2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
Masthead: The masthead is
placed on the top middle of the
magazine, covering the width of
the magazine.
Cover Lines: The cover lines are
written in different fonts and
sizes, and also different colours.
Layout: The main colours
are grey, black and white.
And the main font is Times
New Roman.
Main Image: The main image is
covering the whole front cover.
It’s a staged studio shot with
beige background.
3. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
Age: The magazine only
contains images of young
women. They are dressed in
tops and jeans, which is
typically teenage clothes.
Gender: All the images are
of females. The female
models look natural and
have natural make up and
hair.
Class: The images are natural and the
models are represented in a middle
class way, because of the fashionable
clothes and their nice hair and make
up.
Social Groups: The magazine only contains
pop music. Not indie, hippie or rock or any
other types. So it would be natural that
people who like pop music or artists within
that genre buys the magazine.
4. What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
I would like my magazine to be published
by Bauer Media Group because they
publish other music magazines as well as
other women magazines and other types of
magazines. I believe it is a good thing that
they publish other music magazines
because it is not the same music type
magazine as mine, so it will not be that
much of a competition.
5. Who would be the audience for your media
product?
The colours are not made for any particular sex,
by the colours it could both be a magazine
aimed for male and females.
The magazine also contains gossip as
well as music news and other contents.
Gossip is usually related to women,
which is usually why a female gender
would by this magazine.
The articles and contents are mostly
about female artists, which is why
women would be the target
audience of this magazine.
The main font is Times New
Roman, but it also contains some
girls fonts such as Edwardian
Script and similar fonts to that,
which makes it more girly.
6. How did you attract/address your audience?
Front Cover
Fonts and colours: I’m really happy with my choice of fonts
because I think it fits the pop genre perfectly, especially the
masthead. I’ve used colours that matches because it looks
more tidy and the audience won’t struggle reading the
contents on the front cover, and the colours are not too
strong which often makes it look messy. I’ve chosen some
similar fonts such as Times New Roman, Edwardian Script
and similar fonts to these.
Cover lines: The cover lines are in different sizes, fonts and
colours, it gives the design of the magazine a good variety,
and more interesting.
Main Image: The main image is a staged studio shot of
Pauline. She looks quite natural and casual, which is the
attitude of the magazine as well, so the image fits quite
well. Considering the age of the target audience is down to
15 years, I did not want the magazine to be too much in
focus of looks, but more on music and other gossip.
Language: I’ve used quite casual language, not in any
particular way. But because of the different fonts, colours
and sizes you read it in a particular way. For example ,
“Win Cheryl Cole’s new album,” you read win with more
pressure than the other words because the colour of the
that word is stronger and bigger. I’ve used this element
to reveal the most important words in the sentences.
7. What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?
Bars and boxes: I’ve learned how to
create bars and boxes on
Photoshop, and how to put text in it.
Fonts: I’ve learned how to
download fonts from Dafont.com
and how to transform it to
Photoshop.
Images: I’ve learned how to
transform images to Photoshop,
and how to crop and resize it
without destroying the quality of
picture.
Colours: I’ve learned how to
use different colours and
change them however I
want.
8. I’ve learned how to use BlogSpot, and how
to arrange my work into boxes and labels. I
had never used BlogSpot before.
9. I’ve learned how to use SLR Canon
cameras, how to change the lights and
use the photography studio.
10. Due to my research of other
magazines, I got a lot of
inspirations of how I wanted my
design to be and how I wanted my
images to look. The research gave
me inspiration of how I wanted
the Style, layout, attitude and
genre to be.
11. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel
you have learnt in the progression from it to the full
product?
Looking back at my first
making of a magazine, I
really see a big change. I’ve
learned a lot more about
how to attract the
audience to read a
magazine, making of a
magazine and doing
research. PhotoShop, use
of SLR Camera, use of
Fonts etc. Especially
PhotoShop Fonts,
Colours, Images, Bars,
Boxes, Contents.
