Real Time Education to Support the Frontline

  1. 1. Real-Time Education Tools to Support the Frontline Carole A. Klove, RN, JD Chief Nursing Officer Elemeno Health
  2. 2. The Frontline Burden
  3. 3. Why the Need for Real-Time Tools to Support the Frontline “Troops” • COVID-19 is changing care standards daily • PPE Supplies, Testing availability and surgical priorities fluctuate • Ventilator capability and alternatives flex • Staff are being floated to serve the hospitals greatest need • Cross-training is required to support the frontline teams (MD, RN, PT, EVS) • Information shared is not digestible and coming in all different directions • Communication is not centralized • CDC and Local guidance is being rapidly updated • Frontline teams need one source of truth “It’s impossible to remember every procedure or protocol” - ICU Nurse
  4. 4. COVID-19 Highlights A Learning Gap • Traditional Analog Modalities (Policies in Binders, SharePoint sites, Classroom training, email blasts) are not working • Staff are overwhelmed, unprepared and stressed • Teams cannot separate the signal from noise • Staff are already working overtime and cannot attend one more PPE class
  5. 5. Our World and Workflow – Continuously Pivoting • Inpatient: • Creation of algorithms for surgical need – emergent, urgent, elective • Surgeons pivoting also to be intensivists to support clinical needs • Workflows changing – caring for a surgical patient with COVID • Just-in-time learning for all to adapt and pivot to changing standards and patient needs • Outpatient: • Screening of ambulatory patients for COVID • New Workflows require real-time training for for staff • Learning to use Telemedicine when possible • Educating and supporting staff, patients and family
  6. 6. COVID-19 Spotlighted the Need for Disruption and Innovation Tools • Digital Tools Elevate Teams and Support Changing Needs by Improving Communication and Training • Implement quickly and can be updated in real-time to create one source of truth • Deliver the right information to the right person at the right time specific to keep patients safe and staff secure • Allow staff to share feedback which drives engagement • Leverage and share practice • No PHI which allows for deployment in less than 1 day without IT support required.
  7. 7. Better Training. Better Communication. Better Outcomes. Point of Care Training: • Quickly onboard and cross- train staff. • Workforce agile and ready to adapt to the surge. • Patients safer - Staff protected. Sharing Practices: • Fosters Community and reduces training curve • Democratize practices across healthcare • Improve patient outcomes Enhance Team Communication: • Improved with a simple updatable authoritative source. • Accessible on-demand 24/7 • Staff informed as practices change and feel confident and secure reducing unnecessary stress.
