3. Greatest Accomplishment Thomas Jefferson was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. It was ratified on July 4, 1776; which we now recognize as Independence Day. The purpose of this document was to announce our freedom and separation from Great Britain.

4. Other Notable Accomplishments He began and finished the First Barbary War; the 1st significant over-seas war (1801-1805) He established the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1802 He was founder of the University of Virginia in 1819 He bought the Louisiana Territory from France; which doubled the size of the United States (known as the Louisiana Purchase) He publicly opposed slavery and drafted several proposals to outlaw slavery. In 1807, he signed a bill that abolished the slave trade.

6. Thomas Jefferson was the only two-term President who never vetoed a bill.

7. Thomas Jefferson is the only president to have a unique tombstone that does not speak of his Presidency.

9. University of Virginia Classes began in 1825. One of the most influential writers of all time, Edgar Allen Poe, attended this university in 1826.
