes to collect raw data
for future scientific research purposes.
BANYAN TREE VABBINFARU MARINE LAB
In 2007, a second research facility, the Banyan Tree
Velavaru Marine Lab was established on the island of
Velavaru in the South Nilandhe Atoll. The Marine Lab aims
to further understand and safeguard the incredible diversity
of the Maldivian reefs and ocean, at the same time actively
encouraging guests to get involved in the discovery,
protection and conservation of local marine wildlife
and corals.
Coral reefs are the heart of Velavaru island, geologically
and biologically. They support 25% of all marine life
and protect the coasts from wave erosion. Yet, they are
poorly understood. The Lab has undertaken a variety of
research projects regarding various aspects of reef ecology
and inhabitant species, in an effort to expand existing
knowledge of the ecosystem of the South Nilandhe Atoll.
The Marine Lab will also focus on protecting sea turtles,
a keystone species particularly vulnerable to a wide
range of destructive human activities. Angsana Velavaru
is a known turtle-nesting site, home to two critically
endangered species – the Hawksbill and Green Sea
Turtles. Conservation of nesting sites is not only vital to the
continued survival of both species; it ensures that people
in the future will be able to share in the delight of these
creatures just as many guests of Angsana Velavaru, young
and old, have.

unfolding tale of Baan Unrak, a haven
for needy children and their mothers in
Thailand, who are weaving their way into
a secure future with the help of Banyan
Tree Gallery.
A signature feature of every Banyan Tree
and Angsana resort, Banyan Tree Gallery
and Angsana Gallery play an important
role in showcasing cottage crafts of
local artisans while sustaining their
livelihoods and craft skills through gainful
employment. This core belief is the driving
motivation behind the product lines of the
Gallery.
Guests at Banyan Tree Lijiang and Banyan
Tree Ringha, both in the mountainous
Yunnan province of China, would have
noticed a recent range of exquisite winter
apparel appearing on the shelves of the
Banyan Tree Galleries located on their
premises. Warding off cool weather chills,
items such as chenille jackets, hats and
scarves are delicately hand-woven and
inspired by a fusion of Thai, Burmese,
Karen and Mon tribal designs, uniquely
tailored in line with Banyan Tree Gallery’s
mandate to be a socially responsible
tourism retailer.
These thick woven garments in the Gallery
can trace their origins to a province called
Kanchanaburi at the distant west border
of Thailand. In the remote Sangkhla
Buri district within Kanchanaburi lies a
dedicated home, called Baan Unrak, to
house destitute children and abandoned
women. Located near the Thai-Burmese
border, Sangkhla Buri is home to a large
population of Burmese immigrants, Karen
and Mon hill tribes, many of whom are
stateless and poverty-stricken.
Baan Unrak (“House of Joy”) Children’s
Home was founded in 1991 by Didi
Devamala, an Italian volunteer from the
Neo Humanist Foundation, to provide
shelter, education and emotional support
to the needy children and mothers in
the community. Baan Unrak grew from
a home of initially two to more than 150
children today. The primary mission of
Baan Unrak is to support them through
means of offering an environment
conducive for living and education, and
to extend temporary food and medical
assistance to those in extreme needs.
In 2005, Baan Unrak also established a
school to provide proper kindergarten
and primary education, which was lacking
in the Sangkhla Buri community. Due to
rapid enrolment after the opening of the
school, Baan Unrak faced challenges in
accommodating all children with limited
facilities. Towards the end of 2005,
Banyan Tree Bangkok
extended its support to
fund the construction
costs for three

For the creative minds behind Banyan Tree Gallery, their research
turned to the endangered species that live in earth’s most
beautiful but disappearing habitats. Pandas, elephants, sharks,
gazelles, sea turtles and manta rays are some of the animals
that you’ll find depicted across a world map, in the new Save
The World collection aimed at raising global environmental
conservation.
As part of the interconnected circle of life, our responsible
actions can lead to saving the world, and in turn, saving
ourselves. But where do we start?
Here’s one way through Save The World at Banyan Tree
Gallery. Pick up visor caps and casual cotton T-shirts for men,
women and children. Handy shopping bags, made of natural
preservative-free cotton, were also developed to encourage
customers to recycle and reuse, as well as to reduce the use of
plastic bags.
Whenever possible, Banyan Tree Gallery adopts eco-friendly and
recycled materials for its merchandise, and is dedicated towards
continuous innovations in developing unique collections to
promote increased green awareness. To commemorate Earth Day
on 22 April 2008, the responsible retailer contributed a portion
of its sales revenue between April to June 2008 to the Green
Imperative Fund (GIF).
The GIF was established in 2002 to expand and formalise
Banyan Tree’s ongoing environmental conservation and
community development efforts, and operates throughout
Banyan Tree properties. The GIF provides financial support to
worthy environmental initiatives and community-based projects,
such as saving endangered marine turtles in the Indian Ocean
and Andaman Sea, regenerating coral reefs in the Maldives,
preserving rainforests and wildlife in Bintan and protecting the
wetlands in Seychelles.

for single mothers to sustain livelihoods
of themselves and their children. When
impoverished mothers fail to find any
means to support their children, they
abandon them or turn to prostitution.
With effect, a traditional weaving and
sewing center was established in 1995
within Baan Unrak to engage and
develop weaving skills of women through
sustainable employment and training.
Currently, the weaving center employs over
20 women weavers, sewers, and trainers.
The products of the weaving center are
mainly purchased by visitors to Sangkhla
Buri and Baan Unrak. This presented an
inspirational opportunity for the Gallery
to reach out to the local community by
providing employment to the women
of Baan Unrak, through engaging their
weaving and sewing skills, and bringing
these products to a global audience.
Baan Unrak believes that it is important to
solve community problems from its root
causes, by helping to keep families intact
through providing sustainable employment
to women. In Didi Devamala’s words,
“Parental love will offer the best condition
and environment for children to grow up.”
Achieving self-sufficiency through fruitful
employment at the weaving centre, many
residents of Baan Unrak have successfully
moved out and set up their own homes.
Through this first weaving project, the
Gallery has fulfilled its retail objectives
and Corporate Social Responsibility
aims. Looking forward, the Gallery is
developing another range of products with
Baan Unrak, bearing hope that additional
projects for the weaving center will
reinforce the Gallery’s solid commitment
towards supporting indigenous artistry and
the livelihood of local communities.

11. Laguna Resorts & Hotels Public Company
Limited, has earned a reputation as a
responsible developer whose interests
combine hotels and real estate with an
emphasis on quality and environmental
protection. In addition to its core hotel
business at Laguna Phuket, the company
has successfully diversified into overseas
properties, vacation ownerships, corporate
training, managing a shopping centre and
a tour operation, all of which support and
strengthen the operations of its established
resorts.
The Origins
For centuries, tin mining, along with the
rubber and fishing industries, had made
Phuket one of the wealthiest provinces
in Thailand. By the late 19th century
however, large-scale commercial tin mining
operations had taken over and offshore
dredging and land mining were destroying
marine life and eroding the soil. After
mines were depleted, the miners moved
on, leaving many pockets of the island
environmentally devastated.
When Laguna Resorts & Hotels took over
the abandoned tin mine at Bangtao Bay
in 1984, the site resembled a moonscape.
The ground was pockmarked with craters
and littered with piles of blackened soil,
discarded machinery and ramshackle huts.
The soil was so leached by chemicals it
was thought the area would never sustain
vegetation. In 1977 a United Nations
Development Plan team surveying Phuket’s
tourism prospects, wrote off Bangtao Bay
saying it was “too environmentally damaged
to have any development potential.”
However, Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman of
Laguna Resorts & Hotels, then saw the
potential for developing the area into a
premier resort and thus Laguna Phuket was
born.
The Revival
It took remarkable vision, determination
and US$200 million (then Phuket’s largest
ever single investment) to bring this ravaged
wasteland back from the dead. Earth
moving equipment levelled the tortured
terrain and enormous quantities of fertilised
topsoil were trucked in to allow replanting of
hardy native plants, such as Casuarina and
palm trees. Fruit and flowering trees were
added to attract birds and wildlife whilst the
lagoons, once mining craters, were stocked
with marine life.
A sophisticated recycling system was built
to handle refuse and sewage disposal
and water treatment, eliminating the threat
of pollution to the surrounding land and
sea. And rather than tapping into Phuket’s
limited water supply, Laguna draws its
water from several freshwater lakes to run
through an onsite water treatment plant.
The low-rise hotels at the resort were
designed to enhance the environment
and reflect the beauty of Thai culture and
heritage. Timber has been used effectively
but sparingly to prevent further depletion of
Thailand’s limited forestry resources.

Today, Laguna Phuket spans six
developments, comprising Banyan Tree
Phuket, Sheraton Grande Phuket, Dusit
Thani Laguna Phuket, Laguna Beach
Resort, Allamanda Laguna Phuket and
Laguna Holiday Club Resort. It also
includes residences and townhomes, an
18-hole golf course, spas, wedding chapel
and shopping village.
Having celebrated its 20th anniversary
last year, Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman of
Laguna Resorts and Hotels said, “It gives
me tremendous satisfaction to see the
fruits of our labour blossom into the lush
tropical paradise it is today and to see
how, together with my colleagues, we
have preserved the rich heritage unique to
Thailand, imparting the warm hospitality
and romance to all who have had the
privilege of sharing this experience with.”
Laguna Phuket steams ahead in its
expansion, launching four new projects.The
Laguna Deluxe Townhomes and Deluxe
Residences are two-storey, semi-detached
and detached homes, respectively. These
Deluxe properties are approximately 30%
larger and feature a new architectural
design and upgraded home options
packages, on bigger land plots than
standard units.
The third project Laguna Village Phase II,
includes Residences VI and Townhome
IV, extension of the ever popular Laguna
Residences and Townhomes. These
property development consist of nine
units of Residences on land plots ranging
from 1176 to 1146 square metres, and
sixteen Townhomes consisting of eight
units in standard design and eight units in
deluxe version, all facing a tropical lagoon
with spectacular views. These projects
commenced in May 2008 and will be
completed in 2010.
Overwhelming demand for the Laguna
Phuket Dusit Thani Pool Villas has led to the
development being fully booked six months
ahead of schedule. The second phase of
17 villas is situated on the southern side
of the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket Resort
between a tropical lagoon, lush gardens
and a beautiful beach. The villas will have
lagoon views with some units looking out
onto the Andaman Sea and is expected
to be completed by beginning of 2011. All
of the 17 Dusit Thani Pool Villas in phase II
have been reserved. Plans for phase II will
be released at the end of this year.
Another exciting development to look
forward to is the launch of Laguna Tours
in November 2008. Six private luxury
speedboats and six top-of-the-line vans,
will be offering trips to nearby islands such
as Phi Phi, Coral Island and Racha Islands,
as well as Phang Nga Bay and the Krabi
Archipelago. Laguna Tours will also offer
land-based excursions around Phuket
ranging from cultural and shopping tours,
to a wide variety of adventure-based tours,
which include activities such as Go Carting
and All Terrain Vehicle tours.
The Future
Laguna Resorts & Hotels’ work to protect
the environment is still very much a major
priority, fighting to prevent further beach
erosion caused by previous offshore tin
mining in Bangtao Bay. Millions of baht are
spent every monsoon season to replace the
massive amount of sand swept away into
the deep holes on the ocean floor caused
by previous dredging.
Laguna Phuket is not only concerned
with the preservation of flora, fauna and
ecosystems, but also what it calls the
“human environment”. The company has
developed a donation program to sustain
projects that bring direct benefits to
residents of nearby villages. These projects
include a free pre-school for the children
of employees and local villagers, medical
services as well as educational scholarships.
Awards
Laguna Resorts & Hotels’ environmentally
responsible approach to tourism has
gained worldwide recognition. In 1992
it received the prestigious International
Hotel Association and American Express
Environmental Award for its achievements
as an international resort and hotel
development project with a proven record
of environmental conservation. The
International Hotel Association is the world’s
only global hotel association, with more
than 3,000 members in 145 countries.

Charting cool destinations in China and the Middle East
Banyan Tree is betting that you are dreaming of far-flung yet
compelling destinations such as Ras Al Khaimah, China’s Dunhuang
and Saint Lucia, among others. Ten years ago, the hospitality group
identified beautiful beach destinations such as Bintan, Indonesia
and the Maldives to set up shop. True to its original intention
to string a necklace of jewels around the globe, Banyan Tree is
building its new sanctuaries in deserts, cities and mountain locales
that everyone will be talking about in time to come.
Middle East’s positioning as a growing leisure destination and
business hub has made it an ideal location for the Banyan
Tree Group to embark on new developments. Leading up to
2011, there are 10 properties in the Middle East which include
developments in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah,
Jordan, and Oman. This will increase Banyan Tree’s total number
of rooms in the Middle East by 30-fold, with the dynamic addition
of 2252 rooms.
As the first golf and equestrian resort in the Middle East, Banyan
Tree Meydan will be the first pool villa-driven product in Dubai,
and it is located in Meydan City, an integrated development
in the heart of Dubai. Located within the region’s first upscale
integrated resort in Sifa, Oman, Banyan Tree Sifa and Angsana
Sifa are positioned as the anchor properties in a development that
comprises more than five hotels, a marina town, retail facilities and
a 18-hole golf course.
In China, Banyan Tree Dunhuang and Banyan Tree Tianjin will
align their strategy to bring the Banyan Tree experience to the
Middle Kingdom. Another first is the group’s agreement in historic
Macau to create the first authentic spa hotel in Cotai. Banyan Tree
Macau’s 251 suites is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
Banyan Tree was in the limelight at the Singapore Corporate Awards 2008 when
Executive Chairman and founder Mr. Ho Kwon Ping was bestowed the honour of Chief
Executive Officer of the Year. This accolade came hot on the heels of the Boutique
Hotelier of the Year award at the Style Awards 2008, hosted and organised by the
South China Morning Post and Harpers Bazaar (Hong Kong).
In the same light, the Group’s resorts and spas are receiving top honours, with entry
into the coveted Condé Nast magazines’ Hot Lists. After opening in December 2007,
Angsana Riads Collection, Morocco has made its way into the Condé Nast Hot List 2008
in both the United Kingdom, and the United States, for its stunning heritage riads. This
double success is replicated by Banyan Tree Madivaru, which features the first tented
pool villas in the Maldives. Banyan Tree Spa attained duo recognitions in the Condé Nast
Traveler (USA) Hot Spa, where both Banyan Tree Spa Bangkok, Thailand, and Banyan
Tree Spa Al Areen, Bahrain, were lauded.

Complementing the Group’s growing network of Angsana

has signed a management contract for an Angsana Resort
Saint Lucia in the island of Saint Lucia. Angsana Saint Lucia
