 Peselman’s main idea---social order based
on flimsy values will fall apart when directly
challenged.
 As a writer, you want to show that your
analysis works---your tool to analyze your
topic is valid, in this case, Peselman used
the analytical lens of Collin’s work to
examine dorm life.
 All of his insights were related to his main
idea.
Reading Strategies
 Look for a sentence that makes a general
statement about the way something works.
 Look for statements that take this form:
 X can be defined as the following A,B, and
C.
 Or
 X consists of A, B and C.
Find an online source for your research
project, one that might provide an
analytical tool to examine your topic.
 Follow the reading strategy on the previous

 Of note, Peselman borrowed Collins’
conclusion and imported only the conclusion:
 Any argument works because people avoid
questioning is most of the time.
 Peselman does not reconstruct the argument.
 Applies the argument as an analytical tool:

Analyzing a Text Using Peselman's Framework

  • 2. Read Model Analysis p102  The Coming Apart of a Dorm Society  What is the function of paragraph 1?  Why does he introduce Collins paragraph2  What does Peselman accomplish in paragraphs 3-4?  How does his use of Collins in paragraph 5 follow paragraphs 3-4?  For the rest of the essay, where, how and why does he draw on the work of Peselman?
  • 3. Note: Analysis can be put to personal use  Peselman’s main idea---social order based on flimsy values will fall apart when directly challenged.  As a writer, you want to show that your analysis works---your tool to analyze your topic is valid, in this case, Peselman used the analytical lens of Collin’s work to examine dorm life.  All of his insights were related to his main idea.
  • 4. Reading Strategies  Look for a sentence that makes a general statement about the way something works.  Look for statements that take this form:  X can be defined as the following A,B, and C.  Or  X consists of A, B and C.

Find an online source for your research project, one that might provide an analytical tool to examine your topic.  Follow the reading strategy on the previous slide:  Look for the statement:  X consists of A B and C  Or  X can be defined as A B and C  You might want to bring this statement to your paper as an analytical tool or lens to view your topic

Note on p108-109  We are presented with Collins’ work.  Of note, Peselman borrowed Collins’ conclusion and imported only the conclusion:  Any argument works because people avoid questioning is most of the time.  Peselman does not reconstruct the argument.  Applies the argument as an analytical tool: What is the social arrangement in the dorm?  How was it challenged?
  • 7. What you need to do: Formulate a thesis  Establish your argument with a principle or definition.  Claim #1 Principle X is valuable.  Part 2 of the argument: present your principle to the argument at hand:  Claim #2 By applying principle “X” , we can see that the topic as conclusion based on analysis.
  • 8. Develop an Organizational Plan  Turn key elements of your principle or definition into questions.
  • 9. Guidelines for Writing an Analysis  Create a context for your analysis  Introduce and summarize the key definition or principle  Analyze your topic  Conclude by stating clearly what is significant about your topic
  • 10. Create a context  Introduce and summarize for readers the object, event or behavior to be analyzed— make a case for why an analysis is needed.
  • 11. Introduce and summarize the key definition or principle  Argue the validity of the principle or definition
  • 12. Analyze your topic  Here you can pose specific questions based on your analytical principle  Or you can break your principle into parts to apply it to the topic systematically
  • 13. Conclude by stating the significance
