For instance marriage in the 19th century was based around tradition and moral values. Many families were agricultural and companionship was more important than education, this is why many girl got married at a young age. Once the girls were married off, the woman’s rule was to take care of the family and the household and keeping everything in order. Men were seen as superior and as breadwinners. The men worked, had more freedom and a better social life. They were also respected more, compared to the women.

4. Comparing Love and Marriage from the 19th century and Today Marriage Today In todays marriage we are aloud to marry freely without our parents consent over the age 16 – 18. We are aloud to intervene with them without anyone's agreement although it is good for your friends to know about his background. It is not all about social status now days but about the passion you feel for the other man. Although in some religions, parents still arrange marriages for them and follow by the 19th century rule but there are more support groups in todays society Marriage in the 19th century Marriage in the 19th century was hard and in some marriages there was no love. In the book “Tess of the D’Urbervilles” Tess’ mother chose for her to marry there rich ‘relative’ for the social status. They would arrange for them to meet under control and the women had no say. Also if they have had sex before marriage they are considered to be a hussy and it will make it a difficult situation for them to be married off.
