3. Need of TransportNeed of Transport
Market situation :
Extensive urbanization and evolution of passengers
needs and expectations
India’s Urban population in 2026 will be 53,48,09,000
Poor quality and capacity of bus systems
Huge increase of fuel prices
5. 5
In the last 50 years…
Increased use of
motor vehicles
Unsustainable
urban transport
Greenhouse gas
emissions
Ill-health due to air
and noise pollution.
Congestion
EFFECTS
Total carbon dioxide
equivalent gases emission
in 2010 is 46000 million
metric tons.
6. 68 g CO2/
km / pass
208g CO2/ km / pass
( 70 p )
( 8 p )
( 210 p )
TRAMWAY = Solution for
climate change
Challenge
200g CO2/ km / pass

Some Advantages of Tramways
It can carry huge amount of goods and passengers at a time
because it has a large carrying capacity.
The capital investment required for tramways are less in
comparison to rail transport. Since it requires less investment,
the carrying charges are considerably low.
In this mode of transport the chances of accidents and
breakdown is less and therefore does not involve much cost on
reorganization and restructure.
9. These are operated in busy
areas when other modes of
transport fails.
It is regarded as the most
economical mode of transport.
Travelling by tram is much
more enjoyable for users than
on other public transport.
Modern Tramway Systems 9
10. 200 passengers can be carried.
The TRAM can stop and start
faster, which provides the
system with enhanced safety
and speed.
The tram’s low center of
gravity reduces the sensation
of dizziness or movement.

11. Some features of Tramways:
Reduction of noise nuisance
Use of insulating materials
Improvement of the wheel-rail contact with acoustic dampers
Emission of 5 dB sound less than automotive traffic
12. Access to all
Tram vehicles are fully accessible to persons with reduced mobility
14. City PlanningCity Planning
The Tramway is an good opportunity to
reshape the Urban Environment.
The Tramway is a landmark in the city
(Orientation, identification).
It gives a strong image in planned city
manner.
It facilitates the city development
(Transport, business activities, pedestrian
friendly)
15. French Case: Lyon –Tramway T1

19. Impact on city
Increase real estate value along line
(between 25 and 100% depending on
location and features)
Commercial areas development along
the line
Most difficult part of the project : to
regain space against cars or buses once
abandoned years ago…
20. Modern Tramway Systems 20
Many of the citizens currently use PT.
Current PT service and regulation have some deep weaknesses
that shall be fixed anyway.
Investing in public transport means doing something for the
majority of citizens.
Investing for private transport means trigger a process that
increases the traffic.
Current Growth of car ownership makes this moment the “right
moment”
ConclusionsConclusions
21. Modern Tramway Systems 21
Time has proven that most countries made huge mistake in
managing urban mobility during last 50 years.
This brought congestion and health problems related to pollution to
increase more and more.
So it is required to build up the Efficient, Economic, Less time
Consuming, Safer & Sustainable Development of the Public
Transport.
