3. History in Finland
• Funet WLAN Roaming idea
presented first in Autumn 2002 by
TUT DCE at Funet Tech. Days
• Cooperation with CSC led to
working with Terena Mobility from
2003 onwards => first eduroam
tests (NL, FI, PT, CR, UK)
• Terena Mobility work in TUT DCE –
CSC project
• Funet WLAN Roaming and
eduroam Finland to production
service in 2004.

production use

education and research roaming

About 50 realms, roughly 88000 roaming authentications /
year, over 1000 access points in educational institutions

Roams with Wireless Tampere and Sparknet community
networks, open for other roaming partners and roaming
research as a part of ICT SHOK Future Internet Testbed

7. Wireless Tampere community
network

a cooperative open wireless community network for
companies, consumers, education and research institutions
●
based on the RADIUS based eduroam(tm) technology for
roaming
●
58 realms, 44220 roaming authentications/year (2009), all
major cities and education institutions at Tampere region,
roughly 900 access points (most of them in public places)
●
participates already in Funet WLAN roaming, interested to
roam with also other municipal, community and commercial
Wi-Fi networks

Future directions
• Encouraging organisations to adopt RadSec =>
do not even have to run Radiator, there exists
open source proxy solution radsecproxy from
UNINETT
• Able and willing to test DNS based discovery or
RadSec in general but in search for partners
• Would really like to see DNS based peer-to-peer
roaming replacing hierarchical model and inter-
federation roaming between commercial and
academic worlds
