Corruption an all-pervasive global issue
1. Corruption - An All-pervasive Global Issue
Corruption has become rampant far and away, leaving no field covered, be it politics,
education, businesses or government. Some of the grizzly faces of corruption include
bribery, extortion, scandals, forgery, embezzlement and graft. Not to overstate, almost
every issue we face today as a nation is caught in the grip of corruption. There is no sole
reason to abet it, but there are many why it should be rooted out from our society. It
adversely affects a country’s economy, businesses, social life, the bureaucratic system
and government policies that are implemented for public welfare.
Though we feel proud of being a native of a democratic country, most of us don’t really
know what democracy exactly means. Democracy, in simple terms, is the government by
people, for the people. The government generates revenue from different sources,
including taxes levied on income, sales, services and wealth accumulation of individuals
and corporations. It’s government’s accountability to use the revenue in public welfare
activities. The government issues and implements various public welfare schemes and
policies to make maximum usages of the revenue. As the money decided for a particular
scheme goes through various departments, just a few percent of the total reaches the
general public. No matter whether it’s a home scheme, pension plan or subsidy on ration,
LPG and other stuffs, we don’t usually reap its 100% benefits just because of the
corruption. In our daily life, we often encounter many government officials who are
besmeared in some corrupted activities. Though most countries have declared
corruption as a flagrant offense, officials promote corruption fearlessly as they know
everyone the hierarchy is besmeared in some illegal activities such as bribery, scandals,
extortion, etc.
In recent years, corruption has grown by leaps and bounds, especially in the government
sectors. When talking about corruption in American government, it is also not an
exception. According to an annual Corruption Perceptions Index released by the
Transparency Internal, it’s admittedly reported that the US also didn’t score as good as
other nations in the list. Surprisingly indeed, America is tied for 17th in a four-way tie
with Barbados, Hong Kong and Ireland. Government corruption includes use of power
and position for illegitimate private gain. There has to be a strict code of conduct for
legislatures, bureaucrats, politicians and government officials to prevent government
corruption. Judiciary should also handle corruption-related cases more strictly. Other
than this, media can play a vital role in removing corruption from our society. This is how
we can develop a corruption-free nation.
