Editor's Notes

  1. Kourtney Chevalier Kayla Harris
  2. My learning styles, according to the survey, showed that I am a very visual learner (9), very sensing (7), and in the middle for active (3) and global (1). I find that these correlate to my studying preferences. I excel in classes where I can see everything that I am doing and understand It organically rather than trying to picture it in my mind. Charts and diagrams stick out rather than a lecture because I can place exactly where the fact goes and have a visual representation. My sensing level was also not surprising, as I hate hypotheticals in learning situations. Using concrete information is key to my own understanding of a concept. I think my learning preferences have changed only slightly, maybe now I would score a higher active level. This class helped show me how to utilize my preferences for learning and take advantage of my own styles to improve my learning as best as I can. When I first took the learning preferences survey my results where the following: reflective (1), sensing (7), verbal (9), sequential (3). This seemed to fit my learning style well. I had know that I tend to lean toward verbal learning and preferred to do things in sequential order. Sensing also seemed to fit me very well.I would much rather learn factual material than abstractly. Hands-on work is one of the best ways for me to learn. I understand concepts in explanation, but if I want to master it quickly the best way is for me to do it myself. As we come to the end of class, I have found that I haven't seen much change in my learning style. I do think that the verbal is a little bit too heavy to one side. I think visual learning is a tool that I like to utilize in my learning, despite preferring verbal learning.
  3. Learning Preferences and the scales that go along with them help people, especially students, understand their thinking and how there are different styles to learning, not simply just the one way everyone is taught in school. Knowing there are differences and different strategies to maximize learning capabilities will help anyone achieve as much as possible. Understanding one’s personal learning preferences allows individuals to craft learning plans that will improve their overall learning. If a person is having a difficult time understanding the material of a class knowing the types of learning that they prefer can help them to absorb the knowledge in a way more useful to them individually.
  4. At the beginning of this class, I chose to be a Learning Warrior to deepen my knowledge about specific technologies. I believe I was successful in expanding my knowledge regarding screencasting and multimedia. Using the multimedia devices such as the hip replacement surgery gave me a better understanding of how multimedia can work towards maximizing my learning. Each pathway focuses on a different aspect of the technology. Understanding all, specifying one, and collaborating with others are different approaches that allow each person to take away different ideas about each technology. In any given group, the members will most likely be different types of learners and will need other points of view in order to round out a project. I did not change my pathway as I feel that my knowledge of social technologies was greatly expanded through these quests. At the beginning of class, I chose the Learning Warrior pathway. Throughout the semester I found that I did gain a deeper knowledge of multimedia technologies. I had never seen or used screencasting. Now, I not only know what screencasting is, but I also know how to utilize it for learning. I also gained a deeper knowledge of multimedia. I realized that multimedia learning is all around me and that I have often utilized it without even knowing. The different pathways help to provide a group with different ways of looking at things in hopes of producing better work overall. Learning Sages bring the big picture to the table, their focus is on gaining a spectrum of knowledge. Learning Warriors bring the details, their focus is on knowing one or few technologies well. Learning Guides help everyone work together to achieve the overall goal. I did not change my pathway over the course of the class.
  6. The Multimedia Technology Quest was the multimedia quest that I explored the most extensively for my learning. I enjoyed the simulations of the hip replacement surgery (minus the gross graphics) as well as the cell phone manufacturing simulation. Multimedia is using different types of information in different formats to create one academic lesson. The games used pictures and scenarios with real life facts to recreate a surgical procedure. Multimedia clearly accommodates my visual preference as the recreation of the situations allow me to see and understand the problem as I work through it. This also benefits my sensing and preference as it uses concrete information about what will happen and my active learning preference is accommodated because each move I make in the simulation has a direct and immediate consequence. There is no time for reflection in some situations and actively pursuing the knowledge is necessary to get the job done. In other multimedia aspects, my global learning preference is accommodated, such as in the California State Budget activity. Seeing the bottom line and then working towards fixing it is how a global learner prefers their data. The multimedia technology quest I found to be most interesting was multimedia. I really liked how interactive the technologies were for this learning strategy. I enjoyed the hip replacement surgery and the California state budget sites, as they engaged my sensing learning preference. Being able to have a hands-on experience with these activities gave me a greater understanding of the subject. The hip replacement surgery also engaged my sequential learning style with its step by step process. There were very clear instructions involved in both, so while they did lean to the visual side of the learning styles they were able to engage me verbally. The California state budget also made me really reflect on what was important to the state of California and how my decisions would affect the state overall.
  7. We found the multimedia technology to be the most interesting learning tool. We got to play games, plan budgets, learning about building bridges and learning about bionics and the human body. The most surprising learning technology was also multimedia because of all of the mediums that can be considered multimedia, as well as, all the different ways in which multimedia could be applied to learning. The technology that did not seem to work well for either of us was screencasting. Though it has its benefits, the screencasts were pointless to what we both are studying and they did not seem to enhance our learning either. If there were more screencasts readily available for subjects that pertain to our areas of study, they would be helpful as learning tools. The sign language screencast was interesting but it did not seem to be that different than a regular website or book devoted to teaching sign language. We would both like to explore multimedia further to increase our knowledge about the different ways you can learn using multimedia. Multimedia was the overall favorite for both of us because it engaged all of our learning preferences in a way that helped us achieve our learning goals despite our different preferences. We each were able to utilize the activities and our learning preferences in a way that was beneficial to our learning and completing the objective at hand. It was able to engage both sides of the learning spectrum in ways that some of the other technologies failed to do. It was accommodating for both visual and verbal learners, both active and reflective learners, and both global and sequential learners. Multimedia was a learning strategy that was useful to many different types of learners at the same time.
  8. The multimedia learning strategy that we will continue to use after this class is multimedia. This learning strategy allows us to take visuals, verbals, interactive games, and more and combine them to further our learning. It is really a strategy that plays to multiple types of learning styles. It is also something that we encounter many times everyday, from advertising to game play. When we are in our future careers, knowing how to use multimedia to our learning advantage will be an asset towards our professional success. Using well-done powerpoints and other multimedia projects for business presentations will utilize what we have learned this semester from all of the technologies that are encompassed by multimedia. All of the strategies and activities we have participated in through this course could be considered multimedia. Each one is a part of our daily lives and will continue to be in the future. Whether they are for learning or non-learning, this opportunity we had to gain a deeper understanding of each will be beneficial for both of us. I enjoyed all of them, except Podcasts. I still do not see the full value in listening to someone else talk for that long period of time when you can watch a video or screen cast instead. This course has given me a greater understanding of the term multimedia and the various ways that it is utilized throughout our daily lives. I think that understanding will allow me to have a greater control over how I interpret the overall use of technology in the learning and non-learning environments. That was the greatest lesson I learned overa ll.
