2. This session The need to recruit and organise apprentices and young workers generally Issues around engaging young workers Some solutions Capacity, support and resources
3. Unions and Young Workers UNION DENSITY WORKERS AGED16-24 9.6% UNION DENSITY NATIONALLY 27.4%
4. Barriers identified Lack of awareness Outdated and militant Cost vs. proof of benefits Fear of isolation
5. I don’t need a union It is impossible to get sacked, because you have got to get a warning, a verbal warning, a so and so warning I don’t really see how they can help me. If I have got a problem I will go to my line manager. Some of the people I work for are really approachable so I have got enough people at work and procedures in line to look after me I think. I don’t need a union. Things have changed slightly if you have an industrial dispute now there are much more options open to you to be able to find somebody to help you fight your cause…. The internet is full of places you can go to and people who want to help you sort yourself out…that probably did not exist 10-20 years ago
9. Activity Thinking about your union branch and workplace Where are there likely to be apprentices What is your current capacity to recruit and organise them ? What barriers might you face? What resources do you need? Any further support from the TUC
10. Checklist Access to new starters (not just inductions) Materials Whats the hook – what would make them bother? Individual and collective Return visits Visible campaign for quality apprenticeships
