2. The front cover of the digipak consists of natural and muted colours that are dull yet are bright and soft
colours, such as, light blue, brown, white, etc. In addition, the front cover shows the picture of the band, with
a medium close-up shot used for the lead singer to emphasis that he is the main feature of the album, making
the audience being able to recognise him. A mid-shot/medium long-shot is used for the other two members
in the background. The use of a dull overlay on the front cover perhaps implies that the album consists of
songs that are calm and composed, being ‘ballad’ types of songs rather than dance songs. Moreover, each
member is wearing black, which is a dominant colour, perhaps connoting simplicity, authority and power or
even formality. This therefore creates contrast to the natural landscape in the background, which is of a gold,
sand-like colour. Likewise, the colours used in this album conform to the conventions of a pop rock band
genre, and gives a positive representation of the album and the genre. In addition, these colours are can be
described as being: nude, natural and bare, which gives the impressions that the album purely focuses on the
genre of the songs, and reflects the genre of ‘soft rock’.
The front cover of the album (two hands gripping together) uses the ‘masthead’
method, with the band name “The Script” written in bold at the top, with the album
title “Science & Faith” right underneath it. The main image of the two hands, suggests
connotations of unity and strength, as the hands are tightly gripped together. Also, the
warm vintage effect on the background is really effective, as it is made to look old,
which could perhaps link to the idea that faith has been around for centuries. In
addition, the colour scheme has been carried through to the back of the album (the
two hands with a motion of a ‘high-five’) with the warm, vintage look still being in
place, which makes the colour scheme and overall style of the album consistent. Also,
the two hands are displayed to be in a position that suggests the album is about pain,
heartbreak, and also strength, as the hands come together in the front cover.
The typography of this cover is sans, as it is masculine, simple and bold, suggesting how
modern and well-designed it is. This also reflects the genre of music as ‘soulful’. Likewise, the
album digipak develops their star image motifs as to what their style is and how they want to
be portrayed to their target audience. Furthermore, despite the album having a very
simplistic design, it still creates a certain feel of unity and dominance with the use of the
subtle and brown shade colours, which therefore makes it effective.
Like all albums, their album also includes industry information, such
as, their record label, companies involved in making the album and
productions and distributions credits. Also, there is a barcode
situated at the bottom left of the back cover to show authenticity
and professionalism, which is followed by the record label logo.
3. This album does not contain the band’s name/title, which instantly subverts and does not follow the
regular/typical conventions of music albums, as the vast majority of album covers do include their band name on
the front cover. In addition, this implies that perhaps the band think of themselves as being quite well-known and
popular, and therefore don’t feel the need to include the band name, as the public and their target audience
would already know and recognise them, knowing who they are. In addition, the colours used for the front cover
are bright and vibrant, yet dark and luminous, as the two male artists blend in and camouflage with the pitch black
background. However, the female artist contrasts from them and is made to be more noticeable and eye-catching,
as her clothing/costume consists of colours that stand out, especially being paired with the dark background
behind her. Moreover, the front cover seems to showcase the female artist the most, due to her bright coloured
red hair and clothing, which makes an obvious and clear understanding, that the female character “Hailey
Williams” is the most known member of the band, as she has sung songs individually apart from the band and has
gained fame from being a member of the group and also being an independent singer. Also, the colours used in
the front cover conforms to the conventions of the 'new wave’ and ‘funk rock’ genre, as it gives a positive vibe and
displays characteristics common to pop music, since the artists are wearing simple yet ‘cool’ clothes, especially the
girl, as she is wearing a denim light blue jacket with a plain white top and stands out the most because of her
clothing.
The back cover of the album consists of the same colours that are also used in the front cover, such as, blue,
green, red, yellow and black, giving the album a feel of professionalism and continuity, since the colours used
have not changed but instead stayed the same. Moreover, the font of the track list is in capital letters and
overall looks as though it is ‘handwritten’(handwriting) because the font used is not neat and sharp but in the
type style of ‘sans serif’, giving a more ‘soft’ look to the album. In addition, the font colour is white, and
contrasts well with the black and multi-coloured background, as the viewer can easily read the titles of the
soundtracks included in the album. On a creative perspective, to me it seems that the plain black background
and the dashes/flares of colour at the bottom of the back cover, perhaps suggests a meaning of it being, a
glimmer of light in a dark time, as a new beginning or that it just symbolises and represents ‘fun’ or
‘excitement’, since the colours used are bright and vivid.
There is a barcode presented in the bottom left hand corner of the back cover of the album, which is
visible on all albums, as it is a legal requirement, showing authenticity and professionalism and also
so that the product can be scanned. Also, the bottom right hand of the back cover includes
information about the record label.
4. The front cover of the digipak consists of just 4 colours, which are: blue, black, yellow and white. In addition, the front cover
of this album shows the 4 members of the band standing in a line, with different hand gestures and foot positions. The title
of the album is placed at the bottom of the front cover in the centre, which instantly makes it noticeable and attention-
grabbing, as it is easily seen, since it is written in bold and is a sans-serif font type. Also, the band name is situated at the top
of the front cover, again in the centre, just like the album name. This precise alignment of the band name and album name
both being placed in the centre, easily and conveniently helps the viewer/target audience to identify these two important
titles. Moreover, the design of the ‘V’ shape that overlaps the picture of the members, is the band’s logo. The logo is
appealing and eye-catching, and therefore the placement of it being in the centre, helps their target audience recognise
them, also making their logo popular and known, and as a result, this can be described as being a way of ‘self promotion’,
because when people buy this album, they will see the logo, and eventually perhaps recognise the band just by seeing their
logo, even if their band name and pictures of them are not displayed on the front cover for their next album.
Furthermore, the design of their band name catches one’s attention, firstly because of the placement of it, being right at the
top and in the middle of the front cover, and second, because of the unique design, with the first letter of the name being
given more emphasis, since it is shaped like a ‘tick’, which could also perhaps cleverly display that the album and band itself
is the 'correct’ and ‘right’ album for their target audience. In terms of mise-en-scene, the members clothing/costume is
simple yet ‘cool’ and ‘trendy’, as they are all wearing black (dark shaded colours), except for the boy in the middle wearing a
white t-shirt. This clearly makes it evident that, that boy is perhaps the ‘most known’ member out of the group, since he is
one of the lead vocalists in he group and has gotten a lot of recognition for his voice from the public.
The back cover of the album consists of just 2 colours, which are: blue and black. It is simple, yet the track
list of the songs included in album, are clearly visible and easy to read, because the font type that the song
titles are written in are ‘sans-serif’, which gives the album a soft and ‘neat’ look overall. Also, like all albums,
there is a barcode presented in the bottom left hand corner of the back cover of the album, as it is a legal
requirement, showing authenticity and professionalism and also so that the product can be scanned. In
addition, at the bottom of the back cover, in the centre, there is included, brief set of industry information,
such as, their record label, companies involved in making the album and productions and distributions
credits.
Likewise, the overall look of this digipak, with the front cover, along with the back cover, conforms to the
conventions of a pop, pop rock band genre, as the members are dressed in a typical/ certain style of clothing which
is usually how pop boy bands tend to dress. For example, One Direction. Moreover, their outfits makes them look
cool and stylish, and the use of the bright and vibrant colour of blue, the album gives out a positive vibe, and makes
it engaging and appealing to their target audience.
