A direct object pronoun replaces a noun that is
the object of the verb where the action is
done directly to it.

3. Direct object pronouns
M’, T’ and L’ are placed before words that begin
with a vowel or silent H.
J’achète souvent des films. Je les achète.
4. Indirect object pronouns
An indirect object pronoun replaces a noun that is
the object of the verb but linked to the verb by a
preposition.
J’essaie un email à mon ami. Je lui essaie un
email.

5. Indirect object pronouns
These pronouns are most likely to be used after the
following verbs:
• Dire à
• Donner à
• Parler à
• Demander à
• Répondre à
Some verbs have an indirect object pronoun in
French but not in English.
• Téléphoner à
Il nous téléphone tous les jours.
6. Reflexive pronouns
These form reflexive verbs.
Je Me/m’ Myself
Tu Te/t’ Yourself
Il/elle/on Se/s’ Himself/herself/itself
Nous Nous Ourselves
Vous Vous Yourselves
Ils/elles Se/s’ Themselves
7. Y
Y is used instead of À or EN+the name of the
place.
Nous irons au cinéma la semaine prochaine.
Nous y’irons la semaine prochaine.
Y is used instead of LUI/LEUR when referring to
objects, actions, ideas and concepts.
Il joue les échec? Oui, il y joue quelquefois.
8. EN
EN replaces DU/DE LA/DE L’/DES + a noun, meaning
“some”, “any”, “of it” or “them”.
Il a voulu acheter du chocolat mais il n’y en avait
plus.
EN is also used instead of DE + a noun, after the
following verbs:
• Discuter de
• Se souvenir de
Notez vos idées et discutez-en.
9. Position of object pronouns
• Object pronouns normally come before the verb.
Je lui parle toujours.
• In a compound tense, the pronoun goes before
the auxiliary.
Nous y sommes déjà allés.
• When there are two or more verbs in the
sentence, the pronoun comes before the
infinitive.
Je ne peux pas le voir.
10. Position of object pronouns
When there are more than one object pronouns
in the sentence, they follow in this order:
Il nous en a parlé.

11. Position of object pronouns
• With negative imperatives, the pronoun comes before
the verb.
Ne leur parle pas!
• With positive imperatives:
- The pronoun comes after the verb and a hyphen is
added.
Appelle-les!
- ME and TE become MOI and TOI.
Ne me parle pas de vacances, parle-moi plutôt de travail.
- Columns 1 and 2 are reversed.
