  3. 3. Identity Development <ul><li>The Cass Identity Model is a fundamental theory process of six stages of gay identity development. </li></ul>

Identity Development <ul><li>Identity Confusion - the person is amazed to think of themselves as different… &quot;Could I be gay?&quot; </li></ul><ul><li>Identity Comparison - the person accepts the possibility of being gay and examines the wider implications. &quot;Maybe I an gay.&quot; (Will seek information about sexual identity and gay community resources ) </li></ul>

Identity Development <ul><li>Identity Tolerance – the person understanding they are &quot;not the only one&quot; (Receiving support in finding positive gay community resources) </li></ul><ul><li>Identity Acceptance - The person attaches a positive connotation to their gay identity and accepts rather than tolerates it. &quot;I will be okay.&quot; There is continuing and increased contact with the gay culture. </li></ul>

Identity Development <ul><li>Identity Pride - Coming out of the closet arrives, “I've got to let people know who I am!” (Developing skills for coping with reactions from others to disclosure of sexual identity) </li></ul><ul><li>Identity Synthesis - The person integrates their sexual identity with all other aspects of self, and sexual orientation becomes only one aspect of self rather than the entire identity. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Language Variations Accent & Dialect  <ul><li>Extravagant language using such expressions as, 'Oh my word!' 'Give you a clue' </li></ul><ul><li>'Good heavens!' and 'Oh, my dear!' </li></ul><ul><li>readily associated with gay men. </li></ul><ul><li>They tend to use such words as </li></ul><ul><li> 'terrific,' 'fabulous,' 'charming,' </li></ul><ul><li> not typical straight man vocabulary </li></ul><ul><li>Exaggerations are made more conspicuous by placing emphasis on certain syllables and intonations, sometimes a lisp, adding effeminacy to the speech. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Sub-Culture   <ul><li>Like any other group, gays also put titles on the types of guys in their community, except the titles don’t carry any sort of social status. Here are some of the titles: </li></ul><ul><li>Chub – a large, overweight, or obese man </li></ul><ul><li>Bear – a man with a stocky or heavyset build; typically hairy body and facial hair; sometimes older (or older looking) and displaying a masculine appearance and mannerisms </li></ul><ul><li>Daddy – an older man, sometimes a bear </li></ul><ul><li>Cub – a younger version of a bear </li></ul><ul><li>Chaser – a man who is of smaller body size and/or stature. The term chaser is sometimes used in various communities to describe an outsider who is sexually attracted to people within the community </li></ul><ul><li>Otter – A gay man who is very hairy all over his body, but is smaller in frame and weighs considerably less than a bear. </li></ul><ul><li>Twink- A gay young man, skinny and no body hair </li></ul>
