The works that best express Rafael Moneo’s design
philosophy are those in which the context bears
forceful witness to its own presence, and does so
through the narration of places, as exemplified by
the Merida museum, the Roman theater at Carthage
and the project for enlarging the Prado, still in construction. While in Italy the heavy burden of history
with its monuments calls for reutilization projects
where confrontation is endless and heavily penalizing, this is not true of such countries as Spain
and Portugal, where the relationship with pre-existing structures is a natural fact, unrestrained by
inhibitions, which, as in the case of Pamplona for
Moneo, can fearlessly express itself, in the absence
of the picturesque element that makes buildings
so falsely antique. In the project for transforming
the ancient palace of Rancho el Sabio erected in
the late 12th century, commissioned by the Government, the building will become the Archivio Reale
y General de Navarra. The ancient structure had
retained, in spite of its deterioration and general
state of abandonment, the character of a closed
fortress, a walled image dominating the landscape
from the top of a promontory. Only the northern
and western walls, still standing, have been reintegrated in a unitary design reflecting the original
layout, while the newly-built parts mark the planimetric subdivision of the two main functional areas:
the courtyard, around which open off the reading
rooms and library, and the section containing the
archives and offices on the eastern side. The type
of abstraction that architecture can propose always
implies a material nature, and this, as in the case of
the archives, need not necessarily find expression
in traditional technologies. Moreover, such struc-

ancora in costruzione.

tural authenticity does not determine the authenticity or success of a project, which instead finds
new life in its new form, without losing the sense
of the original construction. It is for this reason
that Moneo, in restoring the ancient royal palace,
chose to use a continuous stone facing on both
the existing parts and the newly built ones, as in
the case of the great Homenaje tower, whose wall,
entirely rebuilt of reinforced concrete, consists of
a stone facade of the ventilated type. And the use of
glass for closing the cloister, mounted on a stainless steel structure, declares the possibility of harmonious coexistence between the massive pillars
and a contemporary use of materials. A building
is totally changed depending on whether it is built
of stone, brick or simply concrete; and the choice
of a continuous, monolithic stone material for the
archives transforms the sense of distance, introducing a sensorial effect deriving from its colors,
and giving us a new feeling of involvement in the
work itself. The search for stereometric purity and
the elimination of polychromatic tones in favor of
a single color enhances the effect of the homogeneous surfaces, where any emphatic chromatic effect is categorically rejected. It is remarkable how,
in the concreteness of this work, the life of each
surface is expressed far from the abstract horizon
of pure two-dimensional geometry, assuming corporeal reality and visibility through the material,
and the powerful thickness of the walls, investing
space, confronting and resolving the continuity,
depth and stratigraphic logic of the bodies that
participate in the construction of the work.
