URBANISATION IN THE MODERN ERA
The year 1911 changed the course of Indian history. The
many protest movements led by Bengalis , the Mohun
Bagan Victory and an inclination towards Ancient Indian
Culture led to the shift of the British capital from Calcutta
to Delhi. A Mughal city was transformed into a modern
Capital with an English touch by the talented architect
Edwin Lutyens.
TRANSPORT:THEN AND NOW……………
Delhi , being the capital city, offers an extremely smooth
transport network. The history of modern transport in
Delhi can be traced back to the days of Raj. Much before
the Mutiny of 1857 , the imperial servants commissioned
Victorian buggies which ran between the Company
bunglows and residencies.
The Delhi Junction is the oldest railway station in Delhi .
It was established in 1864 with a single broad gauge train
from calcutta.

: then & now
Delhi’s cosmopolitan atmosphere
has given rise to a confluence
of clothing styles. It was a huge
transformation from Mughal
textiles to European clothes and a
short phase of Swadeshi clothes.
Later it was influenced by the
migrants and now Delhi offers a
wide selection of clothes .The
urban teens are Contributing to
the fashion world everyday.

Developments in art : 1857 to 2000
1) After the decline of royal patronage for miniature
Paintings , Delhi became an important centre for the
production of Company paintings.
2) Many craftsmen from all over the country migrated to
Delhi in search for jobs after the Princely states signed
The Instrument of Accession. Realizing the importance
of our traditional arts, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay founded
the Crafts Council of India.
3) The National Gallery of Modern Art was founded in order
to preserve works of art from the contemporary era and
recent past. The museum is housed in the grand Jaipur
House, designed by Sir Arthur Bloomfield, as a
residence for the Maharaja of Jaipur .
