Josh Bailey conducted an experiment mixing voice recordings with sound effects and background music to create a short audio piece. He began by writing a script noting where sounds would be inserted. Sounds and music were then imported into Premiere Pro and edited together, cutting out pauses and adding fade transitions between some effects. Background music was used under the intro to convey boredom. While the mixture of voice and effects worked, he felt the final product could have included more effects and music in the ending and intro for better balance.

Process At the start of production, the first thing I had to make sure I did was write a script. So I did just that on a Word document and also placed the specific sound effects I would have between sentences. This required me to have a clear sense on where I would want to include sounds and exactly what sounds I’d use and from which website.
Process The next step was to import my recordings and downloaded sound effects into premiere pro and edit them into place. Any stutters and pauses that were present in my recordings I simply cut them out using the cut tool
Process For some sound effects I added a transition effect that makes the sound fade away and into another. I also added background music to the first few seconds of recording to amplify how boring it is as that is what I was going for.
Process The final product of my experiment compliments the mixture of voice over and effects but I do believe that mix is not even, I could have included more sound effects and background music for the ending as well as the intro.  Final product - Experiment
Reflection • What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product? • Things included in my experiment that will feature in my final product consist of the use of my own voice sound effects as well as the transitions like the fading technique • However in my final product the use of sound effects will be different from what it is now. The sound effects here are to set the scene and create images of my morning routine whereas in my podcast their use will be exclusively for comedic effect.

Experiments with sound effects and transitions

  • 2. Process At the start of production, the first thing I had to make sure I did was write a script. So I did just that on a Word document and also placed the specific sound effects I would have between sentences. This required me to have a clear sense on where I would want to include sounds and exactly what sounds I’d use and from which website.
  • 3. Process The next step was to import my recordings and downloaded sound effects into premiere pro and edit them into place. Any stutters and pauses that were present in my recordings I simply cut them out using the cut tool
  • 4. Process For some sound effects I added a transition effect that makes the sound fade away and into another. I also added background music to the first few seconds of recording to amplify how boring it is as that is what I was going for.
  • 5. Process The final product of my experiment compliments the mixture of voice over and effects but I do believe that mix is not even, I could have included more sound effects and background music for the ending as well as the intro.  Final product - Experiment
  • 6. Reflection • What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product? • Things included in my experiment that will feature in my final product consist of the use of my own voice sound effects as well as the transitions like the fading technique • However in my final product the use of sound effects will be different from what it is now. The sound effects here are to set the scene and create images of my morning routine whereas in my podcast their use will be exclusively for comedic effect.
