- 2. Queensland Flood Deployment Citations In January 2011, 11 Volunteer First Aid Service members were deployed to Queensland to assist in the recovery phase following the devastating flood that had occurred.

- A series of floods hit Australia, beginning in December 2010, primarily in the state of Queensland including its capital city, Brisbane. The floods, which reached their peak in January, forced the evacuation of thousands of people from towns and cities. At least seventy towns and over 200,000 people were affected. Three-quarters of the state of Queensland was declared a disaster zone and 35 people died.
- Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser said it was not possible to put a figure on the damage; "other than to say the damage bill is going to start with a b and not an m”. The floods are expected to cost the Australian economy at least A$10 billion.
- St John Ambulance (WA) received a formal request late on Friday afternoon, the 21st January to provide a team to provide support to the recovery arrangements. Queensland St John volunteers and volunteers from St John interstate were exhausted and need assistance to continue supporting the clean up arrangements.
- A team of 11 volunteers was selected and was be lead by John Ree of Mandurah Division and supported by Ian Smith from Rockingham Division as the Deputy Team Leader. Other members of the team were Graeme Shapiro and Pam Thompson (Melville), Bryn Woodward, Tenille Woodward and James Caudle (Perth No 1), Vanisha Pindoria (Morley), Ray Hill and Melissa Rorke Wanneroo) and Dash Crossley (Victoria Park).
- The team left Perth on Monday morning at 08.30 for Brisbane on a Virgin Australia flight for a seven day deployment. We thank Virgin Australia for their assistance in supporting the deployment of many St John Ambulance and other emergency service volunteers during the major emergency. During their time away, they worked out in the community doing welfare checks, provided first aid, worked at evacuations centres, helped restock vehicles and equipment and supported the Incident Management team at Headquarters.
- We had over 60 volunteers, express there availability. This opportunity to support the Queensland Flood crisis was a great test for VFAS's ability to respond these types of requests. Some of the key learning’s from this kind of deployment is around how we communicate with our volunteers, and how we prepare for these kinds of emergencies.
- The floods showed Australia’s true team spirit with more than 55,000 volunteers registered to help clean up the streets of Brisbane, and thousands more unregistered volunteers wandering the muddy streets with gumboots and mops. Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the volunteering effort showed tremendous 'Aussie spirit' and that "Right across Queensland today people have got up, marched out of their homes and gone to find people to help," she said. All across the state people have opened their houses, their hearts and their wallets to help.
- From around Australia, and coordinated by the Queensland St John Ambulance team, volunteers provided support to the Queensland people from the 27th December to the 13th February. During this time there were An average of 270 members deployed each day during the peak flood response 8,000 hours undertaken over the 48 days 2,700 clinical treatments undertaken 2,500 non clinical treatments undertaken 6 evacuation centres staffed 24 hours a day Up to 24 on-road crews active each day responding to various areas to provide first aid support
- In late March, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh congratulated the people who assisted and responded to this disaster. She acknowledged the, on behalf of all Queenslanders, the assistance provided, the acts of bravery, selflessness and sense of compassion that were provided to the people of Queensland. Tonight we will present the WA team members, on behalf of the Queensland Government, a commemorative citation as reminder of their contribution.
