Cardinal Spellman High School is the premier, independent, co-educational, college preparatory,
Catholic high school in the New York Metropolitan area. Our mission is to promote a culture of
aspiration that encourages superior academic performance, leadership, and service. We strive to
make our program available to all qualified students. We emphasize personal development and
we foster a commitment to others that empowers our diverse student population to become
leaders who make a difference in our community, nation, and world.
3. Revised Vision
The vision of Cardinal Spellman High School is to become the premier, independent, co-educational,
college preparatory Catholic High School in the New York Metropolitan area.
4. Our Mission
The Cardinal Spellman High School community is
committed to:
•preparing students for post-secondary success
•promoting a culture of aspiration that encourages superior academic
performance, leadership, and service
•emphasizing personal development
•fostering a commitment to others that empowers our culturally diverse
student population to become leaders who make a difference in our
community, nation, and world.
5. School Wide Goals
1. Each student will come to school every day, on time,
and in complete uniform.
2. Each student will pass the appropriate Regents exams
by the end of the specified course.
3. Each student will fulfill community service requirements
within each academic school year.
4. Each student will discover his or her own spiritual
development.
6. Communication & Marketing
The revised vision for our school will communicated in
several ways and relies heavily on the people used to
communicate this to:

•Board of Directors
It can’t be a “one-time” only event but a continuous,
repetitive process consisting of 4 tactics...
7. 1. Visual Tactics
The revised vision will be visible in all areas of the school.
All members of the school community can see it in many
different areas:

The revised vision will be announced at every possible
schoolwide event:
•Pep rallies
•Parent/teacher conferences
•Sports games
•Assemblies
•Monthly community council meetings
9. 3. Interactive Communication Procedures
All members of the school community will be encouraged
to use a 2-way dialog to voice any comments or
concerns they may have about the new vision statement.
Encourage communication with administration.

•Online blogs

Members of the school leadership team will take
advantage of any opportunities to communicate the
revised vision to members of the school community.
Support from school leadership is key to implementing
the revised vision.

11. 5. Gather Data
It’s important to periodically gather data to gauge the
efficacy of our communication strategies.
Ex: Anonymous surveys produces data as to how our
efforts to have helped communicate the new vision.
12. Goals
Each of our 4 goals has its own specific timeline to be fulfilled and evaluated. At the end of 8 years,
key stakeholders will review the results of the goals and determine if they were implemented
properly and if the school’s mission statement and vision have been successfully fulfilled.
13. 1. Attendance
Our 1st goal is to increase attendance so that every student attends school on
time everyday.
•Plaques on wall with names of students from previous years who
received attendance awards
•Scholarships for students with exemplary attendance records
•Marking period awards
•Acknowledge awards during freshmen orientation, open houses, and
faculty conferences.
14. 2. Regents Exams
The entire faculty will take part in intense training and/or Regents based
workshops.
•At the end of the 1st semester, struggling students will be required to
attend after-school study sessions.
•Teachers will take turns teaching these study sessions.
•Evaluation at the end of each year to assess the number of students
able to pass the exams. Any student not passing an exam will have to
attend summer school and retake the exam at the next possible date.
15. 3. Community Service
The Guidance Department and Service Society will work together and be
responsible for exposing community service opportunities for students
so that every student achieves his/her community service goal.
•Document hours with log sheets.
•Turn in assignments to Guidance Counselor every marking period.
•Summer school to finish any hours not completed during school year.
16. 4. Spiritual Development
The Religion department will be responsible for maintaining the
students’ opportunities for spiritual development.
•In school assemblies, open discussions, mutual understanding of the
characteristics of a spiritual person.
•Internal meeting every semester focused on development and
strategies that would be useful to fulfill each goal.
•Once a year, entire faculty will be updated on students’ reactions to
his/her own spiritual development.
17. Action Plan & Timeline
Communicating and implementing our new school vision will take a concerted effort from all
members of the school community. We will use many different strategies to accomplish
these goals.
• Winter 2014: Administration will organize a special committee who will oversee the implementation of the
new vision and mission statement. This task group will:
o Prepare a large media campaign that will publicize the new vision and mission statement. The
media campaign will include posters, email blasts, radio announcements, school P.S.A.s, letters,
etc. The media campaign will target all members of the school community including students,
staff, families, Board of Directors, key stakeholders, community organizations, etc.
o Prepare an “unveiling” event for the beginning of the school year.
o Update all school documentation to include new vision statement and goals (ex. website,
handbook).
o Begin attending community events and other networking events (ex. Community Board meetings)

• Summer 2014:The planning committee will continue to work during summer months to
promote the new school vision and goals.
o Periodically update school website with announcements on upcoming unveiling
event.
o Continue to attend networking events in the community to promote new vision/goals.
o Contact local restaurants to see if they can donate food/beverages to event.
o Secure location for unveiling event.
o Send out “save the dates” to members of the school community.
o Solicit silent auction items to be auctioned at event.
o Periodically send out flyers, newsletters, emails, automated phone calls, etc to all
members of the school community announcing the upcoming unveiling event and
new school vision/goals.
o August: host “Back to School” orientation/open house and promote new vision/goals
at this event. Use posters, flyers, P.S.A.’s, and promotional items (pens, t-shirts,

• Fall 2014: Administration and committee will prepare for opening of the school year and unveiling
event:
o Review new school vision/goals during 2 day teacher PD before beginning of school.
o Hang new banners in all visible school areas and in classrooms.
o Continue to implement media campaign announcing the new vision/goals and the unveiling event.
o Send out event invitations.
o Confirm all contributors to event (caterers, facility, silent auction items, volunteers, master of
ceremonies, photographers).
o Continue to attend networking events to publicize new vision/goals and upcoming event.
o After unveiling event, send thank you notes to those that attended and volunteered. Update
website with pictures and testimonials from event.
o Hold pep rally for students to promote new visions/goals. Announce poster contest for who can
create the best poster for the new Send feedback forms to all members of the school community
to survey them on the new vision/goals marketing efforts on school vision.
o Committee continues to meet monthly to assess how the implementation efforts are going and
