To install synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH)-
STM4 equipment setup at source and destined
location. Provide end to end connectivity using
optical fibers. Configuration of network and routing
data to reach destined location.
Jan 8, 2017 SKNCOE BE (E &TC) - 2014 15 2
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) is digital
transmission system protocol, standardized by ETSI that
transfer multiple digital bit streams synchronously over
optical fiber using lasers.
SDH is ideal for network providers, because it delivers an
efficient, reliable network management system that easily
adapts to accommodate bandwidth–consuming application
and services.
Jan 8, 2017 SKNCOE BE (E &TC) - 2014 15 3
Jan 8, 2017 SKNCOE BE (E & TC) – 2014 15 4
Survey Transmission rates of up to 10G can be achieved in
modern SDH system. SDH has got extensive OAM & P
capabilities that is operation, administration, maintenance and
protection.
This technology is applied all round the globe with different
governing regulation. This is purely transmission technology
and it is latest. Hence it is deployed by many telecom service
vendors .

Popularity of SDH systems among telecom service
providers became prime motivation behind this project.
SDH is a multiplexing protocol in which two or more
signals are transmitted at nominally the same digital rate and
their significant time instances occur at nominally same time.
This project deals with the installation and commissioning
of SDH equipment in the field.
The equipment used in this project is SDH-STM-4 which is
make of Fibcom Corp.
Jan 8, 2017 SKNCOE BE (E & TC) – 2014 15 6
SDH-STM-4 equipment has transmission capability of four
times that of STM-1 that is approx. =4 x 155 =622 Mbps.
Prime achievement of SDH is, it is optical signal
transmission standard and can interconnect multi-vendor
equipment.
After installation, the network is configured and data
transfer from one end to other is verified by various
application layer protocols such as HTTP, FTP, ping
mechanism.
Jan 8, 2017 SKNCOE BE (E &TC) - 2014 15 7
Jan 8, 2017 SKNCOE BE (E & TC) – 2014 15 8
From block diagram, prime components of the system are
optical fiber media, SDH-STM 4 equipment, routers,
network management software and computers to provide
data.
Considering OSI model for network establishment, optical
fiber media belongs to physical layer, SDH-STM 4 is in data
link layer, routers are part of network layer and application
layer protocols such as HTTP,FTP are experimented using
computers.
SDH uses Time division multiplexing (TDM) to transmit
constant stream of information.

In this project, E1(2.048 Mbps) links are connected to STM-4
equipment which has capability to multiplex at 622 Mbps and
transmit on optical fiber media which has very high bandwidth.
Data to be transferred is mapped to SDH frames.
During the process, header and extraneous bits are added for
OAM&P facility.

Simplified multiplexing and de-multiplexing techniques.
Direct access to lower order tributaries.
Accommodates existing PDH signals.
Capable of transporting broadband signals.
Multi-vendor, multi operator environment.

Thus this project is implementation of SDH transmission
system which is modern and latest technology used
across the globe.
Commissioning the system builds up solid network of
exchanges and hence certainly improve quality of
telecommunication.
This technology is applied all around the globe with
different governing regulation. This is purely
