Night By Elie Wiesel
Night
One of my favorite books I have ever read was Night by Elie Wiesel. In the memoir Night by Elie
Wiesel, Wiesel tells a horrific tale of a Jewish teenager's experiences in the Holocaust. This story
takes place in Germany at several different concentration camps, one being Auschwitz. Throughout
this heart wrenching story, Elie Wiesel falls victim to one of the millions of Jews getting taken from
their home and out into camps during the Holocaust. The book Night has a title which symbolizes
death. The novel has a theme of family; a lot of people take for granted their family and the ties
between them. In the book, the character Elie matures from a young teenager into a strong man with
many qualities, including being a brave, loyal,...show more content...
Throughout the book, Elie grows from a young, scared teenager into a strong leader. He led his
father through his final days when he could no longer fend for himself and also helped many others
along the way. The author, Elie Wiesel, is an amazing leader and even now, having lived through
the unimaginable, still talks about what happened and educates people about the past. He does not
possess hatred or revenge. The Holocaust is a very heart wrenching topic to talk about considering
his whole family died in it and his father died right in front of his eyes. Yet, he still leads our
community in serving others, educating us about everything that happened, opening up and talking
about it for all to hear. To me, this truly exemplifies an outstanding

Night, By Elie Wiesel is a devastatingly true story about one man's witness to the genocide of his
own people. Living through the horrifying experiences in the German concentration camps of
Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Elie sees his family, friends and fellow Jews starved, degraded, and
murdered. In this essay I will address three important topics expressed throughout the course of the
book. First, I will discuss the struggle and eventual loss of religious faith by Elie in his battle to
maintain humanity in this de–humanizing environment, and what ultimately enabled him to survive.
Second, I will show the established relationship between Elie and his father, and the impact...show

Although unaware to him at the time, this is the last Elie will ever see of his mother and sister. For
this reason, many Jews are grieving and begin to recite the Kaddish, a Jewish prayer for the dead.
Here Elie questions, " Why should I bless his name? The Eternal, Lord of the Universe, the
All–Powerful and Terrible, was silent. What had I to thank Him for?" Shortly after, as he marches
toward the barracks, Elie witnesses a load of children being dumped into a pit of flames which he
labels the "Angel of Death". At this point I see the diminishing effects the first night of camp life is
already having on Elie as he vows, "Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith
forever… Never shall I forget these moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned
my dreams to dust….Never." Each day at the German concentration camp further and further
deteriorates Elie's belief in God. The final moment, where he renounces all belief in the existence
of God comes at the funeral of three Jewish males who were hung the day before, one of which
was merely a child so light in weight that he hung struggling for nearly an hour before he died. Elie
states, "This day I ceased to plead…. My eyes were open and I was alone–terribly alone in a
world without God and

Night, By Elie Wiesel
The Holocaust is arguably one of the most horrific events in human history. As the last Jewish
survivors are passing away from old age, the importance of Holocaust related documentation is going
to be imperative in teaching the next generations about the monstrosities that went on during this
time. In the 1960 novel, Night, Elie Wiesel utilizes several literary devices, including the symbology
of nighttime, motif of religious practices, and theme of father–son relationships, in order to
emphasize the atrocities of the Holocaust specifically for Jews. Wiesel's first hand experience in
concentration camps allows for a vivid retelling of what many people had to endure.
The symbolic portrayal of the nighttime helps to add a deeper meaning to the text. The title of the
novel, Night, brings the symbol to the forefront of the reader's mind. Nightfall is a time full of fear
and lack of clarity due to the lack of light. This immediately presents an environment without safety
or predictability. Similarly, the first mention of nighttime in the story is when Elie's father receives
the news that all of the Jews in his area are going to be moved into another confined section of the
town. The introduction of the night signifies the end of the sun's appearance and a plunging into
darkness. There is no longer any light which Wiesel uses to mark the descent into the unknown as
they enter the confined areas and later the work/concentration camps. Additionally, when Elie and his
father are

The Holocaust was a horrible time period where Nazi's attempted a genocide of Jewish people,
gypsies and others they deemed had a disability. The victims would be sent to concentration camps,
such as Auschwitz. The point of views the authors used can advance their purpose. If authors use
objective point of view, they give only facts about the topic and does not give any opinions or bias.
Unlike objective, subjective point of views helps form your opinion by giving the author's
experience and bias. The article "Auschwitz," the film One Day at Auschwitz, and the memoir Night
by Elie Wiesel feature information and experiences during the time the Holocaust took place.
The article, "Auschwitz," uses third person objective point of view. It gives solely facts and is not
biased throughout the article. A perfect example of the author's objective point of view can be
found on page two. The author writes "Inmates were always hungry. Food consisted of watery soup
made with rotten vegetables and meat, a few ounces of bread, a bit of margarine,...show more

Night is a memoir written by Elie Wiesel. The memoir shows what he had to experience as a
victim during the time of Holocaust. Wiesel's experiences cause the memoir to be told from a
subjective first person point of view, meaning it is biased and also gives information about it at
the same time. On page 69 Wiesel writes, "and then, there was no longer any reason for me to
fast. I no longer accepted God's silence. As I swallowed my ration of soup, I turned that act into a
symbol of rebellion, of protest against Him." (Wiesel 69). Wiesel decided not to fast as he didn't
believe God was there helping them anymore. This proves that Wiesel uses subjective first person
point of view by his opinion being shown. His bias shows how bad he was treated. Above that, it
shows his feelings about the Holocaust and it helps the reader understand what he had to go

Summary Of ' Night ' By Elie Wiesel
Keandre Santiago Mr. Roe English 4 CP Book Report Part 1 Title: Night Author: Elie Wiesel
Number of pages:120 Where published: Buenos Aires Copyright date:1972 Setting (time and
place): Early 1940s, during World War Two, Holocaust era. starting in Sighet, Transylvania, and
moving throughout concentration camps in Europe. Type of book: Holocaust autobiography I
would describe the main character Eliezer as polluted. His innocence as a child was stolen. his
beliefs that were fueled by his curiosity were put in question and stripped from him. He went into
the camp with the belief that there could not be a place as bad as people described. As he watched
people starving and suffering all around him his whole mind changed. We see him start to think
differently and respond to situations differently. His religion was one thing he thought he would
never forget but his time in the camp changed him. He began to question the very existence of a
God because of the events that unfolded around him. The first setting that is crucial to the
storyline is Sighet where we meet Eliezer and his father. The reason this place is so important is
because this is the place where you learn how close he and his father are and where you learn how
important religion is to him. Both of which shape the story. If he didn 't love his father why would
he try to help him learn to march instep to help him stop being beat on. Or be so enraged and
disgusted when the pipel beat his father. If we didn 't find out

Night by Elie Wiesel Night is a memoir written by Elie Wiesel, a young Jewish boy, who tells of
his experiences during the Holocaust. Elie is a deeply religious boy whose favorite activities are
studying the Talmud and spending time at the Temple with his spiritual mentor, Moshe the
Beadle. At an early age, Elie has a naive, yet strong faith in God. But this faith is tested when the
Nazi's moves him from his small town. Night begins in 1941, when Elie, is twelve years old.
Having grown up in a little town called Sighet in Transylvania, Elie is a studious, deeply religious
boy with a loving family consisting of his parents and three sisters. One day, Moshe the Beadle, a
Jew from Sighet, deported in 1942, with whom Elie had once...show more content...
The death of the pipel is related to the death of his faith in God. On the Jewish New Year, Elie
feels a strong rebellion against God. He becomes the accuser and God the accused. But in his
rebellion against his faith in God, he also feels alone and empty. The Jews debate whether they
should fast for Yom Kippur. As an act of obedience to his father and also as an act of rebellion
against God, Elie swallows his food. In the camps, his physical needs become more important
than his faith. Elie and his father manage to survive through the selection process, where the unfit
are condemned to the crematory. Elie suffers from a foot injury that places him in a hospital. As
Elie recuperates in the hospital after his foot surgery, a faceless neighbor tells him that he has
more faith in Hitler than in anyone else because he's the only one who's kept his promises to the
Jewish people (p. 77). This is a direct attack on those who have clung to their faith in God. The
ultimate insult is that even Hitler is an object worthier of faith than God is. In chapter six, Rabbi
Eliahou, asks if anyone has seen his son. The rabbi is well known and loved by everyone and his
presence is said to bring people genuine peace and comfort. As the rabbi leaves, Elie suddenly
remembers seeing the rabbi's son deliberately run ahead of his father in order to get rid of him, a
dead weight. Elie is horrified at the thought that a son could do so, but is also comforted that Rabbi

Night, By Elie Wiesel
"Hunger–thirst–fear–transport–selection–fire–chimney: these words all have intrinsic meaning, but
in those times, they meant something else" (Wiesel ix). Years after he was liberated from the
concentration camp at Buchenwald, Elie Wiesel wrote Night as a memoir of his life and
experiences during the Holocaust, while a prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz and
Buchenwald. Scholars often refer to the Holocaust as the "anti–world". This anti–world is an
inverted world governed by absurdity. The roles of those living in the anti–world are reversed and
previous values and morals are no longer important. Elie Wiesel portrays four of the characters, in
his memoir, Night, as prophetic figures, each with a new warning for the Jews. There are four main
characteristics that make a person a prophetic figure. First, they always have a story or a tale they
are trying to tell. Secondly, this story usually contains a warning of some kind. The perception of
these individuals as mad by others in their community is the third characteristic; and isolation by
their community as a result of this belief is the fourth characteristic. Throughout the story Eliezer
struggles with his faith and belief in God. Elie Wiesel's memoir, Night, characterizes four prophetic
figures to portray the distorted nature of the anti–world and to illustrate a constant questioning of
God and faith by Eliezer. Introduced as Eliezer's teacher, Moishe the Beadle, the first prophetic
figure, appears

Through his first–person memoir Night, Elie Wiesel reveals that people experience changes in
their attitude as they become products of their environments. After enduring the harsh conditions
of the conditions of the concentration camp Elies recognizes that hope and optimism are
essential to survival. The community gains hope when the camp is sent into a time of chaos and
panic. Elie states, "The raid lasted an hour, if it only could have lasted ten times ten
hours!"(Wiesel 87). The growth shown in Elie in this quote is a gain of hope, and a sign that Elie
still wants to break free and return to his former life, or what will be left of it. In the next quote
Elie regains his faith and humanity in after witnessing a heartwarming act. Eliezer says, "And I was
glad that Rabbi Eliahou should continue to look for his beloved son"(Wiesel 87). The growth shown

In the midst of the worst time at the camp, Elie finds something that gives him a small, but strong
amount of hope. Elie remembers, "I shall always remember that smile. From which world did it
come?"(Wiesel 86). Elie's thought process becomes that if she can smile so beautifully at a time
like this, I should be able to have faith and hope at any point during my journey. When hard times
fall on Elie, he explains his feelings. Elie reflects on an event, "But I had no more tears. And, in the
depths of my being, in the recesses of my weakened conscience, could I have searched it, I might
have found something like–free at last!"(Wiesel 106). Elie now feels as if now his father is gone,
that he has a weight lifted. It shows that his faith is strong and that he can survive easily now while
not having to care for his ailing father. As a result of the oppressive environment of the
concentration camp, Elie discovers that he is so concerned about his own survival that he no longer
cares for the plight of

"I forgive you. Not for you, but for me. Because like chains shackling me to the past, I will no
longer pollute my heart with bitterness, fear, distrust or anger. I forgive you because hate is just
another way of holding on, and you don't belong here anymore."–Beau Taplin. Elie Wiesel, author of
Night and a survivor of the Holocaust, he tells all in his memoir, Night. In his memoir, he expresses
his true feelings while living through the Holocaust. Wiesel gave the ones who persecuted and
assassinated his family and millions of others, but he wrote his memoir to specifically let future
generations remember what happen to 11 million people. In addition, Wiesel wrote Night to speak

He was then sundered from his mother and sisters and was only with his father. Unfortunately, his
parents and younger sister perished in the camps. Elie Wiesel composed Night to reveal the effect
the Holocaust had on his life and how his fate was against him.
When Elie arrived at the first concentration camp, he was a child, but when left he was no longer
human. Elie's character changed through his encounter of the Holocaust. Elie idolized his
religion, Judaism, one relevant identification for him. Elie spent hours praying and learning about
Judaism, but it was the reason he and his family were tormented for. Elie was so intrigued by
Judaism, that he wanted someone a "master" to guide in his studies of Kabbalah, an ancient
spiritual wisdom that teaches how to improve the lives (Wiesel 8). Furthermore, he loses hope in
God and in life. Elie only had a few items when he arrived in the camp, one being his family, but
that would soon be taken from him. When Elie and his family arrived at the camp in Auschwitz, he
was kept by his father. He always gazed after his father, caring for him until his death.

Night by Elie Wiesel Essay
The book Night, written by Elie Wiesel, is a horrifying, historic account of Wiesel's time in multiple
German concentration camps. His work gained him a Nobel Peace Prize. His acceptance speech and
further lectures enlightened many other readers. Elie Wiesel's eye–opening Night is very relevant
for real life. This stunning book is applicable because of its education about World War II for the
Jewish, inspiration to the human race in their day–to–day lives, and because genocide still goes on
today in places such as Darfur.
This book is very educating about the history of the concentration camps and Holocaust. "...The
spectators observed these emaciated creatures ready to kill for a crust of bread...the old man was

This can be done because of the influential power of Night. The people who read night are aware of
what has happened and what might continue to happen. The more people who read Night, the more
people who can stop further events such as the Holocaust. Mr. Wiesel says, "Remembering is a
noble and necessary act. The call of memory, the call to memory, reaches us from the very dawn of
history.... Thus, the rejection of memory becomes a divine curse one that would doom us to repeat
past disasters, past wars." (Nobel Lecture, page 2/4)
Furthermore, Night and Elie Wiesel's teachings are relevant to life because of its inspiration
throughout our everyday lives. The stories and teachings are inspirational and uplifting because of
Elie's perseverance, even when the circumstances seemed to be too horrible. One such example is
after Elie's father dies. "I shall not describe my life during that period. It no longer mattered. Since
my father's death, nothing mattered to me anymore." (Page 113) This shows that Elie is very
depressed because of the death of his father. And yet, he still keeps living. "Suddenly, we saw the
door of Block 37 open slightly. A man appeared, crawling snakelike in the direction of the cauldrons
(of soup)...he reached the first cauldron...poor hero committing suicide for a ration or two or more of
soup...in our minds, he was already dead." (Page 59, Night) The

Night, By Elie Wiesel Essay
Night is a first–hand account of life for Elie Wiesel as a young Jewish teenage boy living in
Hungary and eventually sent to Auschwitz with his family. The moment his family exits the cattle
car the horror of Auschwitz sets in. His mother and sisters become separated from him and his
father immediately, their fate sealed. Elie stays with his father and right away a stranger is giving
them tips on how to survive and stay together. Immediately told to lie about their ages, making Elie
a little older, and his father a little younger. This lie may have been the only chance they had to stay
together, so they follow the stranger's advice and pass by the first peril and housed together.
According to the introduction Elie knew that one day the Holocaust and the time surrounding it
would be judged, so he dedicated his life to informing people through books about these times. He
wanted to make sure his first–hand account was heard and just maybe people could somehow
through the language barrier and all get a glimpse of the brutality inside a concentration camp.
Wiesel's attempt with Night was to open people's eyes to the inhumane murder of six million Jews
and prevent it from ever happening again. Elie knew he could not just stay silent and bear witness
to the holocaust but stand up and be a voice for the millions who suffered a very different fate.
Several themes are found throughout Night, and Elie's faith is the main recurring theme throughout
the book. His faith and God are in

Night, By Elie Wiesel
In Night, by Elie Wiesel, one man tells his story of how he survived his terrible experience during
the Holocaust. Wiesel takes you on a journey through his "night" of the Holocaust, and how he
survived the world's deadliest place, Auschwitz–Birkenau. Elie Wiesel will captivate you on his earth
shattering journey through his endless night. Elie Wiesel's book Night forces you to open your eyes
to the real world by using; irony, diction, and repetition to prove that man does have the capability to
create such a harsh reality.
When Elie Wiesel first arrives at Birkenau other Jews and himself are unloaded from a cattle car
and divided into two groups men and women. They are put through a selection and then taken to the
showers. On the walk to the showers Wiesel describes his first moments at the camp.
Not far from us, flames, huge flames, were rising from a ditch. Something was being burned there.
A truck drew close and unloaded its hold: small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this, with my own
eyes... children thrown into the flames. (Is it any wonder that ever since then, sleep tends to elude
me?) (32)
Wiesel uses imagery to paint you a picture, a terrible one but, it 's one that you will not forget.
Wiesel wants you to understand that these concentration camps were no girl scout camps, but a
camp where it was life or death at any given moment. Wiesel shows you through his diction that the
events that occurred at that camp still eat away at him to this present day.

Essay about Night by Elie Wiesel
Night is a novel written from the perspective of a Jewish teenager, about his experiences as a
prisoner during the Holocaust. Our teenager named Eliezer grew up in the small community of
Sighet, located in Hungarian Transylvania. It's here that Eliezer studies religion, both the Cabbala
and the Torah. At the beginning of the war Eliezer was dedicated and absolute in his belief of God,
but throughout the events of World War II his faith slowly starts to wither away. Eliezer's main
conflict that governs the story would be sustaining his belief in God. This becomes especially hard
throughout the book, as he has to face more and more challenging issues. Moshe the Beadle is the
one character that Eliezer learned about his faith from, Moshes...show more content...
It's in these moments that Eliezer has lost all faith he had in humanity and religion, which he had
previously learned from Moshe. One point in the story that Eliezer questions his faith in God is
when they are forced to watch the hanging of other prisoners, one time the Gestapo even hangs and
kills a small child for being associated with the rebels. It seems that during this point the prisoners
start to react for means of survival only, family members were turning on each other. The prisoners
turn cold hearted and cruel towards each other because now their only concern is survival. Because
of the horrific events in the concentration camp and the ever–present risk of death does Eliezer begin
to lose his faith in humanity and his God. Eliezer has a tough time understanding how the world
and the Gestapo can be capable of this much fury. Because his teachings tell him that God is
good, and since God is everywhere the world therefore must be good. Another strong theme from
the book is the importance of family bonds, especially if that's all you have left in harsh
conditions. Eliezer has a hard time watching the other families interact because they no longer
share a special bond of love but instead share the idea of selfishness. More than once Eliezer
experiences the rupture of the bond a family shares between both the father and son. He describes
his bond with his father as a support system; they both ensure the other has enough to survive

NIGHT
Introduction
The Holocaust was the attempt by the Nazi regime to systematically exterminate the European
Jewish race during World War II. The Holocaust was a reference to the murder of around six
million Jews and other minority groups such as homosexuals, gypsies and the disabled (Wiesel,
2008).
In the 1930's the Jewish population in Romania was around half a million. However, during World
War II most of those Jews sent to the labour barracks or death camps (Wiesel, 2008).
Set the scene of the reader, what is it about?
Night by Elie Wiesel is about his experiences in the Nazi concentration camps of Auschwitz and
Buchenwald in 1944 to 1945, at the height of the Holocaust and toward the end of the Second World
War. It is...show more content...
Elie and his family were packed into cattle cars and taken to Auschwitz. As the train arrived, they
saw smoke rising from chimneys and were assailed by the horrific smell of burning flesh (Wiesel,
2008).
Describe what Elie calls the 'death race'?
The Death Race was the race by the Germans to kill as many Jews as they could. They wanted to
wipe out the entire Jewish race to develop a German 'master race' (Wiesel, 2008).
The Germans were pushing the Jewish community towards death to see who survived. The Passover
ended, "the curtain rose" (Wiesel, 2008) and the Germans "arrested the leaders of the Jewish
community" (Wiesel, 2008). Elie states, "from that moment, everything happened very quickly. The
race toward death had begun" (Wiesel, 2008).
It was at first a slow progression from limiting the rights of the Jewish people, to wearing the Star
of David and then to the attempted extermination. The Germans then began a race to kill the Jews as
quickly as they could (Wiesel, 2008).
Why do you think the prisoner told Elie and his father to lie about their ages?
As they arrived at Auschwitz, a prisoner told Elie and his father to lie about their age in order to
avoid the crematorium (Wiesel, 2008). Those deemed fit to work were sent to the labour barracks,
whereas children and the elderly were sent to the gas chambers

Night, By Elie Wiesel
In this lesson, we will explore three of the major themes of 'Night ' and the imagery that the author,
Elie Wiesel, uses to create them. The themes we will discuss are identity, silence, and night.
!!!About the Book
If you were an observant Jew who believed in a loving God, then you and your family were captured
by a group of ill–intentioned people, causing the death of your family, what would you think about
whether God and humans are good or not? That is the main concern of Eliezer, the main character
in ' 'Night. ' ' ' 'Night ' ' was written by Romanian Jew, Elie Wiesel, and is a
__semi–autobiographical__ work, meaning the author intertwines his/her life and experiences with
a fictional story. ' 'Night ' ' tells the story about a Jewish boy, Eliezer, and his father 's experience in
the Birkenau/Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps during World War II. Wiesel
experienced the same things as Eliezer, but includes additional fictional stories and details about
the characters to create more of a novel than a memoir. The main focus of the book is to reflect on
Eliezer 's questioning of God 's nature, and even his existence, as well as the nature of humanity
during his experience in the Holocaust. Wiesel uses the following themes to create this engaging
story:
*identity
*silence
*night
!!!Loss of Identity
At the beginning of the book, we meet Eliezer who is an observant Jewish boy. This involves not
only having faith in God (whom Eliezer believes is

Essay For Night By Elie Wiesel

  • 1. Night By Elie Wiesel Night One of my favorite books I have ever read was Night by Elie Wiesel. In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, Wiesel tells a horrific tale of a Jewish teenager's experiences in the Holocaust. This story takes place in Germany at several different concentration camps, one being Auschwitz. Throughout this heart wrenching story, Elie Wiesel falls victim to one of the millions of Jews getting taken from their home and out into camps during the Holocaust. The book Night has a title which symbolizes death. The novel has a theme of family; a lot of people take for granted their family and the ties between them. In the book, the character Elie matures from a young teenager into a strong man with many qualities, including being a brave, loyal,...show more content... Throughout the book, Elie grows from a young, scared teenager into a strong leader. He led his father through his final days when he could no longer fend for himself and also helped many others along the way. The author, Elie Wiesel, is an amazing leader and even now, having lived through the unimaginable, still talks about what happened and educates people about the past. He does not possess hatred or revenge. The Holocaust is a very heart wrenching topic to talk about considering his whole family died in it and his father died right in front of his eyes. Yet, he still leads our community in serving others, educating us about everything that happened, opening up and talking about it for all to hear. To me, this truly exemplifies an outstanding Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 3. Essay on Night by Elie Wiesel Night by Elie Wiesel Night, By Elie Wiesel is a devastatingly true story about one man's witness to the genocide of his own people. Living through the horrifying experiences in the German concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Elie sees his family, friends and fellow Jews starved, degraded, and murdered. In this essay I will address three important topics expressed throughout the course of the book. First, I will discuss the struggle and eventual loss of religious faith by Elie in his battle to maintain humanity in this de–humanizing environment, and what ultimately enabled him to survive. Second, I will show the established relationship between Elie and his father, and the impact...show more content... Although unaware to him at the time, this is the last Elie will ever see of his mother and sister. For this reason, many Jews are grieving and begin to recite the Kaddish, a Jewish prayer for the dead. Here Elie questions, " Why should I bless his name? The Eternal, Lord of the Universe, the All–Powerful and Terrible, was silent. What had I to thank Him for?" Shortly after, as he marches toward the barracks, Elie witnesses a load of children being dumped into a pit of flames which he labels the "Angel of Death". At this point I see the diminishing effects the first night of camp life is already having on Elie as he vows, "Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever… Never shall I forget these moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust….Never." Each day at the German concentration camp further and further deteriorates Elie's belief in God. The final moment, where he renounces all belief in the existence of God comes at the funeral of three Jewish males who were hung the day before, one of which was merely a child so light in weight that he hung struggling for nearly an hour before he died. Elie states, "This day I ceased to plead…. My eyes were open and I was alone–terribly alone in a world without God and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Night, By Elie Wiesel The Holocaust is arguably one of the most horrific events in human history. As the last Jewish survivors are passing away from old age, the importance of Holocaust related documentation is going to be imperative in teaching the next generations about the monstrosities that went on during this time. In the 1960 novel, Night, Elie Wiesel utilizes several literary devices, including the symbology of nighttime, motif of religious practices, and theme of father–son relationships, in order to emphasize the atrocities of the Holocaust specifically for Jews. Wiesel's first hand experience in concentration camps allows for a vivid retelling of what many people had to endure. The symbolic portrayal of the nighttime helps to add a deeper meaning to the text. The title of the novel, Night, brings the symbol to the forefront of the reader's mind. Nightfall is a time full of fear and lack of clarity due to the lack of light. This immediately presents an environment without safety or predictability. Similarly, the first mention of nighttime in the story is when Elie's father receives the news that all of the Jews in his area are going to be moved into another confined section of the town. The introduction of the night signifies the end of the sun's appearance and a plunging into darkness. There is no longer any light which Wiesel uses to mark the descent into the unknown as they enter the confined areas and later the work/concentration camps. Additionally, when Elie and his father are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Night By Elie Wiesel Essay The Holocaust was a horrible time period where Nazi's attempted a genocide of Jewish people, gypsies and others they deemed had a disability. The victims would be sent to concentration camps, such as Auschwitz. The point of views the authors used can advance their purpose. If authors use objective point of view, they give only facts about the topic and does not give any opinions or bias. Unlike objective, subjective point of views helps form your opinion by giving the author's experience and bias. The article "Auschwitz," the film One Day at Auschwitz, and the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel feature information and experiences during the time the Holocaust took place. The article, "Auschwitz," uses third person objective point of view. It gives solely facts and is not biased throughout the article. A perfect example of the author's objective point of view can be found on page two. The author writes "Inmates were always hungry. Food consisted of watery soup made with rotten vegetables and meat, a few ounces of bread, a bit of margarine,...show more content... Night is a memoir written by Elie Wiesel. The memoir shows what he had to experience as a victim during the time of Holocaust. Wiesel's experiences cause the memoir to be told from a subjective first person point of view, meaning it is biased and also gives information about it at the same time. On page 69 Wiesel writes, "and then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God's silence. As I swallowed my ration of soup, I turned that act into a symbol of rebellion, of protest against Him." (Wiesel 69). Wiesel decided not to fast as he didn't believe God was there helping them anymore. This proves that Wiesel uses subjective first person point of view by his opinion being shown. His bias shows how bad he was treated. Above that, it shows his feelings about the Holocaust and it helps the reader understand what he had to go Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Summary Of ' Night ' By Elie Wiesel Keandre Santiago Mr. Roe English 4 CP Book Report Part 1 Title: Night Author: Elie Wiesel Number of pages:120 Where published: Buenos Aires Copyright date:1972 Setting (time and place): Early 1940s, during World War Two, Holocaust era. starting in Sighet, Transylvania, and moving throughout concentration camps in Europe. Type of book: Holocaust autobiography I would describe the main character Eliezer as polluted. His innocence as a child was stolen. his beliefs that were fueled by his curiosity were put in question and stripped from him. He went into the camp with the belief that there could not be a place as bad as people described. As he watched people starving and suffering all around him his whole mind changed. We see him start to think differently and respond to situations differently. His religion was one thing he thought he would never forget but his time in the camp changed him. He began to question the very existence of a God because of the events that unfolded around him. The first setting that is crucial to the storyline is Sighet where we meet Eliezer and his father. The reason this place is so important is because this is the place where you learn how close he and his father are and where you learn how important religion is to him. Both of which shape the story. If he didn 't love his father why would he try to help him learn to march instep to help him stop being beat on. Or be so enraged and disgusted when the pipel beat his father. If we didn 't find out Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Night by Elie Wiesel Essay Night by Elie Wiesel Night is a memoir written by Elie Wiesel, a young Jewish boy, who tells of his experiences during the Holocaust. Elie is a deeply religious boy whose favorite activities are studying the Talmud and spending time at the Temple with his spiritual mentor, Moshe the Beadle. At an early age, Elie has a naive, yet strong faith in God. But this faith is tested when the Nazi's moves him from his small town. Night begins in 1941, when Elie, is twelve years old. Having grown up in a little town called Sighet in Transylvania, Elie is a studious, deeply religious boy with a loving family consisting of his parents and three sisters. One day, Moshe the Beadle, a Jew from Sighet, deported in 1942, with whom Elie had once...show more content... The death of the pipel is related to the death of his faith in God. On the Jewish New Year, Elie feels a strong rebellion against God. He becomes the accuser and God the accused. But in his rebellion against his faith in God, he also feels alone and empty. The Jews debate whether they should fast for Yom Kippur. As an act of obedience to his father and also as an act of rebellion against God, Elie swallows his food. In the camps, his physical needs become more important than his faith. Elie and his father manage to survive through the selection process, where the unfit are condemned to the crematory. Elie suffers from a foot injury that places him in a hospital. As Elie recuperates in the hospital after his foot surgery, a faceless neighbor tells him that he has more faith in Hitler than in anyone else because he's the only one who's kept his promises to the Jewish people (p. 77). This is a direct attack on those who have clung to their faith in God. The ultimate insult is that even Hitler is an object worthier of faith than God is. In chapter six, Rabbi Eliahou, asks if anyone has seen his son. The rabbi is well known and loved by everyone and his presence is said to bring people genuine peace and comfort. As the rabbi leaves, Elie suddenly remembers seeing the rabbi's son deliberately run ahead of his father in order to get rid of him, a dead weight. Elie is horrified at the thought that a son could do so, but is also comforted that Rabbi Eliahou Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Night, By Elie Wiesel "Hunger–thirst–fear–transport–selection–fire–chimney: these words all have intrinsic meaning, but in those times, they meant something else" (Wiesel ix). Years after he was liberated from the concentration camp at Buchenwald, Elie Wiesel wrote Night as a memoir of his life and experiences during the Holocaust, while a prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Scholars often refer to the Holocaust as the "anti–world". This anti–world is an inverted world governed by absurdity. The roles of those living in the anti–world are reversed and previous values and morals are no longer important. Elie Wiesel portrays four of the characters, in his memoir, Night, as prophetic figures, each with a new warning for the Jews. There are four main characteristics that make a person a prophetic figure. First, they always have a story or a tale they are trying to tell. Secondly, this story usually contains a warning of some kind. The perception of these individuals as mad by others in their community is the third characteristic; and isolation by their community as a result of this belief is the fourth characteristic. Throughout the story Eliezer struggles with his faith and belief in God. Elie Wiesel's memoir, Night, characterizes four prophetic figures to portray the distorted nature of the anti–world and to illustrate a constant questioning of God and faith by Eliezer. Introduced as Eliezer's teacher, Moishe the Beadle, the first prophetic figure, appears Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay On Night By Elie Wiesel Through his first–person memoir Night, Elie Wiesel reveals that people experience changes in their attitude as they become products of their environments. After enduring the harsh conditions of the conditions of the concentration camp Elies recognizes that hope and optimism are essential to survival. The community gains hope when the camp is sent into a time of chaos and panic. Elie states, "The raid lasted an hour, if it only could have lasted ten times ten hours!"(Wiesel 87). The growth shown in Elie in this quote is a gain of hope, and a sign that Elie still wants to break free and return to his former life, or what will be left of it. In the next quote Elie regains his faith and humanity in after witnessing a heartwarming act. Eliezer says, "And I was glad that Rabbi Eliahou should continue to look for his beloved son"(Wiesel 87). The growth shown in this...show more content... In the midst of the worst time at the camp, Elie finds something that gives him a small, but strong amount of hope. Elie remembers, "I shall always remember that smile. From which world did it come?"(Wiesel 86). Elie's thought process becomes that if she can smile so beautifully at a time like this, I should be able to have faith and hope at any point during my journey. When hard times fall on Elie, he explains his feelings. Elie reflects on an event, "But I had no more tears. And, in the depths of my being, in the recesses of my weakened conscience, could I have searched it, I might have found something like–free at last!"(Wiesel 106). Elie now feels as if now his father is gone, that he has a weight lifted. It shows that his faith is strong and that he can survive easily now while not having to care for his ailing father. As a result of the oppressive environment of the concentration camp, Elie discovers that he is so concerned about his own survival that he no longer cares for the plight of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Night By Elie Wiesel Research Paper "I forgive you. Not for you, but for me. Because like chains shackling me to the past, I will no longer pollute my heart with bitterness, fear, distrust or anger. I forgive you because hate is just another way of holding on, and you don't belong here anymore."–Beau Taplin. Elie Wiesel, author of Night and a survivor of the Holocaust, he tells all in his memoir, Night. In his memoir, he expresses his true feelings while living through the Holocaust. Wiesel gave the ones who persecuted and assassinated his family and millions of others, but he wrote his memoir to specifically let future generations remember what happen to 11 million people. In addition, Wiesel wrote Night to speak for the remembrance of the ones who died. Wiesel was a child when his family and friends were taken...show more content... He was then sundered from his mother and sisters and was only with his father. Unfortunately, his parents and younger sister perished in the camps. Elie Wiesel composed Night to reveal the effect the Holocaust had on his life and how his fate was against him. When Elie arrived at the first concentration camp, he was a child, but when left he was no longer human. Elie's character changed through his encounter of the Holocaust. Elie idolized his religion, Judaism, one relevant identification for him. Elie spent hours praying and learning about Judaism, but it was the reason he and his family were tormented for. Elie was so intrigued by Judaism, that he wanted someone a "master" to guide in his studies of Kabbalah, an ancient spiritual wisdom that teaches how to improve the lives (Wiesel 8). Furthermore, he loses hope in God and in life. Elie only had a few items when he arrived in the camp, one being his family, but that would soon be taken from him. When Elie and his family arrived at the camp in Auschwitz, he was kept by his father. He always gazed after his father, caring for him until his death. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Night by Elie Wiesel Essay The book Night, written by Elie Wiesel, is a horrifying, historic account of Wiesel's time in multiple German concentration camps. His work gained him a Nobel Peace Prize. His acceptance speech and further lectures enlightened many other readers. Elie Wiesel's eye–opening Night is very relevant for real life. This stunning book is applicable because of its education about World War II for the Jewish, inspiration to the human race in their day–to–day lives, and because genocide still goes on today in places such as Darfur. This book is very educating about the history of the concentration camps and Holocaust. "...The spectators observed these emaciated creatures ready to kill for a crust of bread...the old man was crying, 'Meir, my...show more content... This can be done because of the influential power of Night. The people who read night are aware of what has happened and what might continue to happen. The more people who read Night, the more people who can stop further events such as the Holocaust. Mr. Wiesel says, "Remembering is a noble and necessary act. The call of memory, the call to memory, reaches us from the very dawn of history.... Thus, the rejection of memory becomes a divine curse one that would doom us to repeat past disasters, past wars." (Nobel Lecture, page 2/4) Furthermore, Night and Elie Wiesel's teachings are relevant to life because of its inspiration throughout our everyday lives. The stories and teachings are inspirational and uplifting because of Elie's perseverance, even when the circumstances seemed to be too horrible. One such example is after Elie's father dies. "I shall not describe my life during that period. It no longer mattered. Since my father's death, nothing mattered to me anymore." (Page 113) This shows that Elie is very depressed because of the death of his father. And yet, he still keeps living. "Suddenly, we saw the door of Block 37 open slightly. • 13. Night, By Elie Wiesel Essay Night is a first–hand account of life for Elie Wiesel as a young Jewish teenage boy living in Hungary and eventually sent to Auschwitz with his family. The moment his family exits the cattle car the horror of Auschwitz sets in. His mother and sisters become separated from him and his father immediately, their fate sealed. Elie stays with his father and right away a stranger is giving them tips on how to survive and stay together. Immediately told to lie about their ages, making Elie a little older, and his father a little younger. This lie may have been the only chance they had to stay together, so they follow the stranger's advice and pass by the first peril and housed together. According to the introduction Elie knew that one day the Holocaust and the time surrounding it would be judged, so he dedicated his life to informing people through books about these times. He wanted to make sure his first–hand account was heard and just maybe people could somehow through the language barrier and all get a glimpse of the brutality inside a concentration camp. Wiesel's attempt with Night was to open people's eyes to the inhumane murder of six million Jews and prevent it from ever happening again. Elie knew he could not just stay silent and bear witness to the holocaust but stand up and be a voice for the millions who suffered a very different fate. Several themes are found throughout Night, and Elie's faith is the main recurring theme throughout the book. His faith and God are in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Night, By Elie Wiesel In Night, by Elie Wiesel, one man tells his story of how he survived his terrible experience during the Holocaust. Wiesel takes you on a journey through his "night" of the Holocaust, and how he survived the world's deadliest place, Auschwitz–Birkenau. Elie Wiesel will captivate you on his earth shattering journey through his endless night. Elie Wiesel's book Night forces you to open your eyes to the real world by using; irony, diction, and repetition to prove that man does have the capability to create such a harsh reality. When Elie Wiesel first arrives at Birkenau other Jews and himself are unloaded from a cattle car and divided into two groups men and women. They are put through a selection and then taken to the showers. On the walk to the showers Wiesel describes his first moments at the camp. Not far from us, flames, huge flames, were rising from a ditch. Something was being burned there. A truck drew close and unloaded its hold: small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this, with my own eyes... children thrown into the flames. (Is it any wonder that ever since then, sleep tends to elude me?) (32) Wiesel uses imagery to paint you a picture, a terrible one but, it 's one that you will not forget. Wiesel wants you to understand that these concentration camps were no girl scout camps, but a camp where it was life or death at any given moment. Wiesel shows you through his diction that the events that occurred at that camp still eat away at him to this present day. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Essay about Night by Elie Wiesel Night is a novel written from the perspective of a Jewish teenager, about his experiences as a prisoner during the Holocaust. Our teenager named Eliezer grew up in the small community of Sighet, located in Hungarian Transylvania. It's here that Eliezer studies religion, both the Cabbala and the Torah. At the beginning of the war Eliezer was dedicated and absolute in his belief of God, but throughout the events of World War II his faith slowly starts to wither away. Eliezer's main conflict that governs the story would be sustaining his belief in God. This becomes especially hard throughout the book, as he has to face more and more challenging issues. Moshe the Beadle is the one character that Eliezer learned about his faith from, Moshes...show more content... It's in these moments that Eliezer has lost all faith he had in humanity and religion, which he had previously learned from Moshe. One point in the story that Eliezer questions his faith in God is when they are forced to watch the hanging of other prisoners, one time the Gestapo even hangs and kills a small child for being associated with the rebels. It seems that during this point the prisoners start to react for means of survival only, family members were turning on each other. The prisoners turn cold hearted and cruel towards each other because now their only concern is survival. Because of the horrific events in the concentration camp and the ever–present risk of death does Eliezer begin to lose his faith in humanity and his God. Eliezer has a tough time understanding how the world and the Gestapo can be capable of this much fury. Because his teachings tell him that God is good, and since God is everywhere the world therefore must be good. Another strong theme from the book is the importance of family bonds, especially if that's all you have left in harsh conditions. Eliezer has a hard time watching the other families interact because they no longer share a special bond of love but instead share the idea of selfishness. More than once Eliezer experiences the rupture of the bond a family shares between both the father and son. He describes his bond with his father as a support system; they both ensure the other has enough to survive Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. Night by Elie Wiesel Essay NIGHT Introduction The Holocaust was the attempt by the Nazi regime to systematically exterminate the European Jewish race during World War II. The Holocaust was a reference to the murder of around six million Jews and other minority groups such as homosexuals, gypsies and the disabled (Wiesel, 2008). In the 1930's the Jewish population in Romania was around half a million. However, during World War II most of those Jews sent to the labour barracks or death camps (Wiesel, 2008). Set the scene of the reader, what is it about? As the train arrived, they saw smoke rising from chimneys and were assailed by the horrific smell of burning flesh (Wiesel, 2008). Describe what Elie calls the 'death race'? The Death Race was the race by the Germans to kill as many Jews as they could. They wanted to wipe out the entire Jewish race to develop a German 'master race' (Wiesel, 2008). The Germans were pushing the Jewish community towards death to see who survived. The Passover ended, "the curtain rose" (Wiesel, 2008) and the Germans "arrested the leaders of the Jewish community" (Wiesel, 2008). Elie states, "from that moment, everything happened very quickly. The race toward death had begun" (Wiesel, 2008). It was at first a slow progression from limiting the rights of the Jewish people, to wearing the Star of David and then to the attempted extermination. The Germans then began a race to kill the Jews as quickly as they could (Wiesel, 2008). Why do you think the prisoner told Elie and his father to lie about their ages? As they arrived at Auschwitz, a prisoner told Elie and his father to lie about their age in order to avoid the crematorium (Wiesel, 2008). Those deemed fit to work were sent to the labour barracks, whereas children and the elderly were sent to the gas chambers

  • 21. Night, By Elie Wiesel In this lesson, we will explore three of the major themes of 'Night ' and the imagery that the author, Elie Wiesel, uses to create them. The themes we will discuss are identity, silence, and night. !!!About the Book If you were an observant Jew who believed in a loving God, then you and your family were captured by a group of ill–intentioned people, causing the death of your family, what would you think about whether God and humans are good or not? That is the main concern of Eliezer, the main character in ' 'Night. ' ' ' 'Night ' ' was written by Romanian Jew, Elie Wiesel, and is a __semi–autobiographical__ work, meaning the author intertwines his/her life and experiences with a fictional story. ' 'Night ' ' tells the story about a Jewish boy, Eliezer, and his father 's experience in the Birkenau/Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps during World War II. Wiesel experienced the same things as Eliezer, but includes additional fictional stories and details about the characters to create more of a novel than a memoir. The main focus of the book is to reflect on Eliezer 's questioning of God 's nature, and even his existence, as well as the nature of humanity during his experience in the Holocaust. Wiesel uses the following themes to create this engaging story: *identity *silence *night !!!Loss of Identity At the beginning of the book, we meet Eliezer who is an observant Jewish boy. This involves not only having faith in God (whom Eliezer believes is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
