2. Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a US federal holiday wherein the men and women who
died while serving in the United States Armed Forces are remembered.
The holiday, which is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May,
was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the
American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate
soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day
had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the
military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation
season, while Labor Day marks its end.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those
who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American
flag on each grave in national cemeteries. (Wikipedia)
3. Memorial Day is Personal to Many
What is a memorial?
MEMO'RIAL, n. That which preserves the memory of something;
any thing that serves to keep in memory. A monument is a memorial
of a deceased person, or of an event. The Lord's supper is a memorial
of the death and sufferings of Christ. (Webster’s 1828)
4. Crying Out to the Lord for
1Sa 7:6-9 ESV So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured
it out before the LORD and fasted on that day and said there, "We have
sinned against the LORD." And Samuel judged the people of Israel at
Mizpah. (7) Now when the Philistines heard that the people of Israel
had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against
Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the
Philistines. (8) And the people of Israel said to Samuel, "Do not cease
to cry out to the LORD our God for us, that he may save us from the
hand of the Philistines." (9) So Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered
it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. And Samuel cried out to the
LORD for Israel, and the LORD answered him.
Why did they Cry Out to the
Lord?
5. Crying Out to the Lord for
HelpJas 5:15-18 ESV And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick,
and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be
forgiven. (16) Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for
one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person
has great power as it is working. (17) Elijah was a man with a nature
like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three
years and six months it did not rain on the earth. (18) Then he prayed
again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
1Sa 7:9 ESV So Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered it as a whole
burnt offering to the LORD. And Samuel cried out to the LORD for
Israel, and the LORD answered him.
6. Cries, Sacrifice, & Prayers
Rom 8:14-15 ESV For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of
God. (15) For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into
fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we
cry, "Abba! Father!"
Read Ephesians 3:11-21
Heb 13:15 ESV Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice
of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
7. Crashing Thunder of God Tramples the Enemy
1Sa 7:10-11 ESV As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the
Philistines drew near to attack Israel. But the LORD thundered with a
mighty sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into
confusion, and they were routed before Israel. (11) And the men of
Israel went out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines and struck them,
as far as below Beth-car.
1Co 2:7-9 ESV But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God,
which God decreed before the ages for our glory. (8) None of the rulers
of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified
the Lord of glory. (9) But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor
ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for
those who love him"--
8. Raised up a Rock
1Sa 7:12-13 ESV Then Samuel took a stone and set it
up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name
Ebenezer; for he said, "Till now the LORD has helped
us." (13) So the Philistines were subdued and did not
again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the
LORD was against the Philistines all the days of
Samuel.
Ebenezer simply means “stone of help”– So Samuel says “Till
now the LORD has helped us.
Psa 61:1-3 ESV Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; (2) from the
end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I, (3) for you have been my refuge, a strong tower
against the enemy.
9. Raised up a Rock
Mat 21:42 ESV Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the
Scriptures: "'The stone that the builders rejected has become the
cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
Dan 2:44-45 ESV And in the days of those kings the God of
heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor
shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in
pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall
stand forever, (45) just as you saw that a stone was cut from a
mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron,
the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has
made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is
certain, and its interpretation sure."
10. Raised up a Rock
1Pe 2:4-7 ESV As you come to him, a living
stone rejected by men but in the sight of God
chosen and precious, (5) you yourselves like
living stones are being built up as a spiritual
house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual
sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
(6) For it stands in Scripture: "Behold, I am
laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and
precious, and whoever believes in him will not be
put to shame." (7) So the honor is for you who
believe, but for those who do not believe, "The
stone that the builders rejected has become the
cornerstone,"
11. Raised up a Rock
1Pe 2:8-9 ESV and "A stone of stumbling, and a
rock of offense." They stumble because they
disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
(9) But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, a people for his own possession,
that you may proclaim the excellencies of him
who called you out of darkness into his
marvelous light.
