and worldwide: main tendencies and forecasts”. Main goal is to analyze m-Health market and to define the
main development tendencies in Russia and worldwide.
m-Health definition
m-Health definition usually includes services, initiatives, programs and other activities in the medical and
health sphere, that had been realized with the use of mobile devices (telephones, smartphones, Tablet
PCs) and different wireless technologies. Generally m-Health is the use of mobile technologies for medical
services and information in health care. m-Health is a part of more widely known e-Health definition.
m-Health projects help to solve different tasks such as
increasing access to health care and health-related
information; increase the possibility for diagnostics,
monitoring and timely tracking of diseases; provide useful
information about public health system; expanding access to
medical education and professional trainings for medical
staff.
One of the current trends in global health is the providing of
services in the health care sphere via mobile phones and
smarphones. In m-Health terms implemented different services with various complex technologies:
 Projects using bulk SMS aiming to inform (the initiators can be government, public
organizations, pharmaceutical companies, etc.)
 Mobile TeleMedicine;
 Apps that can be downloaded from the internet apps shops and are being used for different
purposes (fitness, informational, etc.)
 Complex apps/platforms for mobile phones, with the integrated opportunities/ or special devices
for metering key life indicators – sugar level, pressure etc.

Mobile Health is effectively used in the treatment and prevention of communicable and non-communicable
diseases, care of the elderly population, informing pregnant women in order to prevent child and maternal
mortality.
The fastest growing segment of the m-Health market is a mobile application for smartphones. Four main
categories of mobile applications can be emphasized: general health and fitness (fitness, nutrition, etc.),
medical information (manuals, information, diagnosis and education), remote consultation and monitoring,
health management (electronic records of patients, logical and billing support).
m-Health market in the world
m-Health market is establishing. It consists of several segments, such as mobile medical applications or
compatible mobile medical equipment, services, etc.
The largest part of m-Health project in the world - 46% - implemented in the field of health, in second
place - the sphere of prevention of diseases (27% of the projects). It should be noted that one project can
be implemented in several categories.

Projects purposes and the primary tasks vary from country to country: in developed countries, services,
and services are aimed primarily at improving the quality of life, the level of medical services; in developing
countries - to address urgent health issues such as the fight against AIDS, access to health services.
United States is the most developed market by number of m-Health projects - 175 projects, equivalent to
18% of the total. The UK implemented the largest number of projects among the countries of Western
Europe. The second highest number of m-Health projects in Western Europe is Spain - 11 projects; in third
is Sweden - 8 projects. Most of the projects launched by the m-Health in Europe devoted to the monitoring
of patients with chronic diseases and elderly people living alone. Among other developed countries with a
relatively high number of m-Health projects can be identified Canada, South Korea and Australia. The table
presents data for 15 countries.

The key areas of m-Health apps in developing countries are: education and awareness, remote data
collection about diseases and patients, remote monitoring, communication, and training of medical
workers, tracking disease outbreaks and epidemics, support diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, the
most urgent problem to be solved in developing countries is: maternal and child health and infectious
diseases. South Africa is the second largest in the world by number of projects. India, along with Uganda is
in third place.
m-Health market in Russia
In Russia, a state program of development and modernization of health care had been accepted. Special
attention is paid to the informatization of the industry. Plan of Health informatization is synchronized with
the overall program of health care until 2020.
Under this program the following services are planning and implementing:
 An electronic entry to the doctor via universal recording system on the public services portal
 An electronic medical records
 An electronic prescription
 Register of high-tech medical care in an electronic form
 An electronic medical library
 TeleMedical consultaions, systems of videoconferencing
 Distance monitoring and screening of patients with chronic diseases
 Service: patient’s personal account
According to J’son & Partners Consulting around 16 projects and services of m-Health are presented in
Russia. For users of mobile phones and smartphones available both free and paid apps in app stores.
In 2010 – 2012 all operators of “Big 3” started to provide services and/or conclude the partnerships
agreements in m-Health sphere.

In Russia among the main barriers for m-Health market
development emphasize: low level of informatization of
the Russian medical institutions, poor command of the
IT culture among nurses, conservatism of physicians
and patients.
Nevertheless, according to the market participants’
forecasts, the m-Health market will rapidly expand;
doctors, patients (especially in large cities) will go for
providing and receiving medical services via mobile
technologies.
Market barriers and drivers
The most significant driver of m-Health market is a fast growing penetration of smartphones, the demand
for m-Health by patients/users, the implementation of patient-oriented models in the field of medical
services, technological innovation and easy access to mobile solutions. The increase in the target groups,
reducing costs of m-Health solutions, increasing number of companies’ partnerships, new innovative
market players, and costs reduction are among the important factors.
Consumer “non-readiness” is a constraint factor for m-Health market development. Patients and physicians
are unaware of the existence of m-Health solutions or cannot find them. On the other hand, cost is the
most important barrier for m-Health and often patients are not willing to pay for high-tech solutions.
Information security is also a barrier, as it includes a wide range of questions on data privacy protection
and data security. As a result, the target audience of m-Health (the elderly population, people with chronic
diseases) has a low penetration rate of smartphones, which is an additional constraint to the development
of m-Health market.
The m-Health market is relatively new and some problems need to be solved: development of a system of
interaction between participants, the choice of the most successful business models, building partnerships,
developing universal regulations and standards.
Trends and forecasts of m-Health market development
According to Research2Guidance, almost 500 mln of 1.4 bln. Smartphone users in 2015 will be using m-
Health apps.
Smartphone aps will become a killer application for many m-Health solutions. The price reduction will only
encourage this process. Average price for apps in Android Market dropped from 7,74 USD in 2010 to 4,31
USD in 2012, Blackberry – from 22,12 to 16,23 USD, Windows – from 4,99 to 2,99.
Furthermore, with the market development, distribution of m-Health solutions channels will change

The fastest growing segment of the m-Health market is a mobile application for smartphones. Four main categories of mobile applications can be emphasized: general health and fitness (fitness, nutrition, etc.), medical information (manuals, information, diagnosis and education), remote consultation and monitoring, health management (electronic records of patients, logical and billing support). m-Health market in the world m-Health market is establishing. The UK implemented the largest number of projects among the countries of Western Europe. The second highest number of m-Health projects in Western Europe is Spain - 11 projects; in third is Sweden - 8 projects. Most of the projects launched by the m-Health in Europe devoted to the monitoring of patients with chronic diseases and elderly people living alone. Among other developed countries with a relatively high number of m-Health projects can be identified Canada, South Korea and Australia. The table presents data for 15 countries.

Additionally, the most urgent problem to be solved in developing countries is: maternal and child health and infectious diseases. South Africa is the second largest in the world by number of projects. India, along with Uganda is in third place. m-Health market in Russia In Russia, a state program of development and modernization of health care had been accepted. Special attention is paid to the informatization of the industry. Plan of Health informatization is synchronized with the overall program of health care until 2020.
