7. Client Profile
Jason and Sarah Stevens are in the process of an entire home remodel for which they have hired a designer for Phase 1
of the project. The beginning phase of this job will include the three bedrooms as well as the attached baths. Jason and
Sarah have been married for approximately one year. They are still in the process of combining their two styles of
furnishings together in a home that Jason owned previous to their wedding. Jason’s style is very contemporary which is
reflected in the style of their home while Sarah’s style tends to lean more towards traditional. Sarah loves antiques and
would love to see some incorporated in the design. The challenge with this project will be to design a space they both
can agree on. They do, however, agree that they both lean toward soft, muted colors and shy away from bright, bold
colors. They want the redesigned space to have a relaxing feeling that will soon be reflected throughout the rest of the
home.
Jason and Sarah are expecting their first child in the fall of 2010. This child will be a girl which they intend on naming
Brianna. They would like to turn the bedroom directly opposite from the master bedroom into a nursery. The space
should include all the necessary baby furniture (crib, changing table, rocking chair) while still maintaining a large amount
of storage for all the baby items they will need. The attached bath should reflect the feeling and color scheme of the
nursery while also providing much needed storage for the family.
With the arrival of this child, an office will need to be set up in the second bedroom to accommodate Sarah’s desire to
continue working with her wedding planning business while still being able to be at home with the new baby. This office
should include an outside entrance so that Sarah can have clients come to the office without having to come through
the home’s main entry. Two chairs will also be needed to accommodate any clients that may visit. The office should also
contain all of the necessary storage that a home-based business will require, including a desk, office chair, and filing
drawers. Sarah has previously purchased an antique chest that she would like to use as the vanity in the bath attached
to the office. This piece is a jumping off point for the color scheme and furnishings style in this room.
Lastly, Jason and Sarah would like a complete remodel of their current master bedroom and master bath. The overall
feeling in these two rooms should be one of calm and relaxation. Since the back of the home faces the waterway,
privacy is not a real issue. The couple has insisted that the view out of the back windows remain unobstructed so they
can enjoy the entire view of the backyard. After Sarah moved into the home, the couple realized that clothing storage in
the bedroom has become an issue. They have requested that more storage be incorporated into the design.
13. Client Profile
Dr. Scott Smith and Dr. Janice Brown are pediatricians entering into a partnership who require a new office facility.
They will have a neighborhood centered office that will deal with the complete range of pediatric care. The office is
located in the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte, NC.
The atmosphere of the new office should be professional and businesslike. However, the primary concern in terms of
ambiance is to create a relaxed atmosphere throughout to minimize the typical anxiety that most parents and children
feel when entering a doctor’s office. The practice employs a receptionist/secretary, a medical assistant, and a part-
time bookkeeper for billing and other business functions.
The client has several adjacency requirements. The receptionist controls the movement of patients; therefore the
location must be centrally and uniquely situated to perform that function. The reception and business office
workstations should have easy eye contact while both of these workstations should have easy access to the work
room. The storage room should be easily accessed by both the work room and the nurses’ station. When entering
from the waiting room, the patients should see a transaction counter for the nurses’ station. Visual cues should allow
visitors to know which way to go when entering and exiting the back area. The nurses’ station should also be
conveniently located to service each of the three exam rooms. The restroom should be nearby both the exam room
and the waiting area for easy access.
The client has allowed the designer to make all decisions about the design with very few specific requests. They
would like a television in the children’s play area to keep them occupied during the wait to be seen. Also, the client
would like to incorporate a break area for the employees if the space planning allows for it. The partners have also
requested an “escape” exit where they can leave without passing through the reception/waiting area. A storage closet
for maintenance and extra supplies would be nice as well.
Privacy is an issue for the partners. The exam rooms and the consulting offices must have acoustic privacy because
these are the areas where patient’s confidential information will be discussed. Also, the reception and business
computers should be shielded from public view. The office should be HIPAA compliant with regards to their storage
management process, which includes such items as chart holders.
