Melbourne
1. Melbourne | Australia | Holidays
The city of Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and the second largest citys in Australia.
Melbourne is also the most culturally diverse city in the country and has been the destination of
choice for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have made Australia their new home.
Melbourne is truly the cultural capital of the country with representatives from dozens of
different cultures contributing to the huge mix of people now living here. The restaurant industry
is a sign of the times. You can choose to eat Chinese, Arabian, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek,
Turkish, French, Lebanese, Indonesian, Japanese, English, German or even Australian food in a
multitude of different restaurants in Melbourne.
2. Melbourne lies at the head of Port Phillip Bay which provides both excellent port facilities that
are of world standard as well as providing a play ground for its millions of residents. It is a
popular venue for boating and fishing as well has having many great calm water beaches around
its perimeter. Along its eastern shore, the Mornington Peninsular provides a quieter lifestyle
amid beautiful surroundings. On the western side the city of Geelong is the states second largest
city. Melbourne lies almost at the geometric center of Victoria which means that it is never far to
travel for a day or weekend away in one of the popular tourist areas. It is only a couple of hours
drive to Mt Buller for a winter skiing holiday. Phillip Island is close, to the south, if you want to
go and see the wildlife or the motor racing. The Dandenong Ranges are a favourite destination
for Melbourne people with snowfalls in the winter and warm sunshine and plenty of wildlife on
display in the summer. The Great Ocean Road through Apollo Bay to Warnambool is only a
couple of hours from Melbourne and the beautiful Gold Fields and Grampians regions are great
for a weekend away.
Melbourne is the home of the Australian football code and a fanaticism exists here that is quite
extraordinary. It is a sports lovers city and its inhabitants turn out in huge numbers to watch their
favourite teams at play. Melbourne has, for some unknown reason, got an inferiority complex
and the media here is always on about Melbourne Sydney rivalry. This concept of rivalry
between the two does not exist in Sydney.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground, or MCG as it is known is one of the worlds largest stadiums and
can seat over 100000 fans. The atmosphere here can be absolutely electric at the AFL grand final
or for the iconic Boxing Day cricket test. The Australian open tennis tournament is one of the
four majors in the world and it is held in January each year in Melbourne. This event attracts
hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world. The Australian Grand Prix motor race
is also a major drawcard and the course that circumnavigates Albert Park Lake is almost right in
the city center.
3. Melbourne is a fantastic place to visit. The shopping here is second to none with plenty of quality
suburban shopping malls. When the sales are on, places like Chadstone and many others come
alive with local and interstate bargain hunters. There is plenty of great accommodation with a
huge selection of hotels, apartments, and hostels for travellers to choose from and the restaurants
are among the best in the country.
Melbourne is a fantastic place for a holiday so come along, bring your credit card, book some
great Melbourne accommodation and soak up some of the culture.
